From the Pastor’s Column / Noticias del Párroco

Our parish has always been a place of encounter for people of different cultures.

In the early days of the parish, the French and Native Americans gathered together here, as well as a few Spanish. Through the years, English-speaking Americans of diverse backgrounds also came to St. Charles. Then, in the mid-1800’s, many German immigrants came to the area.

While our neighboring parish, St. Peter, is often thought of as the German parish in the area, many of these German immigrants and their descendants also worshiped here at St. Charles Borromeo. This infl ux of Germans can be seen in many of the names found in the windows and the Stations of the Cross in our church (such as Ohlms, Ehrhard, Schluetter, Fischbach, Pieper, and Rauch). Many of their descendants are still found in our parish today.

One of our values here at St. Charles Borromeo is celebrating the rich history and diversity that our parishioners bring to the parish. This is most visible in our Hispanic community. But we also want to celebrate the legacy of those cultures that helped form our parish’s history. Therefore, on Sept. 28 at the 5 p.m. Mass, we will be having our fi rst ever German Heritage Mass. Don’t worry if you don’t speak German; most of the Mass will be in English. But it will be an opportunity to celebrate the contributions that German immigrants made to our parish.

Want even more German culture? You’re in luck. That weekend is St. Charles Oktoberfest. Our Athletics Association is working one of the beer tents at Oktoberfest. So after 5 p.m. Mass, go down and celebrate with them.

We’re all familiar with the name St. Charles Borromeo, but how much do you actually know about our patron

saint? How would you like to learn more about him by walking in his footsteps?

In Fall 2020, Fr. Dotson will be hosting a Pilgrimage to Italy, including Milan, Assisi, and Rome. We will visit many of the historic religious sites in these cities, including many sites associated with the life and times of St. Charles Borromeo. This will be an amazing opportunity to grow in your faith.

If you are interested, there will be an Interest Meeting on Oct. 15 at 6:30 p.m. in the Café. You do not need to sign up for anything at this time; this meeting is for anyone who thinks they might be interested to come and fi nd out more information.

8 Sept. 14-15, 2019 St. Charles Bor omeo Catholic Church

In chapter 15 of Luke's Gospel, Jesus tells three parables about losing, fi nding,

and rejoicing. The outcasts of society, the taxpayers, and the sinners approach Jesus eager to hear what he has to say. In Luke's Gospel, hearing is a sign of conversion. The Pharisees and scribes, still suspicious of Jesus, complain about him associating with sinners. So he tells them these three parables.

In the parable of The Lost Sheep, the shepherd leaves behind the 99 sheep to search for the one lost sheep. When he fi nds it, the shepherd rejoices, not alone as in Matthew's version, but with friends and neighbors. In the same way, God rejoices more over one sinner who repents—like the outcasts who have come to hear Jesus—than over the 99 righteous like the Pharisees and scribes. The second story, about a poor woman who will not stop searching until she fi nds her lost coin, makes the same point.

Finally we come to what is probably the most memorable parable in the Gospels,

the story we know as The Prodigal Son. Just as in The Lost Sheep and The Lost Coin, this story (found only in Luke) is really about the seeker. The loving father is at the center of this parable. Even though his

son runs off with his father's inheritance and squanders the money, the father waits for him, hoping for his return. Upon his son's return, the father, “full of compassion,” runs out to embrace and forgive him before the son can utter one word of repentance. At this point the rejoicing begins.

The parable does not end there. Rather, it makes one more point about the older son's reaction. This son who never left, just like the Pharisees and scribes who feel they are righteous, refuses to enter his father's house to join in the rejoicing. He has served his father. He has obeyed him. The father's response teaches us that God's care and compassion extend to the righteous and sinner alike. When we are lost, God doesn't wait for our return. He actively seeks us out. And when the lost are found, how could we not celebrate and rejoice?
