1 Editorial NotesNetManager (NetM) belongs to the network management systems provided by Siemens for operation of telecommunication networks. It is the Siemens product that realizes an operations system (OS) for the operation, administration, and maintenance (OA&M) of Siemens control and access network element (NE), i.e., the EWSD and SURPASS product families.EWSD is the Siemens control digital switching system for telephone networks; SURPASS is the Siemens control, access, and transport product family that implements the transition from circuit-based (designed for voice transmission) to packet-based networks (designed for voice and data transmission), offering a step-by-step entry into the world of next generation networks and smooth migration to an Internet protocol (IP) based network. The network elements (NE) to be managed by NetManager can be NEs under direct control , e.g., SURPASS hiE 9200 and hiS 700, and network element (NE) managed by an element manager (EM) , in case NetManager is used to setup an OS hierarchy. Each element manager (EM) provides services and applications for the operation and maintenance of their managed network elements (NE), e.g., the SURPASS hiX 5300 and hiG 1200.In addition to its basic functionality, NetManager serves as a platform for convenient, optional OA&M applications such as subscriber management and maintenance, call routing, billing, and Centrex management.

1.1 Target group and structure of this manualThis manual is intended for NetManager (NetM) and Windows administrators, and dis-cusses: the tasks to be performed after the installation is finished and before any user can

begin using NE the tasks to be performed in NetManager applications which require administrator

rightsSee chapter 2 (Overview of administration tasks) for an introduction to the NetMan-ager administration tasks.A knowledge of the User Manual is a prerequisite for the administrator.

1.2 Restrictionsg Observe the following restrictions valid for this manual: The information contained in the NetManager manuals is only valid for the NetMan-

ager product in the version this manual is released for. The information on the actual product version is included on the binder and the accessory package (supplied with the printed documentation) and on the CD-ROM cover (supplied with the electronic documentation).

The NetManager manuals provide information about the complete functionality of the product. Some features not necessarily available in every NetManager configuration have their own manuals: Backup, Restore and Archiving Manual

is intended for OS administrators. It describes the backup, restore and archiving pro-cesses performed by the Legato NetWorker software. Using an autochanger, Legato NetWorker enables automatic, scheduled backups of all computers that are configured for this purpose, and if necessary, a complete point-in-time recovery of all lost data. It also provides functionality to archive data in external long-term storage for later online retrieval and offline post-processing purposes.

Foreign OS Administration Manualis intended for those who install the foreign operations system (OS) software in the local that is, NetManager OS, who administer the OS gateway in the local OS, and for developers who program applications for a foreign host that will commu-nicate with the network elements (NE) through the local OS.

SNMP Agent Alarm Interface Manualis intended for the developers who program applications for a remote umbrella alarm surveillance system that receives alarms in X.733 compliant format via an SNMP agent located in the local operations system (OS).

SNMP North Bound Interface Manual is intended for the developers who program applications for a remote umbrella alarm surveillance system that receives alarms in TMF814 compliant format via an SNMP agent located in the local operations system (OS).

Command Line Interface Manualis intended for those who use the command line interface (CLI) for task execution in command mode apart from the Workbench graphical user interface (GUI). The CLI functionality can be used as pure command line interface or as CLI Web Client graphical user interface (GUI). The CLI functionality is optional and needs to be acti-vated by Siemens service personnel.

CORBA Northbound Interface Manualis intended for users of an external, i.e., non-NetManager, operations system (OS) that receive alarms from and interact with the NetManager OS through the common open request broker architecture (CORBA) Northbound Interface provided by NetManager.

Centralized NE Backup & Restore Manualis written for those who install, administer and operate the centralized backup & restore (CBR) software. CBR is used to backup and restore the coordination proces-sor (CP) and main processor (MP) databases via a BCT boot or NetM boot (SiM) computer to the central repository server (CRS) located within a NetManager oper-ations system (OS). In addition, for emergency cases, the accounting data (AMA, automatic message accounting) can be transferred to the CRS by using the FastFile software.

Base and Application Security Manualis intended to document the measures taken for securing NetM OS, security at inter-face with other management systems and security of DCN. A mapping is provided with ITU-T security standards. It shall help in understanding the security concepts and provide all necessary information to deploy and maintain a secure system.

1.3.4 Element manager documentationAccess network elements (NE) and certain control NEs, are integrated into the opera-tions system (OS) hierarchy via element managers (EM). For each of these element managers (EM) extra documentation will be provided. The element managers are documented by: The operating manuals, which are intended for those involved in the configuration

and supervision of the network elements (NE) managed by an element manager (EM). They contain step-by-step instructions on performing the various configuration and supervision tasks.

The administration manuals, which are intended for those responsible for ensuring the smooth operation of the network element (NE) components. They describe the security mechanism available and explains their use, e.g., data backup and restore.

The installation manuals, which are aimed at those responsible for installing the software of the network elements (NE). They contain detailed instructions on how to install the individual components.

1.3.5 Network element documentationNetManager supports the operation of EWSD and SURPASS network elements (NE). The NE-specific documentation is provided for a specific NE product in a specific version and language, e.g., EWSD V17 German or SURPASS hiE 9200 S3 English. The documentation of network elements (NE) under direct control is designed for the task database package (TP) assigned to operate this NE. It provides an overview of the features, and manuals explaining the operation and if necessary the administra-tion and maintenance using, e.g., MML-based, tasks.

1.4 Conventions used in this manualThe following conventions are used in this manual.

Graphical user interface textText in the graphical user interface (window titles, button descriptions, etc.) is placed inside quotation marks.

Graphical user interface text example:Click the AMD menu, and then click New View.

CommandsCommands, e.g., for MML, screen output, file names and paths are represented by a special font.

Command examples:The name used for the destination processor (PRONAM parameter) must also be used in the communication database. You can only import task files that are stored in the global task file directory (%NetM-BaseDir%\Databases\GlobalTaskFiles) or one of its subdirectories.VariablesPlace holders for real names and values are represented in italics and angle brackets.

Variable example:The naming convention for the log files is _.txt, where is the name of the communication server (CS) receiving the messages and is the name of the network element (NE) sending the messages.NotesNotes provide useful information about specific situations that require your attention. Notes are represented in the text by information symbols.Note example:

g The combination of IP address, port number, T-, S-, and P-selector values must be unambiguous for a communication server.

WarningsWarnings give you important information which must be followed in order to avoid damage (e.g., data loss). Warnings are represented in the text by warning symbols.Warning example:

!Perform the installation as described in this manual. Failure to do so could cause a malfunction. If you do not follow the instructions in this manual, you are responsible for any such mal-function.

Administration Manual Overview of administration tasks

    Id:0900d80580195843

2 Overview of administration tasksRefer to the System Description for important background information on the following issues you need to know, to perform your administration task: Hardware architecture

NetManager can be configured as a client/server configuration, single server (SiS) configuration, or single machine (SiM) configuration. The decision about the type of operations system (OS) configuration is made during installation. However, the client/ server configuration can be changed during runtime by adding and deleting communication servers (CS) and client terminals (see the overview of installation procedures in the Installation Manual for details).

Element manager and network element typesSee the System Description for an overview of the element managers (EM) (with their network elements (NE) managed by an EM) and network elements under direct control supported by NetManager.

Security managementSee the System Description section on security concepts for further information on how administrative rights with respect to the Windows operating system and Net-Manager are granted during installation.

This manual gives the administrator an overview of the administrative tasks to be per-formed after the installation is finished and before users can begin NE operation.g It is strongly recommended not to run the NetManager graphical applications on the

file server (FS) (this applies also if the file server is configured as a high availability server) or on the CS (if it is not explicitly mentioned). Instead, use the designated client terminals (CT) to log on and start NetManager graphical applications.

2.1 General overview1. Managing the communication database with NE Administration (chapter 4)

This chapter tells you how to administer the CSs in the OS and the destinations to be connected to the OS, i.e., the network elements.Refer also to section 2.2 for a detailed description of the tasks necessary for setting up the different NE types by using different NetManager applications.

    2. Managing SNMP nodes with Basic Configuration and System Setup (chapter 5)This chapter describes how to create and administer SNMP nodes belonging to a network element under direct control.

    3. Setting up the network element database (chapter 6)In addition to configuring the communication database, as described in chapter 4, this chapter tells you what to do on the other side of the connection, i.e., how to set up the database of a coordination processor (CP) and a main processor (MP).g Most of the parameters needed to specify the transport system address depend

on the parameters administered in the operations system (OS). To establish the connection, both the partner systems and the applications must be created and administered on both sides: NE and OS.Make sure that the address parameters specified for all partner systems match.

    4. Configuring fault management (chapter 7)This chapter describes all the steps necessary in order to bring the alarming infra-structure into operation, e.g., how to administer the alarm data service (ADS).

    5. Managing users and user groups (chapter 8)This chapter describes the user administration within NetManager. You start user administration by means of the Windows operating system, and continue with NetM Administration.

    6. Administering documentation sets with Doc Set Administration (chapter 9)This chapter describes how to assign a documentation set to a task database package (TP) as prerequisite for using the interactive features of Interactive Document Browser (IDB).

    7. Administering file transfer (chapter 12)This chapter describes how to create and activate a file transfer access control (FTAC) profile with openFT. In most cases, this administrative task is necessary to enable Workbench users to execute a CP initiated FTNEA file transfer (supported only for direct X.25 connec-tion, see section 2.2.1) with the TRANS FILE task.

    8. Exporting/importing administration data with ENMCMD (chapter 15)This chapter describes how the ENMCMD command line interface exports/imports administration data in the form of objects to/from a text file in ASCII format.

The following deals with tasks to be performed in NetManager application which require administrator rights: Retrieving log information with Log Viewer (chapter 13)

Log Viewer enables you to view NE sessions and OS log information, provided in the session log table and the OS log table.

Managing software licenses with License Key Administration (chapter 14)License Key Administration manages the license keys necessary to enable the func-tionality of the NetManager base system and the optional OA&M applications. In general, all the license keys ordered by a customer are imported the first time during NetManager installation (refer to the Installation Manual for details).

Deleting the scheduled tasks history of all users using the DelHistory commandYou can use the DelHistory command to delete the history records and the result files of the scheduled tasks. A user can only delete the history of the tasks executed under his/her user ID. Administrators can delete the scheduled task history of all users. For details, see
