Fall Graduation
Fall 2015 Sul Ross graduates, along with their families and friends, were treated to a musical performance by their commencement speaker, Rob Roy Parnell, at their December 12 graduation ceremonies in the Pete P. Gallegos Center. An accomplished architect/musician, Parnell serves as Associate Vice Chancellor for Facilities for the Texas State University System. “There will never be a boundary on imagination,” Parnell said. “Your edication at Sul Ross has helped you hone your creative processes. Put your imagination in action and be dedicated to seeing your dreams come true.” He teamed with guitarist Scott Unzicker to play harmonica and sing three blues selections at the close of his speech. A total of 137 Sul Ross students received their degrees at the fall ceremony in Alpine.PHOTOS BY STEVE LANG & CHERYL ZINSMEYER

‘The Miser’“The Miser,” presented Feb. 25-March 6 in the Studio Theatre, is adapted from a play written by French playwright Molière, and was directed by Gregory M. Schwab, professor of Theatre. Schwab changed the setting of the story to the Hamptons in the 1980’s.
This theatrical production is considered a comedy due to the absurdity of its characters, namely the main character Harpagon. He is a greedy man who takes great care of his fortune. Harpagon is a widower who has a daughter named Elise and a son named Clint. Due to his greed, he decides to marry his daughter off to an older wealthy man. The problem is that Elise is in love with someone else.
Harpagon himself is trying to marry a beautiful young woman, Mariane, but he does not know that she and his son Clint are in love. Meanwhile, Clint is trying to get a loan to help Mariane and her mother who is ill. The plot is fast-paced and ends with a satisfying conclusion.

Bongo BallSully Productions pulled out all the stops Jan. 28 when the organization hosted Bongo Ball and Battle Ball for Sul Ross students. Participants resembled hamsters in clear plastic balls as they tried to keep their balance on the gym floor. Lots of punching, bouncing and rolling went on that day in the Graves-Pierce Gym as students were able to release any pent-up frustrations they had with some healthy and fun competition.

Spring Carnival
An annual event put on by Sul Ross students, the Spring Carnival is, in effect, a joyful return to warmer weather. Carnival games are hosted and food, desserts, snacks and cold drinks are sold by campus organizations and groups for fund-raising and fun. Members of the Alpine community always look forward to visiting the campus mall for Spring Carnival.

Spring Graduation
Spring 2016 commencement was held May 14 in the Gallego Center with 161 students receiving degrees. Commencement speaker John Martin “Marty” Davis received the second honorary doctorate degree awarded in Sul Ross history. Davis, who has made significant contributions to the Museum of the Big Bend, was awarded his honorary degree in history. Davis urged graduates to remember three lessons: 1) be receptive of all knowledge; 2) your future is a mixture of the good, the bad and the ugly; and 3) personal character, rather than institutional directives determine ethical conduct.“As Texicans, you are blessed as the legatees of a proud tradition of independence, survival and accomplishment,” he said. “Graduating Texans, go out and contribute to our unique history of blended cultures created by free men and women from around the world.” This commencement ceremony is the last to be held on a Saturday morning. Future fall and spring graduates will walk across the stage for their degrees on the Friday evening following final exams.
