that tovm for an attack on 18 December. Combat -command "HO ;, L..E" was to attack 100745A December in conjunction with · the VII Corps in the direction of OBERGRICH 053473, GEICH 059474 and EC~TZ 070464. At 1400, 9 December Hq 3rd Bn 33d Armd Regt moved to LAUGER- -\'1EHE F~030475. By 1800, "C", "G", and "H" Companies arrlved into the assembly area in vicinity LAUGffi\iEHE F-030476.

At 0730, 10 December the leading elements moved out. "C" Company received artillery fire and encountered mines. By 0920, "G" Company lost 4 tanks through enemy action, and the remainder were stuck in the mud. "H" Company which had supported the attack by fire then pressed forward. Attached ~nfantry were pinned dovm by mortar and small arms

re. By 1700, "H" Company had pushed to a point half way between OBERGJ•:ICH and GEICH u ~ F-055475 but at 1800 had to pull back into OBERGEICH for night security. Main enemy elements encountered were those of the German 3rd Parachute Division.·

at 0800, ll December 11 H11 Company jumped off toward GEICH. They met slight resistance and reached the objective of G.!ilCH within a half hour. By 1400, "G" Company hating retreived their boggedtanks, advanced on ECHTZ and reached the Southwest edge of the town. Enemy AT ·gun was located at F-075471. The Bn CP moved to GEICH F-057475.

B. - Period 19 December to 31 December 1944 (Inclusiye).

During the night 16 - 17 December enemy paratroopers were dronned at various points, throuthout the 1st Army Zone of Action. On the morning of 17 December an all out enemy counter offensive and drive to the ~·.est was launched on the Southern par t of the V Corps and all of the VIII Corps sector of the 1st Army front. Initial objectives appeared to be bO~CnAU F-935250, 1iAU.i'r.;J)Y K-788045,- ST VITH P-853382, and HA 0-:'0GRE P-5558.

Prisoners and llilitary Intelligence soon revealed that the enemy under cover of darkness and the low overcast of the preceding days and skillfully utilizing all possible camoufla :~e meas~es had been able to concentrate initially, at least 6 infantry, 4 panzer and 1 parachute divisions in this sector for the offensive. It was to be an all out offensive utilizing airborne forces to seize important road junctions and bridges and to disrupt communications. The advance elements of some fighting units of the enemy were to utilize American vehicles and uniforms and pose as American soldiers in order to assist in the initial break-throu~. In the initial stages of the counter-offensive this l , __ ception was successful. Captured paratroopers that came down in v1idely scattered groups on the night of 16/17 December said they were under the command of Colonel VonDer Heitde

,_,later captured) and their mission was to seize and hold a road junction at K-840163 ap.Jroximat ely 12 kilometers North of V.illrEDY, until relieved by advancing elements. This

would prevent American reinforcements from coming East or ~outh to bloc~ the proposed : · ~ counter-offensive. On the next two nights, the 17th and 18th and 18th and 19th more para- -:· .. troopers were dropped in widely scattered groups due to faulty fiying, anti-aircraft :'-· f

defense and adverse flying conditions. Generally the mission was a failure and few of those paratroopers reached their destination.

Y.~ving concentratod such a potent striking force in the weakest sector of the First Army Front and achieving almost complete surprise, the enemy's initial gains were rapid. The defending American units fought bravely and stubbornly against overwhelming odds but were overrun or forced back alo!lg the Southern part of the V Corps e.nd the VIII C0rps sector. By the end of the 1st day December 17th, ~n amemy spearhead had penetrated to K-8303. On subsequent days further.eremy penetration and progress was made at STAVELOT Y-"'18010, 1:AU EDY K-790043, ST VITl-I P-853882. :!Yiore and more German reserves were being ~ into this action including elements of che German 5th and 6th Armored Armiss.

For the first time since NORMA!mY, the enemy was usin.; his air force in strength and on both1he First and Third Army fronts many of our troops receiv~d their first enemy air action.

:t/ ilitary Intelligence through the mediwn of priso"lors, captured docwnents and orders soon discovered that the plan of General VO~ RU~STEDT of the German High Command v;as to break through the ARDENFES to the r.~EUSE tatdng VEHVI8RS and LIEGE and then pushing Yorth to ANT'f.'ERP thus sealins off large elements of the Allied Forces East of this penetration. At the same time a secondary ·attack might b~ lau~ched against our forces from the CC'LOGNE plain toward AACHEN and LIEGE.

Ylhen the enemy penetration was effected. Higher Headquarters cornmi tted add:i ~ior:al ~ inforc ements on the Forthern and Southern flanks of t he penetration to contain it. As •re enemy reserves were committed to exploit the penetration a nd the plan of the German

High Command became more obvious, it was necessary to commit more and greater Allied forces to contain and counter the enemy penetration. This period of action from 19 December through 31 December describes the action of this unit in those memorable days.

In view of the Widespread dropping of small groups of enemy paratroppers, all units of the Regiment immediately strengthened existing security measures, however none of the enemy were reported or apprehended in the immediate area during the period 17 through 22 Dec~mber.

On Monday, December leth. CC"A" of the 3d Armored Division on orders from Higher Headquarters moved South to vicinity of ZUPEN K-7927 to stand by to repuls~ enemy thrusts in that area and as.sist in protection of 5upply a :y· rear installations in the general vicinity sr LISGE, SPA and ~ERVISRS. Other units of the Division continued to stand by ~xpecting orders of a similar nature at any hour. ·
