As both regional and global powers, France and India must deal with growing and similar responsibilities regarding the environment, the promotion of a multi-polar world, peace, and prosperity. Bütikofer concluded that economic growth is not only imaginable as green growth, but also is the only sustainable solution for the future. As the final installment of Aspen Berlin’s roundtable series, the Institute, in coop- eration with the Hanns Seidel Foundation, invited Kim R. Homes, vice president of Foreign and Defense Policy Studies at the Heritage Foun- dation, on July 3 for a dinner and roundtable discussion. This event brought together German politicians, members of the media, senior experts, and distinguished colleagues from German companies and organizations interested in furthering transatlantic coop- eration. He presented his views on strategic independence as a stimulus for respon- sible leadership in democratic organizations on both national and international levels. 2008 Leadership Program Twenty-four young leaders — entrepreneurs, policymak- ers, journalists, lawyers, and artists, ages 25–40 — from Lebanon, Germany, and the United States convened at Aspen Berlin on May 18–20 to attend a conference on “Risk and Uncertainty: Cul- tural Approaches to Risk Management.” Following the model of previous Young Leaders conferences, the aim was to build alliances among the participants through panel discussions, seminars, and team activities in an informal atmosphere. The goal was also to understand the Middle East’s civil soci- ety, particularly in the case of Lebanon, and explore the topic of risk and uncertainty, which provided an opening for political and philosophi- cal discussions. Aspen InstItute IndIAThe Aspen Institute India (AII) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to in-depth discussion of global issues, devel-opment of values-based leadership, and a high-level exchange of opinions, information, and values. Its mis-sion is to bring a new perspective to the most important issues of the day and represent the forum of choice for convening and developing leaders in India. Focusing on India’s challenges, business community, and society, it invites top industrial, economic, financial, political, social, and cultural leaders to discuss these issues in set-tings that encourage candid and open debate.

RECENT HIGHLIGHTSFocusing on ChinaAs a part of its series on China, Aspen India hosted “Revalu-ation of Chinese Currency and its Implications for India” with Daniel Rosen, principal at China Strategic Advisory in New York and adjunct profes-sor at Columbia University’s school of International and Public Affairs. At the session, Rosen stated that after years of success using “gradualism” as a mantra, Beijing is just about out of options for turning its current growth model around with only minor adjustments.

The adjustment will have to be formidable and will have major psychological, political, and economic implications for China, India, and the rest of the world.

Strategic DialoguesThe 11th session of the US-India Strategic Dialogue was held March 30–April 2 in New Delhi in col-laboration with the Aspen Strategy Group. This dia-logue has helped both sides in bringing bilateral issues and challenges to the fore-front and has also helped develop a roadmap for future cooperation. The discus-

sions revolved around issues including US-India bilateral relations, energy security, Pakistan, the defense rela-tionship, and new directions in India’s foreign policy.

In April 2008, Aspen India and Aspen France launched the Aspen Europe-India Dia-logue. The objective of this meeting was to harness a mutual understanding and a productive cooperation between India and Europe. The two-day conference cov-ered a range of issues includ-ing globalization, environ-ment, and poverty.

Henry Crown Fellows Visit IndiaAspen India was fortunate to host Henry Crown fellows David McCormick, under secretary for International Affairs at the US Department of the Treasury, and James Lambright, chairman of the Export-Import Bank of the United States. McCormick spoke to Aspen India about the state of global markets while Lambright met with the Fellows of the India Lead-ership Initiative.

Discussions on the US Presidential ElectionIn March, Aspen India hosted former UN Ambassador Rich-ard Holbrooke, who addressed how the US policy on Iraq

is where the fundamental difference lies between the Republican and Democratic presidential candidates in the upcoming election. Then in April, Ambassador Rich-ard Haass, president of the Council on Foreign Relations and former policy advisor to former Secretary of State Colin Powell, spoke to a joint session of the Confederation of Indian Industry and Aspen India about the issues that the next US president will face with respect to US-India relations, climate change, and t errorism.

Aspen Institute Italia has established itself as a leader in promoting enlightened dialogue in Europe and across the Atlantic through conferences, seminars, and studies on a variety of international issues. It has significantly increased its membership over the past several years and has broadened its outreach through its quarterly journal, Aspenia, which is sold at bookstores throughout Italy.

Aspen Italia’s policy programs concentrate primarily on Euro-American issues, including the reorganization of a 25-member European Union, economic global governance, and the political and economic evolution of Mediterranean and Middle Eastern countries. Aspen Italia conferences and roundtables bring together high- level international leaders from business, politics, finance, and academia in off-the-record settings, often with an in-depth focus on a single topic.

The Aspen Seminars for Leaders represent an innova-tive, enriching, and distinctly European interpretation of the Aspen Executive Seminar. Open to top managers of enterprises, organizations, and associations (including non-members), these discussions have recently included themes such as infrastructure and transportation; the postmodern society; information, democracy, and communications; and the challenge of a global market for southern Italy.

In Japan, the Aspen method of dialogue has been adapted to incorpo rate Eastern — especially Japa-nese — ideas. Aspen Institute Japan offers the Nippon Aspen Executive Seminar (NAES) three or four times each year. Based on the traditional Aspen Executive Seminar, NAES features many of the original’s essential characteristics: extensive reading and intensive discus-sion; an emphasis on self-teaching, not training; and diversity as a priority at the discussion table.

As much as the seminars have in common, the readings from NAES diverge from those of the original. Compiled by two Japanese scholars who have taken the Aspen Executive Seminar, the readings have been adapted to include both Western and non-Western — in particular Japanese — values, history, traditions, and philosophy so that they may better fit Japanese leaders.

Each seminar focuses on five themes: Japan and the World, Nature and Life, Cognition, Beauty, and Faith, Humanity, and Democracy. Readings from Western sources include Dante’s Divine Comedy; the Dialogues of Plato; Immanuel Kant’s Perpetual Peace; John Locke’s Concerning Civil Government; Alexis de Tocqueville’s Democracy in America; Charles Darwin’s Origin of Species; and Francis Bacon’s Advancement of Learn-ing. The non-Western readings include The Ideals of the East, by Tenshin Okakura; The Analects, by Confucius; Flow and Stagnation: Fragments of Philosophy, by Shozo Omori; and An Encouragement of Learning, by Yukichi Fukuzawa.

RECENT HIGHLIGHTSThe year 2008 marks the 1,000th year since The Tale of Genji, the world’s oldest novel and a masterpiece of Japanese classical literature. The tale was written by a court lady known as Mura-

saki Shikibu and a series of millennium celebration events took place in Japan in honor of the world’s first romance novel. On May 31, Aspen Japan joined these millennium celebrations by offering a special lecture for the Nippon Aspen Execu-

tive Seminar alumni on the contemporary and universal significance of The Tale of Genji. Ken Akiyama, profes-sor emeritus of the Univer-sity of Tokyo and a leading scholar on The Tale of Genji, led a lecture on the author’s superb plotting, characteriza-tion, and deep insight into the depths of humanity. Fur-thermore, Akiyama discussed other aspects of the novel that have attracted worldwide readership.

on May 25 for a private conversation on the upcom-ing US election, foreign policy challenges from Iran to Kosovo, and the future of Europe.

Workshop on MulticulturalismIn Cluj on July 17–19, Aspen Romania held a workshop on multiculturalism as a follow-up to last year’s Workshop on National Identity. The workshop offered a combi-nation of musical entertain-ment and a debate between several prominent Romanian and foreign speakers includ-ing HRH Prince Radu of Romania. Some of the issues covered were the nature of multiculturalism, the atti-tude of the majority to “the other,” the risk of too much political correctness as a bar to genuine understanding, and measures to counter discrimination.

2008 Young Leaders ProgrammeThe 2008 Young Leaders Programme concluded their seminar phase after a week-long excursion in the Delta in June where they covered leadership skills and styles. For the remainder of the year the Young Leaders will work on their community service project proposals before pre-senting these to the Execu-tive Board in December.
