Melody Sim-mons had decided toadopt a dog. Not just anydog, but a French Bull-dog, preferably brindlecolored. The Miami, Fla.,woman began searchingonline. About 100French bulldogs arelisted on Petfinder at anyone time, so the oddsseemed slim of findingone in her area.
Meanwhile adrama was playing outfor a French bulldog mixand her two full-grownpups. Their owner haddied, and they had beenpractically forgotten in adusty yard in SouthFlorida. They swelteredin the heat for a monthbefore coming to some-one’s attention. By thetime Big and Small Paws
Rescue, Plantation, Fla.,took them in, they wereunderweight and heart-worm positive. Theywere placed in foster
homes and treated for
heartworms. Once a vetgave them a clean bill ofhealth, they were listedon Petfinder -- just whenSimmons was in the
midst of hersearch.
“Pet f inderled me toMJ in lessthan aweek,” shesays. “Iadmit, Ithought itwould takelonger.”
S h epassed ther e s c u e ’ ssc reen ingand, withthat, “MJ
b e c a m equeen of my apartment,”
she says. “I call her The
Commissioner,” sheadds, “because everyonein my neighborhood justadores her. She greetsthem all and usually ex-pects to be petted. Hergrandparents love her,and she goes aroundkissing babies.”
Unlike mostFrench bulldogs, MJ isalmost silent. “I cancount how many times Ihave heard her bark. She is even a silentsleeper, which is unusualfor Frenchies,” Simmonssays.
She calls her ir-resistibly adorable and is
thankfulfor her every day. “I waslucky enough to find mypet soul mate onPetfinder,” she says. And MJ was luckyenough to find herhuman soul mate. (Herpups found homes, too.)

Let's face it. Formany people, gettingolder has less to do withchasing the almighty dol-lar, and more to do withenjoying special mo-ments with friends andfamily.
Highlighting thispoint is new research byAARP showing thatmany of America's babyboomers are choosing tocelebrate personal mile-stones such as anniver-saries, birthdays or familyreunions by travelingrather than throwing aparty or buying or receiv-ing a piece of jewelry orother item.
"Travel is the
number-one aspirationalactivity for the boomergeneration," says SamiHassanyeh, AARP'schief digital officer,
"We are seeingnot just AARP membersbut also non-memberswho seem to prefer in-vesting in a celebrationvacation for their life'sspecial moments."
Currently, thereare 76 million babyboomers in the U.S., andAARP (travel.aarp.org)aims to help this genera-tion and its family mem-bers plan a vacation, bytaking away some ofwhat can arguably be astressful activity. Travel-ers can now go toAARP's travel website to
find expert advice aboutactivities, places to ex-plore, travel tips and en-tertainment options, aswell as how to stay withinbudget.
