Do you have a pre-school or school-aged child with special needs? Do those special needs interfere with your child’s abil-ity to play and interact with his or her family members, cousins, grandparents? Bring THEM along. This is our 7th year and our sessions continue to be designed to include any of the adult caregivers and siblings in the activities. Communication, access to the environment, safety, memory tools, power wheelchairs, sensory needs, electronic daily living aides, adaptive equipment for feeding/cooking and daily cares and phone/computer access ideas and strategies will be reviewed. Resources for MN providers of AT assessment and training will be given at completion of the session. (Presenter: Sue Redepenning)

E. Using Low/High Tech Assistive Technology Tools to Support Language and Literacy - Join Amy Perron, Assistive Technology Resource Specialist and MariBeth Plankers, MS CCC-SLP, ATP for an opportunity to engage in a variety of hands-on experiences that focus on language and literacy. Students (preschool to high school) and parents will be able to participate in learning about assistive technology tools ranging from no-tech to a level of high-tech that will assist with lowering the barriers and raising the level of success for all learners. Additionally, learn about the MN STAR Program and their free device loan program. Join us for this fun day of first hand assistive technology experience. (Presenters: Amy Perron and MariBeth Plankers)

F. Celebrate Differences with Munchkin the Therapy Horse - Bring the whole family to meet Munchkin, while you learn about animal assisted interventions. Munchkin is a special miniature horse with dwarfism who has to do some things differently because of his condition. Learn about the video and iBook that Munchkin stars in that were developed to generate discussion about celebrating differences. Then learn about the benefits of animal assisted interventions and the difference between service animals, emotional support animals, and therapy animals. Munchkin is registered through Pet Partners and is part of the organization’s “Read with Me” program. If your child uses an AAC device, you may want to have the following words/phrases programmed: pet the horse, brush the horse, lead the horse, and feed the horse. (Presenter: Amanda Peters and Munchkin)

G. Yoga, Movement and Boundaries - Mindful movement, personal space, and boundaries are connected in many ways. In this workshop, we will use yoga to practice and think about the different boundaries with the different people in our lives. Our boundaries can change from person to person, situation to situation, or even day to day. We always have the right to say no to any type of touch. We will explore breath, movement, and relaxation together while playing games and building connection within our families and the group. This workshop is for everyone – all ages and abilities! (Presenter: Katie Thune)

H. What is O.U.R.: Children Safety Project (Observe, Understand, Respond) - We don’t like to think about it, but our kids who are deaf or hard of hearing are at a higher risk for both abuse and neglect. Like any children, they are at risk. As children who might not always be able to communicate easily and fluently, or understand the nuances of conversation with neighbors, caregivers, or strangers, they are at an even higher risk of being victims of someone, somewhere... Please join me as we learn about the OUR Project and offer a few ideas that can help us protect our children as we explore the ideas of appropriate touch, team bonding and more. We will have a large group activity. One will be where the group stands in a circle holding hands, a hula hoop is past around the circle without letting go of hands. Plus, one or two more activities for the group. (Presenter: Leslie Carnegie-Hilde)

I. Working Together to Turn Struggling Readers into Eager Learners Perspectives of an Educator and a Parent - For educators and parents, few experiences are as rewarding as helping students who struggle with reading to become avid readers. Learn about the combination of forces that is helping to bring about an inspiring transformation in students. You’ll hear an AT Consultant, a parent and their student talk about the impact Bookshare has had on students. Information will be provided regarding other tools and the features that have supported her student as she progresses through middle school to senior high. (Presenters: Kristine Dooley, Beth Johnson and Ella Johnson)

SESSION DESCRIPTIONS

J. Visual Supports: Learn, Make and Take - Visual schedules, video self-modeling and social stories are three research based interventions most often used with individuals that have autism but support all individuals with disabilities. These interventions best support individuals that struggle to organize and follow multiple step processes, need many reminders to complete tasks, and individuals struggling with anxiety associated with changes or new events. Attendees will learn about and have time to ask questions and create a visual schedule, video for self-modeling and/or social story using templates and technology. Examples of items to create include steps for grooming, chore checklist, schedules for going new places or bedtime routines. Please bring personal technology devices if possible to use formats and programs that are comfortable and familiar to best support the adult creating the different visual supports. (Presenter: Tiffany Tobkin)

K. Sibshop - Celebrating the Siblings - Come meet other brothers and sisters that have siblings with special needs. We will play interactive games to help you see you’re not alone. Participants include children ages 6-16 who have a sibling with a cognitive, physical, mental health or special health care need or disability. This session is intended for siblings to connect with other siblings that have similar life experiences. We will come together to celebrate the many contributions made by brothers and sisters of siblings with a disability. This session is for the sibling(s) that does(do) not have any type of disability or health care need only! (Presenter: Pamela Moening)
