She moved here 24 years ago from Lowell, MA with her husband, Russell. Right away she spotted the future home for her salon, but due to uncontrolla- ble circumstances she would have to start out at a different location. In 1988, she opened Barbers Unlimited, a little 3 seater Barber Shop in an old fishing cottage nestled under the old oak trees on US Hwy 1 in Sebastian now known as Auto Zone. Gloria and Russell opened a video store named, Highland Video on Sebastian Blvd. It was through this video store where she started building her business. After having to vacate the property due to death and sale of the property, Gloria rented a booth at Paradise Hair Designers where she stayed for almost 10 years. Gloria was somehow thrown into a much needed change so she found herself working at a salon back on US Hwy 1 where she stayed for about 3 years. The summer of 2007 was when her real opportu- nity opened up. Two condos side by side would give her 1500 sq. ft. for a full service salon. The salon would now become a reality for Gloria. “This is a dream come true.” On November 26, 2007, Gloria opened her dream salon. Shear Tranquility was even bigger and better than I had ever dreamed of. Our salon is unique to this area. Each stylist has their own room for privacy. We are on the corner of Barber St. & Sebastian Blvd. (CR 512), nestled in between a flower shop and RE/MAX Crown Realty. We offer hair care using the latest technology and techniques. Nail care using a full line of OPI Products, skin care using Circadia, make-up artistry and various waxing needs as well, massage therapy– offering every- thing from Swedish (relaxing) to therapeutic (deep tissue) as well as hot stone massage. We also offer ETPS– Electro-Therapeutic-Point- Stimulation (needless acupuncture). This covers a various range of pain management-conditions. Permanent Make-Up by appointment–Eye liner, Eye brows, and Lips, your choice. Joined by two very experienced and talented styl- ists: Lynn Kline and Kathy Leck. We have room for growth and are looking for another stylist with some clientele. My skin care specialist, Krystal Murdock, can assist you with your skin care and waxing needs, covering, acne problems to anti- aging and make-up for weddings, proms, or any other special occasion. Kat Gehrke, our massage therapist rocks when it comes to massaging needs. The products used in our salon are top of the line such as Goldwell, L’Oreal, Redkin, Pureology, Rusk, KMS, Matrix, Coppela Keratin Smoothing System, OPI, Circadia and Intaglio. Our newest addition to our color line is L’Oreal INOA color– the color of the future. This color is great for the more sensitive scalps and people with allergy is- sues. We offer gift certificates for all occasions. Each one of us at Shear Tranquility is here to make your visit with us a pleasant one. We take pride in our new salon and our MANY years of experience. Stop in and visit with us or call 772- 581-1082 and make your appointment today. November 2010 Beth L. Mitchell, Executive Director

While a lot of folks believe that it was some vast government conspiracy to confuse us in our schedules, there really was a reason that Day Light Saving Time was created. The change to Daylight Saving Time allows us to use less energy in lighting our homes and businesses by tak-ing advantage of the longer and later daylight hours and was originally created during World War I. In 2007 an extra four weeks was added to the schedule, and so now we "fall back" at 2 a.m. on the first Sunday in November (7) by setting our clock back one hour and thus returning to Standard Time. We have had a phenomenal response from New Members who have joined the Chamber in the last six weeks. Fifteen new businesses have made the chamber choice and they are all listed here in the Currents with their contact information. These new businesses are great leads for all of you, and giving them a call may create opportunities for everybody! We welcome them! Our November schedule is packed with something for everybody. We have a unique seminar on Social Media, to be held here at the Chamber on November 9. Nate Archibald will be providing tips and techniques to our Chamber members on how to stay current and maximize the new technology to promote business. Our guest speaker at lunch this month is Emily Holliman, CEO of Sebastian River Medical Center, and there may be some surprises at the lunch. We also have a relaxing, fun evening planned for our Annual Awards and Installation Party, this year scheduled at Capt’n Butcher’s Hall & Deck, we’ve made it very affordable for everybody, and we will be en-joying the catered food from Red Rooster Café, with a backdrop of Jamaican Steel Drum sounds. We are preparing for our “season,” which by the way, will be one month longer this year, not be-cause of daylight saving time, but because Easter is at the very end of April 2011. Here in the office we are stocking up on brochures, menus, business cards, and promotional materials for all of our anticipated walk in visitors. If you have materials for us to provide, please bring them in to supplement our inventory. Since we receive over five thousand visitors each year, we distribute an abundance of materials! Since this is the month for thanks, we would like to mention a few board members who have really stepped up to the plate this year. Our leader, Debbi Vickers, has quietly supported our ef-forts to make this a progressive and GROWING Chamber, and we appreciate her efforts. Theresa Tolle has spent many hours building our Legislative/Government Affairs committee and has led us to become a more proactive Chamber, advocating for our businesses. Patti Jamar gifted our office with a fabulous flat screen television so we can showcase our videos and pic-tures in the Visitors Center. All of our board members have been dedicated in the roles they have played this year, and we wanted to say “Thank You” to each and everyone of them! I know its early to think about Christmas, at least for some of us, but just a reminder, Light Up Night is just around the corner, and we hope to have great participation from our businesses in the community this year! It is definitely a Sebastian tradition! Have a Happy Thanksgiving with family and friends!
