PrefaceBy The Coordinating Board for Higher Education

The Coordinating Board for Higher Education invites Missouri's high school students to reviewthe information presented in this 1998 listing of Advanced Placement acceptance policies andaccept the challenge of participating in the Advanced Placement program while in high school.Students who take Advanced Placement courses develop high academic expectations and deriveincreased satisfaction from challenging coursework. The completion of Advanced Placementcourses inspires a sense of achievement that serves students well in college and at work. Finally, Advanced Placement courses set a challenging standard for excellence in teaching andlearning in the high schools where they are offered. As a consequence, the Coordinating Boardfor Higher Education promotes Advanced Placement courses in high school as one means forstrengthening students' preparation for college as well as the demands placed upon high schoolgraduates who enter the work force directly out of high school.

All Missouri colleges and universities were provided the opportunity to revise their AdvancedPlacement policies. This publication reflects the most current institutional policies regardingAdvanced Placement. While every effort has been made to present the most currentinformation, it is always a good practice to contact the institution with any questions that mayarise upon review of the Advanced Placement acceptance policies contained in this report.

The Coordinating Board for Higher Education expresses its sincere appreciation to thecampus officials who assisted in the development of this document. It is the board's sincerehope that this publication will be of assistance to students, parents, high school counselors, and those Advanced Placement course teachers who are dedicated to preparing Missouri's highschool students for the challenges of today and tomorrow.

The Coordinating Board of Higher Education also wishes to thank the Advanced PlacementDirectors, Dr. Janette Ralston, Truman State University in Kirksville, and Dr. SterlingCossaboom, Southeast Missouri State University in Cape Girardeau. Their help in compilingthis information is greatly appreciated. For information concerning AP Teacher DevelopmentInstitutes, contact Dr. Ralston at 1-660-785-5396 or Dr. Cossaboom at1-573-986-6179.

On behalf of The College Board, allow me to congratulate the state of Missouri and itsCoordinating Board for Higher Education for their many efforts to broaden access for Missouristudents to the Advanced Placement Program. Overcoming a lack of student awareness of theAP Program and its benefits is critically important to the success of any such effort, and thispublication of the collegiate AP policies in the state is a major contribution to overcoming thatstruggle. Indeed, all students should know that successful AP candidates can receive baccalaure-ate credit for their achievements at an overwhelming majority of colleges and universities in theUnited States and in a growing number of institutions located in other countries.

Equally important to an enhanced awareness of the AP Program is the availability of highquality professional development opportunities for secondary school faculty willing todeliver the AP courses. Missouri and the Coordinating Board for Higher Education must becongratulated again for creating AP teacher development centers at both Southeast MissouriState and Truman State universities. As a result, teachers from throughout the state will be ableto take advantage of twenty-five financially subsidized AP teacher training courses in the sum-mer of 1998. This activity, along with many others, is being directed by Dr. Janette Ralston ofTruman State and Dr. Sterling Cossaboom of Southeast. A special word of gratitude goes to Dr.Ralston for her work in gathering the AP policy data for this booklet.

Finally, to further assist the Missouri AP initiative, The College Board has created the MissouriAdvanced Placement Advisory Council. The council will assist The College Board in its effortto tailor AP Program services to the needs of Missouri students and teachers. The council ischaired by the former Commissioner of Higher Education, Dr. Charles McClain. Thus far, others who have accepted membership on the new council are: Margaret Bahe, John BurroughsHigh School; Tom Becvar, Saint Louis University High School; Maridella Carter, Blue SpringsSouth High School; Dr. Sterling Cossaboom, Southeast Missouri State University; Dr. EdwinHiss, Washington University; Gary Kamper, Mary Institute and St. Louis Country Day School;Hank Landry, David H. Hickman High School; Dennis Lock, Jefferson City High School;Patricia Noland, Ladue Horton Watkins High School; Dr. Janette Ralston, Truman StateUniversity; Dr. Orlo Shroyer, Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education;Bragg Stanley, David H. Hickman High School; Dr. Robert Stein, Missouri Department ofHigher Education; and Connie Wells, The Pembroke Hill School.
