Welcome to the seventh Annual Highline Public Schools Scholar-Athlete, Coach and Community Recognition Banquet. We are extremely proud of our student athletes on and off the field. We believe athletics provides a place for students to gain valuable leadership and teamwork skills that will help them as they continue their education and pursue their dreams. Much of the success our student athletes achieve is in large part due to the support and mentorship from coaches and community members. The tireless work and dedication of these individuals creates a lasting effect on the young people they serve. I want to personally thank everyone who has made tonight possible and offer my congratulations to every individual we are honoring tonight.

I welcome you to this seventh annual signature event of celebration. I am proud to serve in the Highline School District and am very fortunate to work alongside passionate educators focused on preparing each one of our students for the future they choose. The generosity of our staff, community partners, service organizations, local businesses, passionate alumni and others allows this event to sustain and grow. We gather this evening to celebrate and recognize the significant accomplishments and contributions of our students, coaches and members of the greater Highline community who set a standard of leadership and sacrifice for others to follow. The individuals recognized tonight chose to carry education-based athletics with them along their path to success, and I am thankful for your efforts.

The Highline Schools Foundation is excited to be a partner in the seventh Annual Scholar-Athlete, Coach, and Community Relations Banquet. The Foundation was started in 1999 by parents and community members to help raise critical funds for students, teachers, and staff in Highline Public Schools. Athletics is one of the areas of focus for the Foundation as we believe that every student, regardless of their ability to pay participation fees, should be able to play their desired sport for their school. We help the district by raising the support to cover the fees that these athletes need. We also believe in the power of education to transform lives and so are excited to be part of the Scholar-Athlete program to help these students as they look beyond high school to college. We wish the very best to all the scholar-athletes being recognized this evening.

Maya Mendoza-Exstrom is in her fifth season as Sounders FC General Counsel in 2018, overseeing and advising on the legal aspects of all club and team operations, risk management and strategic planning. Prior to joining the club, Mendoza-Exstrom was in private practice for seven years at Mendoza Law Center, dealing in all manner of business transactions, serving as outside general counsel and providing assistance with corporate formation and governance, real estate transactions, intellectual property licensing, employment matters, contract negotiation and commercial litigation.

Maya attended Marvista Elementary, Valley View Elementary and Sylvester Middle School before graduating in 1999 from Highline High School. At Highline, she served as ASB President, and was a letter winner in Girls Basketball and Girls Soccer leading the Pirates to 2nd place in State in 1998. Maya holds a USSF “B” Coaching License, and has coached in Highline at all levels of the game including as a volunteer assistant at Highline HS.

Mendoza-Exstrom serves as board member for RAVE Foundation (the official charitable arm of Sounders FC), the Seattle Parks Foundation, the Wing Luke Museum, Legends of Washington Soccer, and regularly works with the Seattle Sports Commission, including co-leading Seattle’s part of the UNITED Bid to bring the 2026 FIFA World Cup to the Puget Sound. She is also serves as a youth mentor, and advocates for equity in education and access to sports, public spaces and the arts.

In Memory of Doris BurdinEvergreen Teacher & Coach

1942-2014

Doris spent her entire career of 48 years at Evergreen, where she had an enormous impact on all those she interacted with, from students to athletes to fellow teachers and community members. Not only did Doris teach academics, but she truly believed in teaching “life lessons.” From the classroom to the court, no matter who you were, you were treated with the same care, respect and expectations as everyone else, and you were always greeted with a smile and a “Good morning!”

Doris passed away October 28, 2014 after a short battle with cancer. Friends and family have created a scholarship in her name to be presented to a female scholar-athete from Evergreen.

emphasis on providing opportunities for our youth.

Membership is made up of men and women from all
