6.3 Implementing & Enforcing Laws
Regulatory Commissions Commissions established by the
government to oversee certain areas. Federal Trade Commission (FTC)
-ensures costumer protection-makes sure companies do not give out false information or engage in false advertising-makes sure that businesses do not violate laws against monopolies
Regulatory Commissions (cont.) Federal Communications Commissions (FCC)
-enforces federal regulations that regard modes of communication-regulates all interstate and international telecommunications
Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC)-make sure that companies do not pose an unreasonable risk of injury to the public from consumer products
Independent Agencies Established by legislative statute and outside the
departments of the executive branch of federal or state government
Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)-makes sure that laws regulating pollution, the use of certain chemicals/pesticides, and waste disposal are properly adhered to.
National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB)-investigate accidents that involve airplanes and forms of mass transport-investigates hazardous waste spills that involve modes of transportation
Independent Agencies (cont.) Food & Drug Administration (FDA)
-regulate drugs, food, dietary supplements, medical equipment and any other products that could impact the heath of citizens
Federal Aviation Administration (FAA)-oversees U.S. civil air travel and transportation
Central Intelligence Agency (CIA)-gathers information on other nations, insurgent groups, and terrorist organizations.
Law Enforcement Agencies Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI)
-Investigate and solve federal crimes. Department of Justice
-Is responsible for federal law enforcement agencies and the enforcement of many federal laws.
Secret Service-Protects the president and is in charge of counterfeiting crimes.
Law Enforcement Agencies (cont.) State Bureau of Investigations
-Equivalent to FBI-Investigates major state crimes
State Troopers-Responsible for highway patrol
National Guard-Military force for the state-Private citizens who work civilian jobs
