Face-bow (fsbo):A device used in dentistry to record the positional
relations of the maxillary arch to the temporo-mandibular joints
A caliperlike device used in dentistry to record therelationship of the jaws to the temporomandibular
joints.
And to orient dental casts in this same relationship to
the opening axis of the articulator.

Articulator:
A "dental machine" that works as close as practical to the way the
mouth works.Dental stone casts / Record bases are placed on the machine for:
- examination, diagnosis & monitoring of occlusal relations.
- constructing occlusion of dental appliances.
Special records are taken to accurately position the dental models onthe articulator.
A mechanical device used in dentistry to which casts of the maxillary
(upper) and mandibular (lower) teeth are fixed, reproducing recorded
positions of the mandible in relation to the maxilla.
An articulator assists in the fabrication of removable prosthodontic
appliances (dentures), fixed prosthodontic restorations (crowns,
bridges, inlays and onlays) and orthodontic appliances.

Types of Articulators:Non-Adjustable: Simple hinge / PLAs & FPAs / AVAs.
PLAS: - Not true articulators (Occludators / Cast relators.
- Teeth set in one occlusal position (ICP) (not allowing Eccentricmovements).
- Changes in OVD introduce errors in CRP.
- Used for making inlays / onlays.
- not for doing occlusal analyses & diagnosis.
FPAs / AVAs:- employs average values for Condylar / incisal angles.
- can establish average tooth-condyle relations.
- do not allow adjustments (use fixed / average values).
- fixed values used for compensating curves.- Need for Intra-oral adjustment id individual values differs.
- not suitable for final correction / refinement of occlusion.
Adjustable: SAA (Arcon / non-Arcon) & FAA (Arcon).

SAAs:Adjustable in 2-dimensions.
Adjustable condylar / incisal / Bennett Angles.
Adjustable to relate ridges and teeth to the above angles.
Types: Dentatus / Hanau / Whipmix.
Arcon: Condylar fossae on upper member.
Non-Arcon: Condylar fossae on Lower member.
FAAs:
Adjustable in 3-dimensions.
Changes in OVD compatible with retruded arc of closure.
Records returned to ICP if mounted in ICP
Used for diagnosis, analyses, prognosis / adjustments in
occlusion of complex nature (full-mouth-rehab cases).
Limited use in CD work / GD practice.
Examples: Denar, Stuart, TMJ Verticulator).

Factors of Articulator Selection:Nature of Prosthetic / Restorative work:
PLA: - for CDs, inlays, single crowns & bridges up-to 3-units.
SAA: - for most restorative work.FAA: - for complex cases.
- Restorations depending on complete control of
occlusion.
- detailed analyses of occlusion & Full-mouth-rehab.Experience of Dentist & Technician:
- familiar with the type, design, mounting & adjustment
procedures of the articulator.
Using a complex articulator is of no value if:- the benefits it offer cannot be obtained from it.
Does not pay to complicate an articulator beyond certain level:
as this makes it impracticable / difficult to handle with no
corresponding advantage.
