Penna Selected as ‘14 Carpe Diem Award Recipient

Since the 1950s, Mercyhurst University in Erie, Pa., has been presenting the Carpe Diem Award each year to the senior who has made the most posi-tive impact on the Mercyhurst community - who has truly “seized the day” as our university motto urges. This year’s award was bestowed on Amber Penna of Eden, NY, an outstanding student who is also pas-sionate about leadership and service. Penna graduated from Mercyhurst May 18 as a sports medicine major, whose record in this de-manding program was so good that she earned early acceptance to the physical therapy doctorate pro-gram at Duke University, one of the most selective programs in the country. She eventually hopes to provide rehabilitation for injured war veterans. Penna was active in many organizations from the moment she arrived on campus, and she capped her Laker career by serving this past year as president of Mercyhurst Student Government. That job came with a seat on the university Board of Trustees, where she acted as the voice of the student body. In particular, she worked with the administration and Board to evaluate our upperclassman housing. Thanks in part to her leadership, the board has de-cided to enhance some of those housing areas this summer. In spite of all these accomplishments, Penna is most admired for her service to others. She and her brother have made several mission trips to Hondu-ras, where they’ve helped provide basic medical care to disadvantaged populations. With Mercyhurst’s chapter of Habitat for Humanity, she traveled south to help build homes, and with Service Learning she visited New Orleans to help with relief after Hur-ricane Katrina. Penna is also a talented musician who sang and played the piano for Mercyhurst Sunday Masses, and stepped into a leadership role this year with the cha-pel music ministry. She has also sung The National Anthem before dozens of home athletic contests. She is the daughter of Robert and Michele Penna.

North Collins Boys Varsity Baseball

On Tuesday, May 28, the Boys’ Varsity baseball team won their home quarterfinal playoff game against Sherman by a final score of 4-1. David Lynch was stellar on the mound for the Eagles, pitching a complete game, surrendering only 4 hits while strik-ing out 12 batters along the way. Chris Pulinski tied up the game in the bottom of the first with a solo home run and David Fera added a RBI in the 6th inning. The Eagles only mustered the one hit but managed to score 3 other runs drawing walks, steal-ing bases, and a throwing error by Sherman.

Tractor Day 2014 The morning drive to school was a little different for 16 students at North Collins Jr.-Sr. High School on Friday, May 23. Instead of riding the bus or arriv-ing in a car, the students rode a tractor to school. The morning started out early with the tractors gather-ing at the Langford Fire Hall before 6:00 a.m. From there, a police escort guided them down Langford Road to Three Star Restaurant where they enjoyed a hearty breakfast. Shortly after 7:00 a.m., they left Three Star and began the parade down Route 62 to the high school. The students participating in this event each year raise money for the North Collins Tractor Day Scholarship.

time away from work and family. Each year our firefighters raise funds through our annual fund drive and at the annual Corn Festival. This money helps to enhance

services and equipment utilized to provide even better protection to our community. We will remain a no Fee service.

A Very Special and Heartfelt Thank You

to all the people who offered condolences and sympathies to us during the recent passing of our

mother, Angeline Szal. Mom passed on Mother’s Day 2014, and we truly believe she had breakfast with her mother and 9 brothers and sisters that had all passed before her, as she loved Mother’s Day. We would also like to sincerely thank the Eden Emergency Squad, Shawn Bishop of the Eden Police Department, Father Frank Grabowski, the 5 East Nurses and Aids at Mercy Hospital, the Chaplains at Mercy Hospital, Laing Funeral Home, and especially Rick and his staff from Hospice of Buffalo. All of these people and many, many more made Mom’s final days as comfortable and dignified as humanly possible. Without all these people, Mom’s passing would have been much more devastating on us.
