The Holy Season of Lent

Monday Evening Lenten Study - “Live Lent” A group is gathering Mondays, 5-6:30pm in the living room to study and share about the upcoming readings for the Sundays of Lent.

St. Patrick’s Day - dispensation from Lenten Abstinence Bishop Hoeppner has granted a general dispensation from the obli-gation of abstinence from meat on Friday, March 17th 2017, the Commemoration of Saint Patrick.

Those taking advantage of the dispensation, are encouraged to undertake a work of charity, an exercise of piety, or act of compa-rable penance on some other occasion during the Second Week of Lent. (March 12-18)

Singing in the Choir Lent is a wonderful time to join our choir as we prepare the music for all the beautiful and powerful liturgies of Holy Week (Palm Sunday, Holy Thursday, Good Friday, Easter Vigil, Easter Sunday) and including the Chrism Mass (6:30 pm, Monday, April 10th) with Bishop Hoeppner.

We practice on Wednesdays from 7 to 8 pm (usually!) in the church. For the Chrism Mass there will be one extra practice on Tuesday, April 4th from 7 to 9 pm. For that practice, we may be joined by other choir members from other parishes since the choir for the Chrism Mass is one that is amassed from the entire diocese. Practices for this special choir are held around the diocese as well, i.e., Moorhead and Bemidji. Come join us as we give glory and praise to our God thru music!

Holy Week Liturgical Ministries As one can imagine, or has experienced, Holy Week is packed full of glorious liturgies celebrating the Paschal Mystery of the Passion, Death and Resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ. For these litur-gies, we need MANY, MANY hands and feet to bring these to life. Please stop in the gathering space and look thru the many “spots” that are open for you to be involved, from getting your feet washed to proclaiming the Word, from welcoming those who come to distributing Holy Communion.

Thank you for filling in these blanks as quickly as possible so that on this end we can provide any guidance or training that you may need in the days ahead.

Question: Why don’t we empty the Baptismal Font for the whole of Lent like we used to? A 2003 Letter from the Vatican Congregation for Divine Worship clarified what was becoming a ‘trend’ to empty baptismal fonts (and refrain from celebrating Baptisms during Lent) it reads, in part: “...Removing Holy Water from the fonts during the season of Lent is not permitted: First, it is contrary to a balanced understanding of Lent, which though truly being a season of penance, is also a

season rich in the symbolism of water and baptism… Second, the Church’s encouragement to regularly receive the Sacraments should be understood as including the Lenten Season. The “fast” and “abstinence” which the faithful embrace does not include abstaining from the Church's Sacraments (Holy Baptism) or sacramentals (the use of Holy Water). However, there is a longstanding practice...to empty Holy Water fonts on the days of the Sacred Triduum [Holy Thursday after the Mass of the Lord’s Supper];...those days on which the Eucharist is not celebrated (i.e., Good Friday and Holy Saturday) in preparation of the blessing of Holy Water at the Vigil on Holy Saturday Night.”
