Passage to memorizeLuke 12: 32-34

Sell your possessions and give to the poor. Provide purses for yourselves that will not wear out, a treasure in heaven that will not be exhausted,

where no thief comes near and no moth destroys. Where your treasure is, there your heart will be

also.

Values are: • Uncompromisable• Unbeatable truth• Motivational• Drives behaviour• Restrictive• A person will

pursue what that person loves

• They gave us reasons why we do things

• They place boundaries around behaviour

• Drive actions

Value driven behaviour: Psalm 15

• Leaders who are value driven reap a great benefit from the Lord.

• Their confidence will give them emotional and spiritual stability.

• What values do you see driving your behaviour?

• Integrate Godly values into your professional and personal life.

Leadership Principles from God’s Word: ValuesLeadership Principles from God’s Word: Values

The moral values of the world versus God’s value for his People

• Self-interest• Situational ethics• Situational

conditioning• Shallow• Subjective

• The ten commandments See Exodus 20: 1-17

• Matthew 6: 1-34• People work better

with clearly understood values

Leadership Principles from God’s Word: ValuesLeadership Principles from God’s Word: Values

Read Psalm 119:1-32• Our deepest values

must be to honour and please God.

• Psalm 119: 11. I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you.

What God values in LeadersWhat leaders value:• Risk• Speed, a “get it done”

mentality• Independence, control• Competition, winning

What God values in leaders:

• Dependence on Him• Abiding, listening,

investing time in your relationship with Him

• Trusting Him instead of your plans

• Obedience

What gladdens you?• What gladdens or

satisfies a leader makes a crucial statement of his or her values.

• Godly leaders live by God’s eternal values of truth, beauty, goodness, love and justice, set forth in the Biblical record.

Jonah and his values: Jonah 4:1-11

• Jonah failed to match his values with God’s values.

• Is your personal vision in line with God’s wants?

• You can choose to participate in God’s plan and celebrate his work in the life of your ministry, or you can choose to be like Jonah.

• It is up to you.

Leadership Principles from God’s Word: ValuesLeadership Principles from God’s Word: Values

Leaders who are unaware of their values are very vulnerable

• Would you steal?• Why wouldn’t you

steal?

Leadership Principles from God’s Word: ValuesLeadership Principles from God’s Word: Values

Values talk easy but lives hard• Matthew 22:37. Love

the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your sole and with all your mind.

• That is the prism through which all other values must shine, the filter which all life choices are made and solutions are drawn. Meditate Psalm 103.

Leadership

The inner side of greatness: A

philosophy for leaders by PETER KOESTENBAUM

Leadership Principles from God’s Word: ValuesLeadership Principles from God’s Word: Values

Foundation of leadership•Vision - to think big and new•Reality- to have no illusions•Ethics - to be of service•Courage- to act with sustained initiative

Leadership Principles from God’s Word: ValuesLeadership Principles from God’s Word: Values

Vision

• Thinking big and new about your ministry

• Maintaining a clear image of your distant goals

• Having a sense of destiny• Vertical and horizontal thinking

Leadership Principles from God’s Word: ValuesLeadership Principles from God’s Word: Values

Reality• Being in touch with the real world,

with the facts, with the truth• To be realistic means to think rather

than feel; to be objective, not subjective, rational, not irrational

• Understand, accept and cope with the realities of your specific ministry

• Being in touch with people

Leadership Principles from God’s Word: ValuesLeadership Principles from God’s Word: Values

Ethics• People matter to you• Morality, integrity are really

important to you• Ethics means that you can be and

are interested in seeing the world from another person’s point of view

• To understand the depth of a human being

Leadership Principles from God’s Word: ValuesLeadership Principles from God’s Word: Values

Courage• Willingness to risk (you cannot

live without courage)• Take charge, first of your own life• Act with sustained initiative• To be a self-starter - action-

oriented• Willingness to stand alone

What followers expect from leaders:

• Honesty• Competence• Forward

looking• Inspiring

Seven Values of Servant Leadership(Agapao)

• Humility• Concern for others• Controlled discipline• Seeking what is right and good for the

organisation• Showing mercy in beliefs and actions• Focusing on the purpose of the organisation• Creating and sustaining peace

Leadership Principles from God’s Word: ValuesLeadership Principles from God’s Word: Values

Humility• Understand that followers may know

more about the process and have more insights into what needs to be done

• Only the humble can be teachable• Leaders can have the ‘trappings’ of

leadership as long as they don’t ‘believe’ in the trappings

Leadership Principles from God’s Word: ValuesLeadership Principles from God’s Word: Values

Concern for Others• Provide for the safety, physical, social,

self-esteem, self-actualisation needs of the employee

• This can be done by paying a living wage and intervening with more support when needed– A living wage provides for the daily living

costs for a reasonable life – not poverty and not luxury – but a reasonable life

Leadership Principles from God’s Word: ValuesLeadership Principles from God’s Word: Values

Controlled Discipline

• Think before you act– Never act out of anger – let the anger

subside first, then consider the action• Act in ways that bring improvement –

not retribution– Fear usually suppresses behavior but

does not shape real change

Leadership Principles from God’s Word: ValuesLeadership Principles from God’s Word: Values

Seeking What Is Right and Good for the Organisation

• Leaders lead out of a sense of calling – or ‘vocare’– not out of a sense of self-

aggrandizement or potential rewards– rewards may come – but this is not the

focus of the leader• Leaders seek the greater well-being

of the organisation and all those affected by the organisation

Leadership Principles from God’s Word: ValuesLeadership Principles from God’s Word: Values

Show Mercy

• Mercy seasons justice and considers all the factors

• A follower may deserve punishment as a result of his/her actions, but what is the best action overall– what was the reason for the actions in

the first place?

Leadership Principles from God’s Word: ValuesLeadership Principles from God’s Word: Values

Be Focused on the Purpose of the Organisation• Leaders focus attention on

improving the organisation and all those in it

• Leaders focus on what is good for the organisation and all those affected by it– short-term gain may be ignored for

long-term gain

Leadership Principles from God’s Word: ValuesLeadership Principles from God’s Word: Values

Create and Sustain Peace• Leaders seek to build organisations that

are peaceful• Conflict still occurs but the organisation

values the quick resolution of conflict– when everyone in the organisation is

focused on the improvement of the organisation resolving conflict also looks at the greater good rather than the self-enrichment

Leadership Principles from God’s Word: ValuesLeadership Principles from God’s Word: Values

Servant Leadership

• Servant Leaders– Do what is right for the followers– If the organisation does well – good!– If the organisation does not do well, the

servant leader still serves the followers• How can this work?

Leadership Principles from God’s Word: ValuesLeadership Principles from God’s Word: Values

To summarise: The first task of a servant leader is to define values

something give it9. Stay true to your convictions; don’t

Prayer Focus• I am in the world but I am not

of the world. • God of peace, I ask you to

sanctify me in every way, and may my whole spirit and soul and body kept blameless until that day when our Lord Jesus Christ comes gain.

• God’s love is perfected in me. Amen

Learning, application and commitment: James 1: 22-25

• “Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves.

• Do what it says. • Anyone who listens to the word but does not do

what it says is like a man who looks at his face in the mirror and, after looking at himself, goes away and immediately forgets what he looks like.

• But the man who looks intently into the perfect law that gives freedom, and continues to do this, not forgetting what he has heard, but doing it - he will be blessed in what he does.” (NIV)
