GOD'S PROMISE The lengthy passage from Samuel is a wonderful exposition of God's promise to the house of David: that his throne would forever be gloriously occupied by his descendants. Hidden in the mystery of the prophecy is the promise of the Savior, the Messiah, Son of God and Son of David. The prophet Nathan, speaking in God's name, poetically turns around David's plan to build a house for God, and announces God's plan to build a "house," that is, a dynasty for David. From this house of David will come the Messiah, the Christ, not in kingly splendor as David ruled, but as a humble man, destined to rule forever and over all. All in God’s Time One day this week I was late for daily Mass. It was a very foggy morning and there was a car accident on my way to daily Mass, but it was more my fault than the fog’s. What struck me was the Bible verse I read before Mass which said, “He who is to come will come and will not delay.” (Hebrews 10:37) I was reminded again that the Lord has a sense of humor. I can be late sometimes, but the Lord will not delay.

Have you ever thought about God’s timing in the Christmas story? Surely God could have coordinated the timing of two events, the worldwide census and the birth of the Savior. We know that the time had come for Jesus to be born. As St Paul writes, “But when the fullness of time had come, God sent his Son, born of a woman, born under the law, to ransom those under the law, so that we might receive adoption.” (Galatian 4:4-5) If Jesus was to be born according to the plan of salvation millennia in the making, why wasn’t the meaningless census delayed so that Jesus could have been born in more agreeable circumstances?

Perhaps the Lord wants to remind us that the perfect Christmas was actually imperfect and, well, messy. There’s a theological term of God coming down to our level called divine condescension. Jesus chose to fully enter into our human condition without losing His divinity. This means he had a human body and also human problems (but without sin, of course). He got hungry. He was tired. In the desert, he was tempted.

This divine condescension is on full display in the Christmas story. Jesus was rejected throughout his public ministry, but this rejection actually began at his birth as Mary and Joseph were turned away from every inn in Bethlehem. Jesus lived a simple life in poverty which began at his birth when he was laid in a feeding trough as a newborn. At a time when most parents want to stay put – at the birth of a child – Jesus’ parents are always on the move. You can bet that the Holy Family didn’t travel first class.

Our nativity scenes are often very beautiful and peaceful. If you look closely at the figures in the nativity scene maybe one of them has a smile. If your holiday season is less than perfect – perhaps you can’t celebrate in the way you want or with a person you wish were with you – I believe that smile from the nativity scene is for you. God chooses to enter our imperfect world. He wants to be close to you when nothing is going right. There’s a reason the title we use most often in this season is Emmanuel, “God with us.” I pray that you may know the gift of His presence this Christmas season, however imperfect you feel it is.

Peace,Fr. Matthew

The Traveling Chalice Ministry of Prayer for Vocations The chalice is a symbol of priesthood. The Traveling Chalice is designed to bring about a family focus to vocation prayer. The members of the CDA # 2316 want to offer our priest our support and prayers. Each week a family or individual will accept the responsibility of praying

for vocations. The chalice can be obtained in the foyer of the adoration chapel after 12 noon on a given Saturday and returned the following Sat. before noon. In order to receive the chalice for vocations one must call Helen Gravois 985-209-3157 to schedule a week ahead of time. Anyone is welcome to pray with the chalice for vocations. Our hope is that our prayers are answered and that more people will answer the call to the priesthood and religious life.

Treasures From Our Tradition

Children of the parish are somewhat focused on Santa Claus these days, who is keeping an eye on who's naughty and who's nice. Santa Claus, with his heavenly patron Saint Nicholas, has been more or less in charge of gift-giving to American children for a hundred years or so. In other places, perhaps more attentive to our Christian tradition, there are different gift-bearers. In Greece, Saint Basil delivers the presents on his feast day, December 31, and makes sure everyone is sprinkled with holy water. The Baby Jesus is in charge elsewhere, called the Christkind in Austria and Belgium, El Niño Jesús in Columbia, and Le Petit Jesus in France,

where he shares his duties with Père Noël. In the Czech Republic almost everyone is atheist, but Jeíek, the infant Jesus, brings gifts to one and all. In Poland the "Star Man" is said to bring the gifts, although often he turns out to be the village priest in disguise. Saint Nicholas, not his Americanized cousin, is the giver in Holland, where he wears a bishop's miter, and in Russia, where he wears a bishop's crown. Soviet Russia tried to dethrone Saint Nicholas and promote Grandfather Frost, but no one was much fooled by this attempt to squeeze religion out of Christ's birth. One country has a saintly woman in charge of the gifts, Saint Lucy, honored in Sweden on December 13, when children serve their parents breakfast in bed, and others awake to news that they have been nominated for a Nobel Prize. Some children have a second round of gifts on Epiphany, when the magi assume the gift-giving duties. In general, the gifts of Christmas are simple pleasures, not great heaps of treasures. Once upon a time, a new pair of socks or an orange was enough for us. No matter what gifts we receive, all of them are to point us to the true gift, and the true giver.
