(pg 106) WE ARE CONSTANTLY overwhelmed by voices—the voices of parents, of friends, teachers, mentors, coaches, siblings, employers, experts, celebrities, politicians, preachers, advi-sors, consultants. All these voices make it very easy to drown out the quiet voice within. But this voice within is the voice of your authentic self. This is the-best-version-of-yourself talking to you. This is the voice of integrity, the voice of character, the voice of virtue. This is quite possi-bly the only voice in your life that has no agenda other than seeing y ou become perfectly yourself. Identifying a set of core beliefs and developing a personal mission statement are powerful and useful exercises, but it is the voice within more than anything or anyone else that will help you to discover what you believe. Not all at once, though we wish it could be so, but step by step along the way. If you learn to listen to the gentle voice within you, it will grow stronger and stronger, and if you live by what you hear, that voice will grow clearer and clearer with every passing day. . THE CALL TO DISCIPLESHIP The core vocation in the Gospel of Mark is the voca-tion, or call, to discipleship. Today’s Gospel passage provides us with one last example of what the vocation to discipleship means, and one example of what it doesn’t mean. A destitute widow shows us that discipleship means following Jesus’ way of service, even if it requires giving one’s livelihood (or life). The scribes show us by their bad example that discipleship should entail a vocation to extend God’s care to those who are most in need. In our reading from the book of Kings another widow and her son are close to death. They too give what little they have, but they are rewarded by Elijah with food enough for a year. And the reading from the Letter to the Hebrews reminds us that Jesus sacrificed his life “to bring salvation to those who eagerly await him” (Hebrews 9:28). Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.

I relate the following story in honour of the Lord Jesus Christ, Catherine’s Eternal Bride-groom, and in praise of Catherine herself—and to my own confusion. When Catherine talked to me about God and entered into profound discus-sions of the highest mysteries, the conversation often went on for a very long time, and I, not possessing her spirit, and being weighed down by the weight of the flesh, would sometimes drop off to sleep. Catherine was always quite engrossed when she talked about God and she would go on talking away without noticing that I was nodding, but then after a while she would realize that I was asleep and she would wake me up by saying in a loud voice, “My dear man, do you really want to miss things useful to your soul, just for the sake of sleep? LLAMADOS A SER DISCÍPULOS La vocación central en el Evangelio según san Marcos es la vocación, o el llamado de ser discípulos. El pasaje del Evangelio de hoy nos brinda por lo menos un ejemplo de qué significa la vocación de ser discípulo y un ejemplo de lo que no significa. Una viuda pobre nos muestra que ser un buen discípulo significa seguir el camino de servicio de Jesús, incluso si implica entregar todo lo que tenemos para vivir (o incluso nuestra vida). Los letrados nos muestran con su mal ejemplo que ser un buen discípulo implica la vocación de hacer llegar el cuidado de Dios a los más necesitados. En nuestra lectura del libro de los Reyes otra viuda y su hijo corren peligro de morir. Ellos también entregan lo poco que tienen, pero son recompensados por Elías con comida sufi-ciente para un año. Go beyond just saying “no” to teach children about polite exceptions Rules about politeness seem to be in contradiction to the rules we teach children about avoiding predators and responding to behaviors that make them uncomfortable. It’s important to expand on the idea of saying “no” when someone asks them to cross a boundary. Explain that there are situa-tions where being rude is acceptable, if that’s what it takes, and help them understand that being polite has its limits.
