CONSTRUCTIONSUBMITTALCONCEPTS
CutSheet–Asetofdataorinformationonaproductormaterialthatispre-manufactured.Forexampleyougetcutsheetsofwashroomaccessories,lightfixtures,caulkinganddrywallcomponents.ShopDrawing–somethingthatiscustombuiltoralteredtosuit
siteconditions.Shopdrawingswillincludeplans,elevations,sectionsetcofeachcomponenttobeinstalled.Shopdrawingsaretypicallyprovidedforstructuralsteel,rebar,miscmetals,tilelayoutsetc.Theintentionofshopdrawingsistoprovidesitespecificinstallationinstructions.Samples–samplesarebasicallywhattheysaytheyare.Samples
aresmallpiecesorfullsizepiecesofproductswhichrepresentthefinalproducttobeinstalled.Someproductssuchastilemayrequirethatarangeofsamplesbesubmitted.Thiswayyouthearchitectwillgetabetterunderstandingoftherangeofacceptableinflectioninaproduct.Mockups–wheremultiplematerialscometogethertheconsultant
orownermayrequestamockup.Mockupsaregreatwaytocontrolqualityasalotoftheinterfacescanbefiguredoutinadvance.Basicallyamockupisalargesectionofaspecificmaterialorsetofconstrucitonmaterialsinstalledtolooklikethefinalproduct.

Scheduling,oneofthecornerstonesofasuccessfulprojectandonethatalotofpeopleshyawayfrom.We’veallbeenbeenonthatprojectwherethescheduleisbehind,theschedulewhenpresentedisconfusingornon-existentandit’syourjobtomakethemostsenseofit.Whenyougoogletheterm“schedule”awiderangeofsubjects

structureasyourcategorieswithinyourschedule.Theyarebucketswhereyoucanentercategoriesandallowyoutodisplayyourinformationinamoreorganizedfashion.Agoodexampleofaworkbreakdownstructurecategorymightbe“Substructure”or“Superstructure”Activities–Activitiesarethebreadandbutterofyourschedule,
eachactivityislistedalongtheYAxisofthescheduleandrepresentsanitemofworkonyourproject.Activitieshavedurations(whichwewillgetinto)andfitwithinacategoryorworkbreakdown.Agoodexampleofacategorymightbe“PlaceConcrete–Level03”.Durations–durationsarethelengthoftimethataparticular
activitywilltakeandthusthelengthofthebarinthegiantchart.Activitiesaretypicallysetuptobe“days”indurationbutmorecomplexschedulingsoftwarescangetdownintothehoursandminutes.Relationships–relationshipsarereallyoneofthemostimportant
partofaschedule.Activitiesandworkbreakdownstructurewithoutrelationshipsarereallyjustanorganizedlist.Relationshipsdefinewhatactivitiesarebeforeandafteranactivityandaretypicallyrepresentedonaschedulewithblackarrows.Therearedifferenttypesofactivitiesbutthemostcommonandwidelyusedisfinishtostart.Agoodexampleofhowanactivityshouldaffectyourschedule,afinishtostartactivitywouldbeappliedtothedrywallasitrelatesto
thepaintingactivity,meaningthepaintingworkwouldonlystartafterthedrywallworkwasdone.Thereareplentyofotherthingstoknowbutunderstandingthe

structureisbutdidn’tgointomuchdetail.WementionedyoushouldthinkofyourWBSasthecategoriesorbucketsactivitieswillfallinto.Essentiallytheyarethemajorscopesofworkyouractivitieswillfallinto.Theseshouldbesetupatthestartoftheprojectandplannedoutinadvance.Workbreakdownshouldbesetupsoit’sbrokenupintomajorgroupsfollowedbyamorerefinedbreakdown.Agoodexampleofthisisasfollows:

haveadurationthatsaysfivedaysmakesurethereisareasonyouhavefivedaysintheschedule.Ascheduleisonlyasgoodastheinformationthatgoesintoit,sohavinginaccurateinformationfeedingtheschedulecanleadtoaninaccuratescheduleandultimatelyprojectproblems.Step6–PeerReviewThelaststepI’mgoingtomakearecommendationontodayis

THEDAYOFCONSTRUCTIONTURNOVER
Onthedayofturnover,ensurethatallofyourconsultantwalkthroughshavebeencompleted,thatyourlifesafetysystemsarecommissionedandallofyourfireseperationsarecompleted.Exitsneedtobeinconformancewiththebuildingcode.Constructionturnovershouldneverbeasurprise,regularwalks
