• Cardinal numbers are used to tell time, price, or age; they take no endings. Eins drops the s when followed by und. Sechs and sieben drop the s or en when coupled with

–zehn or –zig. Also note the difference between the English and German words for billion and trillion.

• Dates use cardinal numbers and are read in the following way.

1832: achtzehnhundertzweiunddreißig

• Ordinal numbers are adjectives that designate the order of things. In German, the ordinal numbers are formed by adding –t to the cardinal numbers 4–19 (viert–, fünft–) and adding –st to those from 20 (zwanzigst–) on. Since ordinal numbers are adjectives, the appropriate endings must be added.

Der erste Weihnachtstag ist am 25. Dezember.The first day of Christmas is the 25th of December.

Der zweite Weihnachtstag ist am 26. Dezember.The second day of Christmas is the 26th of December.

• When using numbers and not words, ordinal numbers are indicated by a period after the cardinal number: der 1. Januar for der erste Januar. When naming people, Roman numerals are used: Kaiser Wilhelm II. for Kaiser Wilhelm der Zweite.

• Use cardinal numbers with the appropriate preposition to express time.

Das Restaurant ist um 6 Uhr morgens geöffnet.The restaurant is open at 6 a.m.

Die Kaffeestube macht um Viertel nach 3 auf.The coffee shop opens at a quarter after 3.

Die Feier endet gegen 24 Uhr.The party ends around midnight.

• Official time using a 24-hour clock is used for transportation, events, and official business. The expressions Viertel, halb, vor, or nach are not used with official time.

Der Zug wird um 11 Uhr 45 abfahren.The train will leave at 11:45 a.m.

Das Programm beginnt um 8 Uhr 30.The program will start at 8:30 p.m.

• Ordinal numbers are used to talk about dates and birthdates.

Heute ist der erste Mai.Today is the first of May.

Ich habe am siebzehnten März Geburtstag.My birthday is on the 17th of March.
