Surah al-Ma’aarij (The Ascending Stairways)

�� ح�يم �الر ح$من� �الر الله� � م �س$ ب

In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful


و,اق�ع( �ع,ذ,اب( ب �ل1 ائ س, ,ل, أ س,

[70:1] One demanding, demanded the chastisement which must befall


د,اف�ع1 ,ه: ل $س, ,ي ل ,اف�رين, $ك <ل ل

[70:2] The unbelievers-- there is none to avert it--


$م,ع,ار�ج� ال ذ�ي �ه� الل م<ن,

[70:3] From Allah, the Lord of the ways of Ascent.


) ,و$م ي ف�ي $ه� ,ي �ل إ وح: Iو,الر ,ة: �ك ئ $م,ال, ال ج: ,ع$ر: ت,ة( ن س, ,ل$ف, أ ين, خ,م$س� ه: م�ق$د,ار: ,ان, ك

[70:4] To Him ascend the angels and the Spirit in a day the measure of which is fifty thousand years.


Vج,م�يال ا Vر$ ص,ب �ر$ ف,اص$ب

[70:5] Therefore endure with a goodly patience.


,ع�يدVا ب ,ه: و$ن ,ر, ي �ه:م$ �ن إ

[70:6] Surely they think it to be far off,


Vا ق,ر�يب اه: ,ر, و,ن

[70:7] And We see it nigh.


$م:ه$ل� ,ال ك م,اء �الس :ون: ,ك ت ,و$م, ي

[70:8] On the day when the heaven shall be as molten copper


$ع�ه$ن� ,ال ك ,ال: ب $ج� ال :ون: ,ك و,ت

[70:9] And the mountains shall be as tufts of wool


ح,م�يمVا ح,م�يم1 ,ل: أ ,س$ ي و,ال,

[70:10] And friend shall not ask of friend


م�ن$ ,د�ي ,ف$ت ي ,و$ ل $م:ج$ر�م: ال Iو,د, ي ,ه:م$ ون ,ص�ر: :ب ي�يه� ,ن �ب ب �ذ( ,و$م�ئ ي ع,ذ,اب�

[70:11] (Though) they shall be made to see each other. The guilty one would fain redeem himself from the chastisement of that day by (sacrificing)

his children,


يه� ,خ� و,أ �ه� ,ت ب و,ص,اح�

[70:12] And his wife and his brother


:ؤ$ويه� ت �ي �ت ال �ه� ,ت و,ف,ص�يل

[70:13] And the nearest of his kinsfolk who gave him shelter,


يه� :نج� ي �:م ث ج,م�يعVا ر$ض�, األ$ ف�ي و,م,ن

[70:14] And all those that are in the earth, (wishing) then (that) this might deliver him.


ل,ظ,ى �ه,ا �ن إ �,ال ك

[70:15] By no means! Surely it is a flaming fire


و,ى �<لش ل Vاع,ة �,ز ن

[70:16] Dragging by the head,


,و,ل�ى و,ت ,ر, د$ب, أ م,ن$ ,د$ع:و ت

[70:17] It shall claim him who turned and fled (from truth),


و$ع,ى , ف,أ و,ج,م,ع,

[70:18] And amasses (wealth) then shuts it up.


:وعVا ه,ل خ:ل�ق, ان, �نس, اإل$ ��ن إ

[70:19] Surely man is created of a hasty temperament


وعVا ج,ز: Iر �الش ه: �م,س �ذ,ا إ

[70:20] Being greatly grieved when evil afflicts him


:وعVا م,ن $ر: ي $خ, ال ه: �م,س �ذ,ا و,إ

[70:21] And niggardly when good befalls him


<ين, $م:ص,ل ال ��ال إ

[70:22] Except those who pray,


�م:ون, د,ائ �ه�م$ ت ص,ال, ع,ل,ى ه:م$ �ذ�ين, ال

[70:23] Those who are constant at their prayer


:وم1 م�ع$ل qح,ق �ه�م$ م$و,ال, أ ف�ي �ذ�ين, و,ال

[70:24] And those in whose wealth there is a fixed portion.


� وم $م,ح$ر: و,ال �ل� ائ �<لس ل

[70:25] For him who begs and for him who is denied (good)


الد<ين� � ,و$م �ي ب :ص,د<ق:ون, ي �ذ�ين, و,ال

[70:26] And those who accept the truth of the judgment day


<ه�م ب ر, ع,ذ,اب� م<ن$ ه:م �ذ�ين, و,الف�ق:ون, مIش$

[70:27] And those who are fearful of the chastisement of their Lord--


م:ون( $ م,أ $ر: غ,ي <ه�م$ ب ر, ع,ذ,اب, ��ن إ

[70:28] Surely the chastisement of their Lord is (a thing) not to be felt secure of--


ح,اف�ظ:ون, وج�ه�م$ �ف:ر: ل ه:م$ �ذ�ين, و,ال

[70:29] And those who guard their private parts,


,ت$ ,ك م,ل م,ا و$, أ و,اج�ه�م$ ,ز$ أ ع,ل,ى ��ال إ

:وم�ين, م,ل $ر: غ,ي �ه:م$ �ن ف,إ :ه:م$ $م,ان ي, أ

[70:30] Except in the case of their wives or those whom their right hands possess-- for these surely

are not to be blamed,


ه:م: �ك, ,ئ و$ل: ف,أ �ك, ذ,ل اء و,ر, ,غ,ى $ت اب ف,م,ن�

$ع,اد:ون, ال

[70:31] But he who seeks to go beyond this, these it is that go beyond the limits--


و,ع,ه$د�ه�م$ �ه�م$ ,ات م,ان, أل� ه:م$ �ذ�ين, و,ال

اع:ون, ر,

[70:32] And those who are faithful to their trusts and their covenant


�م:ون, ق,ائ �ه�م$ ه,اد,ات �ش, ب ه:م �ذ�ين, و,ال

[70:33] And those who are upright in their testimonies,


:ح,اف�ظ:ون, ي �ه�م$ ت ص,ال, ع,ل,ى ه:م$ �ذ�ين, و,ال

[70:34] And those who keep a guard on their prayer,


م:ون, $ر, مIك �ات( ن ج, ف�ي �ك, ,ئ و$ل: أ

[70:35] Those shall be in gardens, honored.


م:ه$ط�ع�ين, ,ل,ك, ق�ب وا ,ف,ر: ك �ذ�ين, ال ف,م,ال�

[70:36] But what is the matter with those who disbelieve that they hasten on around you,


ع�ز�ين, م,ال� الش< و,ع,ن� ,م�ين� $ي ال ع,ن�

[70:37] On the right hand and on the left, in sundry parties?


:د$خ,ل, ي ,ن أ $ه:م$ م<ن ام$ر�ئ( Iل: ك ,ط$م,ع: ,ي أ ) ,ع�يم ن �ة, ن ج,

[70:38] Does every man of them desire that he should be made to enter the garden of bliss?


,م:ون, ,ع$ل ي م<م�ا ,اه:م ,ق$ن ل خ, �ا �ن إ �,ال ك

[70:39] By no means! Surely We have created them of what they know.


$م,غ,ار�ب� و,ال ار�ق� $م,ش, ال ب< �ر, ب م: :ق$س� أ ف,ال,ون, ,ق,اد�ر: ل �ا �ن إ

[70:40] But nay! I swear by the Lord of the Easts and the Wests that We are certainly able


,ح$ن: ن و,م,ا $ه:م$ م<ن ا Vر$ ي خ, ,د<ل, Iب ن ,ن أ ع,ل,ى:وق�ين, ب �م,س$ ب

[70:41] To bring instead (others) better than them, and We shall not be overcome.


ق:وا :ال, ي �ى ت ح, :وا $ع,ب ,ل و,ي ,خ:وض:وا ي ه:م$ ف,ذ,ر$:وع,د:ون, ي �ذ�ي ال ,و$م,ه:م: ي

[70:42] Therefore leave them alone to go on with the false discourses and to sport until they come face to face with that day of theirs with which

they are threatened;


اعVا ر, س� ,ج$د,اث� األ$ م�ن, ج:ون, ,خ$ر: ي ,و$م, ي:وف�ض:ون, ي :ص:ب( ن �ل,ى إ �ه:م$ ن

[70:43] The day on which they shall come forth from their graves in haste, as if they were

hastening on to a goal,


�ك, ذ,ل �ة1 ذ�ل ه,ق:ه:م$ ,ر$ ت ه:م$ $ص,ار: ,ب أ Vع,ة خ,اش�:وع,د:ون, ي :وا ,ان ك �ذ�ي ال ,و$م: $ي ال

[70:44] Their eyes cast down; disgrace shall overtake them; that is the day which they were

threatened with.
