MASTERCLADTM Medium Voltage
Metal-Clad Switch gear with
Type VR Vacuum Circuit Breakers
SQUARED
GROUPE SCHNElDER
The Reliability of a Quality Design
The quality of Square D MASTERCLADTM medium voltage
metal-clad switch gear stems from a design and manufac-
turing process that focuses on long-term switch gear
performance with the highest degree of reliability.
Reliable performance and safety is enhanced by the
rugged construction of MASTERCLAD switch gear. Each
switch gear assembly consists of individually grounded,
compartmentalized steel structures (with -gauge barriers
between vertical sections and major parts of each primary
circuit) to protect operating personnel.
Based on specific customer application needs, Square D
engineers and technicians select the appropriate standard
sections and bus configurations, with the ability to
customize where needed. After the specified circuit breakers,MASTERCLADswitch gearcomponents includeavailable state-of-the-art electronicslike POWERLOGIC
power monitoringand control systems,
digital microproces-sor-based protectiverelays and SY-MAXPLC-based automaticthrowover systems.
instrument and control power transformers, relays, meters
and other components are selected and approved, all are
factory-assembled, wired and tested as a complete
assembly. This testing is performed to insure reliability
by energizing the control circuits and verifying the specified
sequence of operation for each metal-clad switch gear
project along with the ANSI C37.20.2 Production Tests.
2
ApplicationsMASTERCLAD mediumvoltage switch gear is usedin a wide variety of switch-ing, control and protective
applications includingelectric utility generationand distribution systems, industrial plants, commer-cial buildings, hospitals, municipal pumping stations, wastewater treatment
plants, transportationsystems, and pipelinestations. Transformers,
motors, generators, capacitors, distributionlines, and feeder circuitsare protected by thisclass of switch gear .Significantly, most of theMASTERCLAD switch gearspecified for theseapplications is relied uponto provide the criticalmain service entranceprotection and controls.
Standardization
Standardization of thedesign incorporates aseries of basic modularunits, control packages, and instrumentation. Formost switch gear ratings, circuit configurations andfunctions, one basic sizeunit is used. These features
provide applicationflexibility, versatility, efficiency and economy in
minimizing engineeringtime to plan and layoutthe switch gear .

ComprehensiveTest Program
A comprehensive designtesting program has beenperformed by Square Ddevelopment engineers. Theswitch gear and breakersare designed and testedin accordance withallapplicable ANSI StandardsC37.04, C37.06, C37.09 andC37.20.2. The switch gearand breakers meet therequirements of ANSI,IEEE, NEMA, and generallyexceed IEC standards.
Features and Benefits
Long Life/MinimumMaintenance
Reliability is the mainpriority. The VR vacuumcircuit breakers aredesigned for long life. The interrupter's copper-chromium contacts, hermetically sealed for lifein a vacuum, are protectedfrom external atmosphericinfluences. Dust, moisture, and all other possiblecontaminants are sealedout. This state-Qf-the-artvacuum interrupter designis capable of 20-100 fullfault interruptions (varies
by rating).
The high dielectric strengthof the vacuum environmentallows a very short clearingtime during fault interrup-tion to limit the energydissipated into the arc.Total fault clearing time isless than 3 cycles andcontact travel is only 3/8 to1/2 inch, depending on theratings of the circuit breaker .The short stroke producesless mechanical shock tothe operating mechanism.
For evaluation of wear onthe main contacts over thelife of the circuit breaker ,contact erosion indicationis provided on each
interrupter pole assembly.
Together with a totalcommitment to quality, these features provide longlife with high reliability.

Horizontal DrawoutCircuit Breaker
VR vacuum circuit breakersutilize the horizontaldrawout design. Test/disconnected and connectedpositions are provided.
Control PowerTransfonners
Control power transformersrated up to 15 kV A aredrawer mounted and canbe completely withdrawnfrom the front of theswitch gear for ease ofmaintenance. A secondarycircuit breaker mechanicalinterlock is provided andmust be opened beforethe transformer can bewithdrawn for access toprimary fuses.
Racking System

Control
Self-aligning receptacleautomatically engages thecontrol plug when circuitbreaker is racked to theconnected position.
Both opening and closingsprings are automaticallydischarged when circuitbreaker is removed fromthe compartment. Rackingarm operates linkage onbottom of breaker .
All secondary/controlwiring, including terminalblocks, CT shorting blocks, and other devices arelo<:ated in the instrumentcompartment at the frontof each breaker section, isolated from the primaryvoltage areas. Each sectionhas provisions for controlwiring entry from topor bottom.
Breaker Rating Block
Prevents insertion of abreaker with lower rating, either MVA or continuousarnpacity, than thecompartment is designedto accept.
Cell' T.O-C
(Optional) Stationary-mounted switch, 6 or 10
contacts, provideselectrical indication ofthe position of the circuitbreaker in the cell-connected position or
test/disconnected position.
The breaker cell has slottedalignment rails which cap-ture the breaker rail rollerson each side of the breakerto provide assurance ofbreaker alignment with thecell. Note that the rail rollersare side-mounted anddifferent from the wheelson the breaker truck.
Breaker PositionIndicator
The breaker position, either "connected" or"test/disconnected," isshown by the rotation ofa colored indicator wheeldriven by the rackingmechanism and clearlyvisible with the cell frontdoor either open or closed.
(Optional) Stationary-mounted switch, 6 or 10contacts, maintains thesame position as thebreaker-mounted auxiliaryswitch-indicating breakeropen or breaker closed. Prevents removal of circuit
breaker until handle at bot-tom front of circuit breakeris pulled by the operator .
Provisions ~
The safety shutters maybe locked closed bypadlocking (lor 2) or bykey interlock tu preventinstallation of a circuitbreaker when requiredby customer maintenance
procedures.
(Mounted behind shutters)
Bushing type currenttransformers are frontaccessible-located behindthe shutters (shown inopen position*, in photo atleft) and mounted on the
primary insulating bushings.Space will permit one ortwo current transformerson both sides of eachcircuit breaker-up to fourtotal with ANSI standardrelay accuracy class rating;two maximum with higher
relayaccuracies.
