MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT

Many of you may have noticed that there is a new name on the cover page of this newsletter. I’d like to extend a warm welcome to Barb Lazowski who has graciously volunteered to become the Editor of the ERAC Newsletter. Also I’d like to send a big thank you to Diane Cook for her work as Editor for the past two years. By the time that you read this article our super soggy summer will be coming to a close, let’s hope that there is still some warm dry weather to come and we can enjoy some of the club activities well into the fall. As September rolls in the summer activities will be winding down and the fall clubs will be thinking about starting up for the new season. With the arrival of fall I’d like to encourage everyone, especially our recent members to consider trying out one or two of the Activity Clubs. For information on all of the clubs check out our website at http://essoannuitants.ca/. There is a lot of good information on the site for all of the Activities. Now to a bit of business, the first meeting of the Executive and Board took place on June 17, 2016 as planned, and the subsidy request and Activity Clubs were the main topics discussed. I am happy to report that the subsidy submission for this year was completed and handed off to Imperial prior to the deadline of July 31, 2016. This year we are anticipating receiving a subsidy of approximately $31,000. I want to take this opportunity to thank all of the volunteers who make this club the success that it is—it only happens through all of your efforts. Here’s hoping to see many of you at different events throughout the fall, especially at A Month Before Christmas at Fort Calgary.

Luise

Our Community Care group membership and contributions continue to grow. We are making a difference in our community, and having fun doing it! Our two new initiatives, ‘Time Together’ and the Lions Club Eyeglasses event, have been very well received. With continued support, we could add a second monthly shift for both events.

Sharing Memories During Time Together Rick and Bev Snyder manage “Time Together”; informal, enlightening discussions with people at seniors residences.

Lions Club—Drying Eyeglasses for Re-Use Ron Kitt’s directed teams at the Lions Eyeglass Recycling Centre have been fully staffed with 25 people helping to make good use of the millions of donated eye glasses.

Calgary Stampede—BMO Kids’ Breakfast Don Schaef’s team of 25 volunteers endured dark clouds and rain to serve pancakes, sausages, juice and smiles at the annual Calgary Stampede BMO Kids’ Breakfast.

Olympic Spirit at the Food Bank Our volunteers have been helping at the Food Bank each month, as well as at the Food Bank’s Garden-of-Eatin’, a valued initiative that risks being discontinued due to a lack of volunteers.

Smiles at the Drop-In Center (note the aprons from the BMO Breakfast)

Jennie Wolter and Pam Allen lead volunteers at the Drop In Centre twice monthly. The 1,100 sandwiches assembled during a recent 90 minute shift were consumed within two days. Aprons from the BMO Breakfast were donated to the Centre.

Preparing for the Shaw Classic During the last week in August, 28 volunteers will marshal spectators over multiple shifts during the five day Shaw Charity Classic. Can the $3.9 million raised for Alberta charities last year be topped? Wish them clear skies and sunshine.

August 26: Community Care members will re-live and celebrate our achievements at our Annual Social

September: Dave Patterson will be leading the group “promoting indigenous species” at

Calgary’s Pearce Estate Park in September. The ERAC web page provides more information and photos of events. Interested in joining us? Contact Peter Baltais at [email protected].

HOTEL AND CAR RENTAL PROGRAM Annuitants are able to take advantage of Imperial Oil’s negotiated pricing for car rentals and hotels.

Imperial Oil has agreements with National Car Rental and several hotel chains that cover rentals in

Canada and the US plus a number of other countries.

If anyone would like to use this program, please contact a member of the ERAC Board of Directors

and that person will provide you with the details of the program. Or login to ERAC’s web site and

click on “For Members”, then on the left, click on “IOL Car & Hotel”.

The Tony® Award Winning musical, MILLION DOLLAR QUARTET is set on December 4, 1956. History was made when an extraordinary twist of fate brought Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis, Carl Perkins and Elvis Presley together at Sun Records in Memphis for what would be one of the greatest impromptu jam sessions ever. It brings to light the extraordinary story of broken promises, secrets, betrayal, and the once-in-a-lifetime celebration of four friends that is altogether poignant, heartwarming and funny. MILLION DOLLAR QUARTET brings that legendary night to life, featuring a score of rock hits.

Sleeves of golf balls were given out to Maureen Andrews for ladies’ low gross, Bob Miller for men’s low gross and Colin McNeil for getting 2 birdies. On July 16th we golfed at the Nanton Golf Club with 30 people attending. Tim Horton $25 gift card draw prizes were won by Howard Gallimore, Ivan Ericksen and Jussi Alto. If you are not on my golf e-mail distribution list and want to receive information about each golf event

as it comes up, please e-mail me at [email protected] with your request.

To those interested in trying curling or just need a tune up, we will attempt to get ice time allocated for some instructional lessons both for the “slide” delivery and for the “stick” delivery. Please contact Dennis Heacock to indicate your interest in a training session. To those of you that feel they can’t commit to a team, but would like to curl as a spare please contact John Maguire at [email protected] and indicate your preferred position to play. We are always looking for additional spares regardless of skill level. John will provide sparing details at a later date.

HIKING CLUB Sue Deyell—(403) 851-0443 or [email protected]

It's hard to believe but we are getting close to the end of our regular hiking season. We've had some really fantastic and fun hikes. The average number of hikers per week has been just under 70. We still have scheduled hikes until the end of September plus there is a group of 30 hikers who will be off touring Newfoundland. Our final regular meeting will be our AGM and windup BBQ and hike at Ware Creek on September 27. After the official windup of our hiking season those who are interested will continue Thursday hikes with carpools until snow falls and the ERAC Cross Country Skiing and Snowshoe Club takes over the Thursday activities.

GARDEN CLUB Janice Hawkings—(403) 278-8059 or Gloria Fleck—(403) 251-4214

Our Garden Club members extend a sincere thank you to Joan Myer for hosting our July 20th meeting. It was a delightful afternoon. Joan gave us a tour of her beautiful gardens and it was pure pleasure to see blossoms that hadn’t been pock marked by hail. Our next garden showing will be on August 17 at Michelle Zipfel’s home. Unfortunately, this newsletter will not be published before the event. In September we will hold our annual plant exchange. Negotiations are in the works to do this again at Christ Church Elbow Park. Invitations will be sent out later this month.

PLEASE NOTE: We have been thinking about how we might share gardening information amongst our group so let’s have a “Show, Tell, and Question Time” at our future gatherings. If you have a plant you are particularly pleased about, or one that you think is not that well known, take a picture and tell us about it. If you have learned something new, there will probably be others that likewise need that information. Do you have a question for other gardeners? Together we are probably experts, so let’s share.

The photo club has been enjoying the summer, and honing our skills. Janice and Tim Hawkings hosted a flower shoot at their garden in late June which complemented the wildflower shoot done earlier in June. Many thanks to Janice and Tim for their hospitality.

Summer club meetings have focused on understanding composition and the mysteries of many of the camera modes available on modern digital cameras. In the fall the club will be working on improving our portrait skills, including a hands-on outdoor portrait session, taking evening and night photos and on the use of flash photography in time for Christmas. Upcoming topics are listed in the Activities page of the website. If you have an interest in photography, whether you are a beginner or an experienced photographer willing to share your expertise, the Club provides a supportive environment to share your work and grow your skills.

Bridge is a game of skill and occasionally just good old luck! The Esso Bridge Club meets on Thursdays from 9:45 am to 2:30 pm at the Garrison Curling Club – 2288 47 Ave SW, just east off Crowchild Trail and 50 Ave. S. W. If you are interested in Bridge and would like to belong to a small, friendly but knowledgeable group, then join us on Thursday, September 29 at 9:30 a.m.. There are 29 weekly sessions planned for the coming year. Two weeks of social bridge alternate with one week of duplicate. Registration is $5 for annuitants and a weekly fee of $15 covers hall rental and a light lunch including tea and coffee. Regular guests pay $40 registration. In 2015 we had a Christmas luncheon and a wind up luncheon.

BRIDGE CLUB Rosemary Kry - (403) 259-2951 or [email protected]

Has it been a while since you’ve played bridge but would like to start again? We are tentatively offering 10 weeks of classes – from 2:30 – 3:30 pm from Oct. 6 to Dec. 8. Cost for the classes would be registration ($5) and $30 for the weekly hall rental for the hour - total $35. Linda Boyer and Maureen McClure have offered to help instruct. We would need 5 – 6 interested people to run this program. In addition, when you feel confident, you may also join the club from 10 – 2:00/ 2:15 (additional cost of $15 to cover hall rental and lunch). Please contact Rosemary Kry. Have you never played bridge but would like to learn? The Kerby Centre offers beginners’ group lessons. As you gain confidence and skill, you are welcome to join the Esso Annuitants Club. Bridge is a great way to keep your brain active! Hope to see you at the Garrison Curling Club! As in prior years, after our seat purchase, the theatre was essentially sold out for the performances. Cineplex gave us the same group price as last year, $23.80 - quite nice compared to the admission price at the theatre of $28 for a single walk up ticket. The extra cost of the ticket above what you have paid me will be covered by the ERAC subsidy for our group with the rest of it going to getting coffee and Timbits for our pre opera meetings in the Party Room at Chinook Theatre on the day of the Opera. That’s when the tickets get distributed. There is an “alternates” list since this is the fourth year for the club. If someone who has paid can’t make it to the opera scheduled, please let me know and I will contact people on the “alternates” list for the chance to join us upon paying their $23 which will get refunded to those who had to miss the opera. This procedure worked pretty well last year and we had a very minimum number of unused seats. Please contact me if you are interested in being on the “alternates” list for a last minute chance to attend the opera. The Met Opera Club now has its own web page on our website where you can see information about the club! More about the entire upcoming Met Opera in HD season can be found at the following website. http://www.metopera.org/metopera/liveinhd/live-in-hd-2016-17-season

We have 29 seats for the performance of Don Giovanni on Oct 22, 2016 and 25 for La Traviata on March 11, 2017. Thank you to all of you who sent me your $23 so I knew how many seats to get.

The Executive of the Wine Appreciation Club are continuing to enjoy their well - earned summer break. But this does not mean that they are not thinking about and planning for an exciting 2016/17 season. The first event of our 6 event season, will be held at the Lakeview Community Hall on October 4, 2016. The theme of the meeting is Classic Wine Varietals, to be presented by our guest sommelier, Marion Tsaprailis.

Advance Information for 2016-2017 Travelogue Season I want to provide all members with some advance information about the travelogues planned for the 2016-2017 season so you can save the dates in your schedules. It will be an exciting series with new and exotic areas as well as some new presenters. As regular travelogue attendees know, the presentations are on the second Wednesdays of November, January and March, so for the upcoming season we have planned:

Wednesday, November 9, 2016 – Bill Evans will present “Timeless Travel Destinations – A Celebration of Unpublished Blogs”.

This presentation features not one destination but several of Bill and Marg’s favourites - from a

safari in Kenya, to the Aransas Game Reserve in Texas, from the West Coast Trail on Vancouver Island to the Markets and Deserts of Morocco, and from visiting the Tarahumara Indians in the Barrancas del Cobre in the Sierre Madres of Mexico to a photo safari in Yellowstone in winter to name a few of their timeless adventures waiting to be shared. Bill has given many excellent presentations and I’m sure this will be no different.

Wednesday, January 11, 2017 – Bob Dixon will provide photos and commentary on his and Rose’s

trip to India. This is a destination we have not seen recently, at least not in the 5+ years I have been attending, so I’m especially looking forward to this.

Wednesday, March 8, 2017 – Dave Varga will present two bicycle trips he took: Philadelphia to

Washington DC, and a more adventuresome trip that took him the length of England! Dave is an avid cyclist and will no doubt spur some of us on to follow his tracks.

We will be using the new, website-based invitation system and all ERAC members who have attended a travelogue in the past several years will automatically be included on the invitation list. If you are a new member, or have not attended a travelogue previously, but would like to be added to the invitation list, please send an email to Richard Sawka at: [email protected] and I will add you to the list.

See you in November!

The website first went live in April of this year and had 373 different users logged on in the last two months of the last club year. So far this club year there have been 288 different users logged on. Club coordinators are really using the site effectively suggesting that so far we have a success story with the website. Thanks to Derek McLure and Mel Pollock for their efforts to develop and keep improving the website.

My tip for this newsletter is about membership within an activity group. Coordinators have to identify who is a member of the activity group. When someone joins a group, that coordinator has to add the name to the club member list or guest list. The design of the website for clubs is such that if someone wants to join an activity group, they really need to contact the coordinator of that group to get on the list. My advice to activity coordinators is not worry very much about removing members who stop being active. The power to remove a member from an activity group is in that member’s own hands.

Emails addressed to [email protected] will reach me as a contact point if you run into any problems trying to use the website. You can also try to get me by phone. I also will help any of you who don’t have a computer, but need to contact someone with the club for any activity or other problem. Get in touch with me at 403-259-2951.

There is an unchecked box opposite each of these and if you check that box and then click on the “Remove Me” button, you are removed from the club list and the only way to get back on is have the coordinator of that club put you back on. Your participation in any activity is not erased from the database, but you won’t get notices from the activity group once you remove yourself.

When you sign on, chose “My Clubs” on the left hand menu list and you get a page that lists the clubs of which you are a member.
