Dear brothers and sisters in Christ, Time sure seems to be flying by, with only two more weeks until Spring break, which will mark the halfway point of my last semester at the Seminary. It was 2013 when I entered the Seminary, with high hopes and excitement for the chance to learn all the things that a Catholic priest would know.

I never served as an altar server, never served as a lector, never heard of the word Eucharistic Minister, didn’t know there were permanent deacons, along with so many other things that I had no idea existed in the Catholic Church. Looking back at the six years, it still amazes me how I got through it all. I keep telling the other guys at the Seminary, I don’t know how I was able to make it through the six years of classes, events, prayers and all the extra responsibilities. It has been an interesting roller coaster ride of ups and downs, spiritually and emotionally.

July of 2018, I was assigned to St. Elizabeth’s in Wyckoff as a transitional deacon. It was the first time en-

countering a parish like St. Elizabeth, with 60 plus ministries, three full time priests and a permanent deacon, along with so many staff members to keep St. Elizabeth such a busy and vibrant parish.

I remember writing, “If I can survive at St. Elizabeth’s, I can survive anywhere”, in my first letter for the

bulletin after I began my assignment. I now write to you with only about two full months left until end of my as-signment at St. Elizabeth’s. I can say with gratitude to everyone at St. Elizabeth’s how amazing it has been to be part of the parish family. I had the opportunity to experience so many different things. I feel so blessed to have had the chance to be assigned here. I hope I can experience as much as possible until the end of my assignment and continue to learn what it means to be a good priest. We need more good priests in the Church.

Your hopeful servant in Christ, Deacon Steve Chun

ARCHDIOCESAN LENTEN REGULATIONS 1. The days of both Fast & Abstinence during Lent are Ash Wednes-

day and Good Friday. If possible, the fast on Good Friday is contin-

ued until the Easter Vigil (on Holy Saturday night) as the “paschal

fast” to honor the suffering and death of the Lord Jesus, and to pre-

pare ourselves to share more fully and to celebrate more readily His

Resurrection.

The other Fridays of Lent are days of Abstinence.

On a day of Fast, only one (1) full meal is permitted and (2) small-

er meals which, if added together, would not exceed the main

meal in quantity.

Those between the ages of 18-59 are obliged to fast. On a day of

Abstinence, no meat may be eaten. Those who have reached the

age of 14 are obliged by the law of abstinence.

2. The obligation to observe the laws of Fast & Abstinence

“substantially” or as whole is a serious obligation.

3. The Fridays of the year, outside of Lent, are designated as days

of penance, but each individual may substitute for the traditional

abstinence from meat some other practice of voluntary self-denial as

penance.

4. The time for fulfilling the Paschal Precept (Easter Duty*) extends

from the First Sunday of Lent, March 10, 2019 to the Solemnity of

the Holy Trinity, June 16,2019.

*Canon 920. §1 All the faithful, after they have been initiated into the Most

Holy Eucharist, are bound by the obligation of receiving Communion at

least once a year..
