• Managing water for drinking, agriculture, industries,
electricity generation, navigation, preserving ecosystems and
fisheries;
• dealing with flood management; measures of defence from
storm surge; and
• institutions controlling waste water from drainage and
sanitation will be eligible

A WSH should fulfil all the primary criteria and at least one
of the secondary criteria.
The system should have served for over generations but at least a
hundred years,
The system should have been created by bringing together local
community’s wisdom; coordinating community’s efforts; and
developing customs, rules and practices,
The system should have involved various stakeholders, and
The system should have contributed to the socio-economic
development in the region of its operation.

The System recognized as a WSH should fulfil all the primary
criteria and at least one of the following secondary criteria.
The system has an outstanding historical background, or
It has been indispensable for evolving cultural values, generating
socio-economic activities and sustaining bio-diversity, or
It has effectively overcome at least one of the adverse natural hazards
such as droughts, flooding, or social conditions such as water quality
degradation, waterborne diseases or conflicts, or
It has an outstanding universal value being common to humanity.

A system is recognized as “World Water System Heritage” for
inscription in the “Register of WSH”
Presented a Plaque citing its salient features.
The WSH Secretariat would maintain and publish the Register
of WSH on the web pages of WWC and WSH Secretariat.
WSH Secretariat facilitate technical guidance to the
institution through a team of experts for drawing lessons from
the crystals of wisdom.
Hold special sessions at World Water Forums.

Call for Nominations
Nomination process under WSH Program is open ended
National Committee/Committee of ICID, ICOLD, UNESCO-IHP or
Members of WWC and other stakeholders in Water Sector are
eligible
Submit the nominations in the prescribed format.
Requires a ‘letter of support’ from the relevant authority (ies).
Jury
Jury is constituted by IC for WSH from the members of TAC for
WSH.
Jury submits its recommendation to IC for approval.

The total cost between ~ 25,000 USD to 40,000 USD per year.
Processing the applications by the WSH Centre;
Developing material for dissemination of WSH;
Publications based on the lessons learnt;
Providing support to TAC to the WSH; and
Holding consultation meetings; and
ICID will be meeting the expenditure of WSH secretariat ~10,000
USD.
WWC is providing a support of 12,000 USD per year.
Additional resources will have to be raised through extra-
budgetary efforts.

Nominations invited from entities of ICID and various WWC
members such as UNESCO, WWC, ICOLD, IWRA. etc.
Jury for Evaluation of Nominations have been set up with the
approval of IC for WSH, with the following composition:
1. Dr. ir. Maurits W. Ertsen, President, IWHA - Chair
2. Mr. Emmanuel Grenier, ICOLD - Member
3. Dr. Alexander Otte, UNESCO (Withdrawn) - Member
4. Dr. Kazumi Yamaoka, Commissioner, JNCID - Member
5. Dr. Kuang Shangfu, President, IWHR - Member
6. Prof. Semsar Yazdi (Co-opted Specialist) - Member
TORs
• To scrutinize the nominations for having fulfilled the criteria as
laid down in the WSH Scheme;
• To recommend the eligible ‘systems’ to WSH International
Committee for its approval and their inclusion in the register of
WSH; and
• Seek further information, if required, for drawing appropriate
lessons.
