APRIL 28 & 29, 2018

The Rectory Business Office will be closed at

12 noon on Good Friday and will be closed on the

Monday after Easter April 2, 2018.

While today is Palm Sunday, the beginning of Holy Week, it is also March 25, the Solemnity of the Annnciation by the Archangel Gabriel (Lk 1) to Mary that she was called to be the Mother of the Son of the Most High (thus, the original name, Conception of the Lord for this feast). It was a "gift" that "came upon" Mary, not a "salary" for something she'd done, holy and sinless though she was from the day of her own Immaculate Conception in the womb of her mother Anna (celebrated December 8, nine months before the Birth of Mary which is celebrated September 8). Of course, she co-operated with her vocational call ("Fiat mihi secundum verbum tuum" -- be it done unto me according thy word"), and we celebrate nine months later, on December 25, the Birth of the Lord (aka "Christsmas"). Because the Annunication has the highest possible liturgical rank, even if it is overridden by a Sunday of Lent (Palm Sunday), its celebration is transferred to a later date, outside Lent (this year, it will fall on Monday, April 9, because the days within the Octave of Easter (the first week after Easter Sunday) are considered intimately bound up with Easter Sunday, so as to block everything else from view in the blazing light of the Resurrection of Christ from the dead – without which, as St Paul says, "our faith is worthless" and "we are to be considered the most pitiable of men" (1Cor 15:17-19). Last week I noted with due gravity the levity attendant upon Laetare Sunday and encouraged everyone to participate in it by reading the account of Old Ironsides and the "rum" it took to fuel it! Gives new meaning to phrase "rum run." This week, Holy Week is a time of joyful sobriety, combin-ing as it does the outbursts of praise during Palm Sunday's procession of palms accompanying Jesus' entrance into Jerusalem, with the bitter end endured on Good Friday. And then came the "magic moment," so incomprehensible that when it was staring the disciples in the face, they could-n't wrap their minds around it: Jesus rose from the dead, and appeared to them. In order to appre-ciate a little such a "magic moment" of amazement, I invite you to enjoy the following Mother of All Magic Tricks (if you can figure this one out, let me know): https://www.youtube-nocookie.c om/embed/xh9GaDgRWX4?rel=0 It has been performed on TV in front of live viewers (Penn and Teller), who couldn't believe it: just as the apostles couldn't believe their eyes. Question: is the Resurrection just some sleight of hand, however clever, to dupe dumb disciples? If Jesus really did rise from the dead, what could it possibly "mean"? Well, back in 2008, Anthony Flew, the dean of 20th century philosophical atheism, satirical and witty mocker of all things Christian and theistic, wrote a book There is a God: How the World's Most Notorious Atheist Changed His Mind (HarperOne, 2008). An appendix on the Resurrection outlines arguments of Anglican Bishop N T Wright for its truth. Anthony Flew died April 8, 2010 (just four days after East-er). His former admirers dismissed his change of heart as due to senility. The kernel of Holy Week is the Triduum (the "three-day day"), which starts on Good Friday (which itself begins Holy Thursday evening with the Mass of the Lord's Supper, just as Sunday begins on Saturday evening, by traditional Jewish reckoning of time, the first half of the day being the time of darkness, the second half being the time of light), continues through Holy Saturday when Christ lay in the tomb (the Immortal One, mortal; Life itself, dead -- as a 2nd century author put it), and into Easter which begins with the Easter Vigil on Saturday evening and continues through Vespers on Sunday. The Easter "Vigil" is meant to be a "night watch" (the "Mother of all Vigils," GIRM), with prayer all night long, to conclude at dawn on Sunday; but we shorten it down to 2.5 hours, with blessing of the Easter Candle, Vigil of Readings, and Mass, during which the adult Baptisms, Confirmations, and First Communions occur for those who have been preparing to come into the Church for the last year or so – because in ancient times they continued to wear their white baptismal robes ("albs") all week long, and take them off on the Sunday following Easter, the sec-ond Sunday of Easter season came to be known as "White Sunday" ("Dominica in Albis"). Easter Season continues through until Vespers on Pentecost Sunday, the 50th Day of Easter Season (7 x 7 plus 1 = "the completeness of completeness, and then some ..." and is a cipher for "heaven be-gun on earth"). Lent originally extended backwards 40 days pre-Triduum (5 days of Holy Week + 5x7 for 5 weeks before Palm Sunday = 40 days, the 1st Sunday of Lent being "Quadrigesima" Sun-day), but then 6 days were subtracted, for Sundays as non-fast days, and you had to add 4 more for Ash Wednesday-Saturday, and 2 more for Good Friday and Easter Saturday, until noon, to make it 40 again)!

St. Joseph Parish Religious Education The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (R.C.I.A) is the process for individuals to become Catholic and receive the sacra-ments of initiation - Baptism, Confirmation, and the Eucharist. The parish community is encouraged to invite those interested to explore this process, and also to support them in prayer as they continue in this spiritual journey with Jesus Christ and His Church. Anyone interested in becoming Catholic may attend these meetings during the year to learn more information about the RCIA process and the Catholic faith. Contact the parish office for further information.

Week of March 25 – Holy Week Scripture: John 21:15 – When they had finished breakfast, Jesus said to Simon Peter, “Simon, son of John, do you love me more than these?” He said to him, “Yes, Lord; you know that I love you.” He said to him, “Feed my lambs.” YouCat: Question 337- How are we saved? Question: What did Jesus tell John when he was on the cross? Virtue: Servitude Saint: John the Apostle Faith Tid-Bit: This Sunday we find ourselves at a crossroads. As we approach the great mystery of Christ’s Death and Resurrection, we are coming to the end of our Lenten journey. It is a time to both look back and reflect, and to look forward and prepare. Holy Week is a unique time in the Church calendar where we are suddenly walking mi-nute by minute with Jesus as he goes through his Passion, Death, and Resurrection. Starting today with palm Sun-day, we enter into Jesus’ life in “real time”. The way God works in time during this week can really help us to enter into friendship with Jesus as we walk with him in his sufferings. -Formed.org

BUILDING A CULTURE OF VOCATIONS

HOW WOULD YOU REACT if your son said he wants to be a priest?

A. I would ask him if he’s gone mad, and I would remind him that we must take into consideration what others might think.

B. I would ask him to give it considerable thought and to have a university degree first.

C. It would give me one of the greatest joys of my life, and I would support him fully.

Highlight of this week: THE FOURTH CUP—AUDIO

Well-known Catholic theologian Dr. Scott Hahn explains Christ’s Paschal Sacrifice on the Cross as the fulfillment of the traditional fourth cup used in the celebration of the Jewish Passover meal. He draws a symbolic parallel to the Last Supper and Christ’s death on Calvary. Through his scholarly insights and important biblical connections, the mass will come alive for you as never before!

St. Joseph Catholic School was thrilled to be able to host the Portland Archdiocese 6th grade vocation rally. It was a blessed event for all 185 students that were able to attend between Eugene and Portland. Stu-dents spent the day learning about the various vocations; priest-hood, consecrated life, married life, and permanent diaconate.

The morning began with prayer, singing and speakers. Students partook in games and group activities. It was a day filled with fun, games and a deeper understanding of vocations and our faith. The excitement that the students brought back into the school once the rally was over was palpable. A blessed event for all! St. Joseph 6th grade student, Megan Reich had this to say about the day, “My favorite part of the event was that you could hear individuals’ stories and re-flect on those stories. This was a great event!”
