pursue what that person loves

• They gave us reasons why we do things

What God values in leaders:

• Dependence on Him• Abiding, listening,

investing time in your relationship with Him

• Trusting Him instead of your plans

• Obedience



What gladdens you?• What gladdens or

satisfies a leader makes a crucial statement of his or her values.

• Godly leaders live by God’s eternal values of truth, beauty, goodness, love and justice, set forth in the Biblical record.



Jonah and his values: Jonah 4:1-11

• Jonah failed to match his values with God’s values.

• Is your personal vision in line with God’s wants?

• You can choose to participate in God’s plan and celebrate his work in the life of your ministry, or you can choose to be like Jonah.

• It is up to you.



Leaders who are unaware of their values are very vulnerable

Values talk easy but lives hard• Matthew 22:37. Love

the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your sole and with all your mind.

• That is the prism through which all other values must shine, the filter which all life choices are made and solutions are drawn. Meditate Psalm 103.

• Thinking big and new about your ministry

• Maintaining a clear image of your distant goals

than feel; to be objective, not subjective, rational, not irrational

• Understand, accept and cope with the realities of your specific ministry

Ethics• People matter to you• Morality, integrity are really

important to you• Ethics means that you can be and

are interested in seeing the world from another person’s point of view

Courage• Willingness to risk (you cannot

Seven Values of Servant Leadership(Agapao)

• Humility• Concern for others• Controlled discipline• Seeking what is right and good for the

organisation• Showing mercy in beliefs and actions• Focusing on the purpose of the organisation• Creating and sustaining peace



Humility• Understand that followers may know

more about the process and have more insights into what needs to be done

• Only the humble can be teachable• Leaders can have the ‘trappings’ of

leadership as long as they don’t ‘believe’ in the trappings



Concern for Others• Provide for the safety, physical, social,

self-esteem, self-actualisation needs of the employee

• This can be done by paying a living wage and intervening with more support when needed– A living wage provides for the daily living

costs for a reasonable life – not poverty and not luxury – but a reasonable life



Controlled Discipline

• Think before you act– Never act out of anger – let the anger

subside first, then consider the action• Act in ways that bring improvement –

not retribution– Fear usually suppresses behavior but

does not shape real change



Seeking What Is Right and Good for the Organisation

• Leaders lead out of a sense of calling – or ‘vocare’– not out of a sense of self-

aggrandizement or potential rewards– rewards may come – but this is not the

focus of the leader• Leaders seek the greater well-being

of the organisation and all those affected by the organisation



Show Mercy

• Mercy seasons justice and considers all the factors

• A follower may deserve punishment as a result of his/her actions, but what is the best action overall– what was the reason for the actions in

the first place?



Be Focused on the Purpose of the Organisation• Leaders focus attention on

improving the organisation and all those in it

• Leaders focus on what is good for the organisation and all those affected by it– short-term gain may be ignored for

long-term gain



Create and Sustain Peace• Leaders seek to build organisations that

are peaceful• Conflict still occurs but the organisation

values the quick resolution of conflict– when everyone in the organisation is

focused on the improvement of the organisation resolving conflict also looks at the greater good rather than the self-enrichment



Servant Leadership

• Servant Leaders– Do what is right for the followers– If the organisation does well – good!– If the organisation does not do well, the

servant leader still serves the followers• How can this work?



It is up to you. Make the difference wherever you go



To summarise: The first task of a servant leader is to define values

1. Do the right things for the right reasons

2. Pray God’s agenda not your own3. Relationships will make or break you4. Prioritize eternal things, not

temporal5. Don’t sweat the small stuff
