Introducing Microsoft Windows Server 2008

This learning product is designed using Microsoft Windows Server 2008 64-bit with

Hyper-V. Hyper-V is a built-in server role for Windows Server 2008 64-bit that allows a

single computer to act as a host for one or more virtual machines. The virtual machines

use a set of virtual devices that might or might not map to the physical hardware of the

host computer.

The software that is installed onto the virtual machine is unmodified, full-version, retail

software that operates exactly as it does when it is installed onto physical hardware.

The following definitions will help you with the remainder of this document:

Hyper-V: Hyper-V is a server role for the Windows Server 2008 64-bit operating

system that enables users to run a broad range of operating systems simultaneously

on a single physical server. Hyper-V does not ship with this learning product, but it

will install automatically through Windows Updates or can be downloaded from:

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=F3AB3D4B-63C8-

4424-A738-BADED34D24ED.

Host Computer: The physical computer onto which the Windows Server 2008 64-bit

operating system with Hyper-V has been installed.

Host Operating System: The operating system that is running on the physical

computer.

Virtual Machine: The computer that is running inside Hyper-V. In this document,

“Hyper-V” refers to the server role running on the host, while “virtual machine”

refers to the guest operating system and any software that is running inside the

Hyper-V application.

Guest Operating System: The operating system that is running inside the virtual

machine.

By default, the virtual machine will run in a web application in the host computers.

Note: Pressing CTRL+ALT+DELETE while working with a virtual machine will display the Windows Security screen for the host operating system. To close this screen, press ESC. To access the Windows Security screen for a guest operating system, press CTRL+ALT+END. Other than this difference, software on a virtual machine behaves as it would behave on a physical computer.

You can configure virtual machines to communicate with the host computer, other virtual

machines on the same host computer, other host computers, virtual machines on other

host computers, other physical computers on the network, or any combination thereof.

The setup instructions that you will follow as part of this classroom setup guide configure

Virtual Server and the Virtual Machines that run on the host. Changing any of the

configuration settings may render the labs for this learning product unusable.

Setup Overview

The host computers must be set up with Windows Server 2008 64-bit. For the purposes of

this learning product, it is not necessary for the host computers to be able to communicate

with another network. However, allowing them to communicate with each other is

recommended to make setup easier. The setup procedures below assume that the host

computers can communicate with each other for setup purposes. You should note the

administrator’s user name and password for the host computers, and provide this

information to the instructor.

Classroom Requirements

This learning product requires a classroom with a minimum of one computer for the

instructor and one for each student. Before class begins, use the following information

and instructions to install and configure all computers.

Hardware The classroom computers require the following hardware and software configuration.

Hardware Level 6 Intel Virtualization Technology (Intel VT) or AMD Virtualization (AMD-V)

processor

Dual 120 GB hard disks 7200 RM SATA or better*

4 GB RAM expandable to 8GB or higher

DVD drive

Network adapter

Super VGA (SVGA) 17-inch monitor

Microsoft Mouse or compatible pointing device

Sound card with amplified speakers

*Striped

In addition, the instructor computer must be connected to a projection display device that

supports SVGA 800 x 600 pixels, 256 colors.


Software Please note that, unless otherwise indicated, this software is not included in the Trainer

Materials disc. This learning product was developed and tested on supported Microsoft

software, which is required for the classroom computers. Software included in this

section can be sourced from the Microsoft Partner Program via the Partner Program

Action Pack detailed information on which is available at https://partner.microsoft.com.

Required, but not included in the Training Materials, are:

Microsoft Windows Server 2008 64-bit Operating System

System Center Virtual Machine Manager 2008

Microsoft Office PowerPoint® 2003 (This is required for the instructor computer

only)

Classroom Configuration

Each classroom computer will serve as the student’s main point of interaction with the

Hyper-V server. The classroom computers running Windows Server 2008 64-bit Hyper-

V will host multiple Virtual Machines by the end of the course. Due to the physical

server nature of this course, the classroom computer will need to be rebuilt according to

the instructions in this document at the end of each course. Each classroom computer will

be named 6422A-Hyper-V-## with the “##” incrementing for each classroom computer.

Each classroom computer will also be a domain controller for the Contoso##.com domain,

again with the “##” incrementing for each classroom computer.

Note: The virtual machines that are used as part of the Labs in Modules 1, 3, 6 and 7 have not been activated and are all running in the grace period. This grace period will expire and students will therefore need to reset it. During these labs students will need to select “Ask me Later” in the Windows Activation dialogue after boot up of the virtual machine and then run “slmgr- rearm“ from the command line in order to reset the initial grace period. Detailed steps for this are available in the 6422 Error_Log.doc which is available on the MCT Download Center.

Also Note that the Windows Server 2008 software used during the setup of the Instructor and Student machines does not necessarily need to be activated and you may run it in the grace period for the duration of the class.


Classroom Setup Files The module labs for this course require a number of Virtual Hard Drive, Virtual Machine

Configuration, Snapshot, Windows Server 2008 64-bit ISO files, and VMware Virtual

Hard Drive files. These files are provided in the 6422AF_ClassroomSetup.exe self-

extracting executable which must be extracted to the root of the E:\ drive, or if your

machine has no E:\ drive an equivalent location, on the instructor computer and each

student computer. The list of files required for the labs include the following files and

folders:

Module 1 – This folder structure contains the files from the SEA-SQL-01 Virtual

Machine exported from Hyper-V. The files necessary for this module include the

config.xml file which contains the configuration of the Virtual Machine and the SEA-

SQL-01.vhd file which is the Virtual Hard Drive for this server.

Instructor Computer Setup

Use the instructions in the following section to set up the instructor computer. The setup

for the instructor computer starts from a bare box install.


1. Install Windows Server 2008 64-bit In this task, you will install the Windows Server 2008 64-bit operating system.

To install Windows Server 2008 64-bit complete the following steps:

1. Set the computer BIOS clock to 8/22/2008.

2. Insert the Windows Server 2008 64-bit installation media in the DVD drive.

3. Reboot the computer.

4. The Install Windows dialog box appears. Click Next, and then click Install now.

5. On the Select the operating system you want to install page, click Windows

Server 2008 Enterprise (Full Installation), and then click Next.

6. On the Please read the license terms page, select I accept the license terms, and

then click Next.

7. On the Which type of installation do you want page, click Custom.

8. On the Where do you want to install Windows page, click Disk 0, and then click

Next. The installation of Windows Server 2008 64-bit will now complete without

requiring any additional information.

2. Configure Windows Server 2008 64-bit In this task, you will configure Windows Server 2008 64-bit in preparation for the course.

1. On The user’s password must be changed before logging on the first time page,

click OK.

2. In the New password and Confirm password fields, type P@ssw0rd, and then

press ENTER.

3. On the Your password has been changed page, click OK.

4. The Configuration Tasks wizard appears. From this wizard, configure the following

settings:

Set time zone: set to your local time zone.

Computer name: 6422-Hyper-V.

Enable automatic updating and feedback: Yes.

Download and install updates: Install all available updates. (perform the

windows updates before configuring the static IP address on the server allowing

the server to communicate with Windows Update using the local DHCP server).

If you cannot connect to Windows Update, install Windows6.0-KB950050-

x64.msu from the Allfiles\Setup Files folder.

Configure networking:

i. IP address: 192.168.16.254

ii. Subnet mask: 255.255.255.0.

iii. Preferred DNS server: 192.168.16.254

5. Select Do not show this window at logon, and then click Close.

6. The Server Manager window opens. Select Do not show me this console at logon.

7. In the console tree, click Roles.

8. In the details pane, click Add Roles.

9. The Add Roles Wizard appears. Click Next.

10. On the Select Server Roles page, select Active Directory Domain Services, and

then click Next.

11. On the Active Directory Domain Services page, click Next.

12. On the Confirm Installation Selections page, click Install.

13. On the Installation Results page, click Close this wizard and launch the Active

Directory Domain Services Installation Wizard (dcpromo.exe).

14. The Active Directory Domain Services Installation Wizard appears. Click Next.

15. On the Operating System Compatibility page, click Next.

16. On the Choose a Deployment Configuration page, click Create a new domain in a

new forest. Click Next.

17. On the Name the Forest Root Domain page, in the FQDN of the forest root

domain field, type Contoso.com. Click Next.

18. On the Set Forest Functional Level page, in the Forest functional level list, click

Windows Server 2008. Click Next.

19. On the Additional Domain Controller Options page, click Next. (DNS server

should be selected.)

20. If the Static IP assignment dialog box appears, click Yes, the computer will use a

dynamically assigned IP address.

21. The Active Directory Domain Services Installation Wizard dialog box appears.

Click Yes.

22. On the Location for Database, Log Files, and SYSVOL page, click Next.

23. On the Directory Services Restore Mode Administrator Password page, in the

Password and Confirm password fields, type P@ssw0rd. Click Next.


24. On the Summary page, click Next.


Select Reboot on completion.

3. Install Virtual Machine Manager 2008 In this task, you will install System Center Virtual Machine Manager 2008 server,

Administrator Console, and Self-Service Portal.

1. From the System Center Virtual Machine Manager 2008 installation media, double-

click setup.exe.

2. On the Virtual Machine Manager 2008 splash screen, under Setup, click VMM

Server.

3. The Virtual Machine Manager Server Setup wizard appears. Click I accept the

terms of this agreement, and then click Next.

4. On the Microsoft Update page, click Next.

5. On the Customer Experience Improvement Program page, click No, I am not

willing to participate. Click Next.

6. On the Product Registration page, click Next.

7. On the Prerequisites Check page, click Next.

8. On the Installation Location page, click Next.

9. On the SQL Server Settings page, click Install SQL Server 2005 Express Edition

SP2. Click Next.

10. On the Library Share Settings page, click Next.

11. On the Installation Settings page, click Next.

12. On the Summary of Settings page, click Install.

13. On the Installation page, when the installation completes, clear Check for the latest

Virtual Machine Manager updates, and then click Close.


Administrator Console.

15. The Virtual Machine Manager Administrator Console Setup wizard appears.

Click I accept the terms of this agreement, and then click Next.

16. On the Customer Experience Improvement Program page, click Next.



19. On the Port Assignment page, click Next.





22. On the Start menu, click Server Manager.

23. The Server Manager window opens. In the console tree, click Roles | Web Server

(IIS).

24. In the details pane, under Role Services, click Add Role Services.

25. The Add Role Services wizard appears. Under Role Services, select the following

options:

27. When the installation completes, click Close. Close Server Manager.

28. On the Start menu, click Administrative Tools | Internet Information Services

(IIS) Manager.

29. The Internet Information Services (IIS) Manager window opens. In the console tree,

expand 6422-Hyper-V, and then click Sites.

30. In the details pane, right-click Default Web Site, and then click Remove.

31. The Confirm Remove dialog box appears. Click Yes.

32. Close Internet Information Services (IIS) Manager.


Self-Service Portal.

34. The Virtual Machine Manager Self-Service Portal Setup wizard appears. Click I

accept the terms of this agreement. Click Next.




37. On the Web Server Settings page, click Next.




40. On the Virtual Machine Manager 2008 splash screen, click Exit.

41. Using Windows Updates, install all available updates for Windows Server 2008.

4. Install the PowerPoint Slides In this task, you will install the PowerPoint slides for the learning product by running

6422A_ppt.msi.

In the Trainer Materials disc, in the \Setup folder, double-click 6422A_ppt.msi.


Student Computer Checklist

1. Install Windows Server 2008 64-bit.

2. Configure Windows Server 2008 64-bit.

3. Install Virtual Machine Manager 2008.


Student Computer Setup

Use the instructions in the following section to set up the student computers. The setup

for the student computer starts from a bare box install. Before starting this setup, assign

each student computer an incremental two-digit number starting at 01 and continuing

with 02, 03, 04, 05, etc.

1. Install Windows Server 2008 64-bit In this task, you will the Windows Server 2008 64-bit operating system.

To install Windows Server 2008 64-bit complete the following steps:

1. Set the computer BIOS clock to 8/22/2008.

2. Insert the Windows Server 2008 64-bit installation media in the DVD drive.

3. Reboot the computer.

4. The Install Windows dialog box appears. Click Next, and then click Install now.

5. On the Select the operating system you want to install page, click Windows

Server 2008 Enterprise (Full Installation), and then click Next.

6. On the Please read the license terms page, select I accept the license terms, and

then click Next.

7. On the Which type of installation do you want page, click Custom.

8. On the Where do you want to install Windows page, click Disk 0, and then click

Next. The installation of Windows Server 2008 64-bit will now complete without

requiring any additional information.

12. On the Confirm Installation Selections page, click Install.

13. On the Installation Results page, click Close this wizard and launch the Active

Directory Domain Services Installation Wizard (dcpromo.exe).

14. The Active Directory Domain Services Installation Wizard appears. Click Next.

15. On the Operating System Compatibility page, click Next.

16. On the Choose a Deployment Configuration page, click Create a new domain in a

new forest. Click Next.

17. On the Name the Forest Root Domain page, in the FQDN of the forest root

domain field, type Contoso##.com (with ## equaling the computer incrementation).

Click Next.

18. On the Set Forest Functional Level page, in the Forest functional level list, click

Windows Server 2008. Click Next.

3. Install Virtual Machine Manager 2008 In this task, you will install System Center Virtual Machine Manager 2008 server,

Administrator Console, and Self-Service Portal.

1. From the System Center Virtual Machine Manager 2008 installation media, double-

click setup.exe.

3. The Virtual Machine Manager Server Setup wizard appears. Click I accept the

terms of this agreement, and then click Next.

4. On the Microsoft Update page, click Next.

5. On the Customer Experience Improvement Program page, click No, I am not

willing to participate. Click Next.

9. On the SQL Server Settings page, click Install SQL Server 2005 Express Edition

SP2. Click Next.

27. When the installation completes, click Close. Close Server Manager.

28. On the Start menu, click Administrative Tools | Internet Information Services

(IIS) Manager.

29. The Internet Information Services (IIS) Manager window opens. In the console tree,

expand 6422-Hyper-V, and then click Sites.

30. In the details pane, right-click Default Web Site, and then click Remove.

31. The Confirm Remove dialog box appears. Click Yes.


32. Close Internet Information Services (IIS) Manager.


Self-Service Portal.
