We are all part of God's vine and are rooted in His rich soil. We are nurtured and supported so that we may grow and spread out into the world to love and to serve.

Home Learning Guidelines:

Use the grid below to help structure your child’s home learning. We would encourage children to complete at least 2 activities from each column and record their learning experience in their challenge book. This could be done in a variety of ways. For example, writing a few sentences about what they learnt, drawing a picture, sticking in a photograph, completing a thought bubble etc.

To support your child at home with reading we ask that your child reads at least 4 times a week. Remember there are lots of resources to support reading on our website.

There is no expectation that your child completes the home learning challenges if they are unwell or if circumstances at home are such that the completion of the tasks cause unnecessary stress and anxiety to the household.

The highlighted activities on the learning grid show which activities the children will complete in school.

Read the story below entitled Othello: Ol’Fella by Paul Stewart. You can hear this on BBC School Radio, read by David Gyasi on:https://www.bbc.co.uk/teach/school-radio/english-ks2-shakespeare-retold-ol-fella/z6vmwty

This story is part of the Shakespeare retold stories for children - in this case – Othello.

If you would like to watch a summary of Shakespeare’s story of Othello, please watch the link here:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ocJqxiqfwpQ

Using the document attached compare and contrast the two stories:Othello and Ol’Fella.Summarise your thoughts on the success of this modern retelling for children. What do you think are the central themes of these stories?

Iago/ Jags is a truly evil and manipulative character with absolutely no redeeming features. How did he get this way?

Create a backstory or ‘prequel’ to ‘Ol’ Fella’ telling the story of how Jags became so jealous.

Or you could write a diary entry for Jags telling the development of his evil plot throughout the story.

The characters in the Ol’fella story all use the (fictional) social media site KoolsKool. Jags takes incriminating photos on his mobile phone and he anonymously uploads the photos, using a bogus username to create a fake ‘relationship’ story which results in Mona losing followers on KoolsKool. The repercussions are massive for all concerned – the cyberbully Jags is discovered and punished, Mona and Caspar lose ‘followers’ and ultimately Olly loses his reputation and exposes himself as a ‘LOSER’ on KoolsKool.1. What methods of online communication do you know of?2. What would you do if you were in Mona’s shoes and saw an online post or message that upset you?3. Do we always know who we are speaking with or interacting with online?4. If you wouldn’t say something to someone’s face

Christians believe that we are called to be ourselves… that we all have different gifts, are made differently and are totally unique and God thinks that we are totally awesome.Unique finger print:Did you know that no-one in the world has the same finger print as you? You are TOTALLY unique! If you have paint or ink stamps at home you could make a finger print book mark with the words ‘I’m unique and special’ written on it. As you put your finger prints on your bookmark, reflect about how unique you are. You could say a ‘thank you’ prayer for being you. Or you could draw your own ‘I am unique’ fingerprint and then write lots of information about yourself in different coloured pens (look at the example and template below to help). If you would like to, you could also add a cross to your finger print, as Christians believe that God thinks our uniqueness is amazing!

Discuss the following extracts below (resources 4 & 5) Bengal Tiger and Cannon, what Othello says about himself in the play: “I’m not afraid of anything” • What impression do you think Othello is trying to convey to others? How would he like others to see him? • When Desdemona first sees Othello he is telling Brabantio (her father), Iago and Cassio a number of stories about his past. Read through the script extracts of Othello telling the stories. (Resource 4 & 5) • Discuss: Why does Othello tell these stories? What impression of himself is he trying to give others? Has he been successful? How do you know?

Read resource 6 – Baby:This story, that Othello tells, really affects Desdemona. After hearing it, Desdemona speaking to herself following the story says this:“[Lost in her thoughts] What a moving story. Really affecting. (to Othello) You returned a child to its mother. That’s a beautiful story. (to herself again) That’s the sort of story that would make you fall in love with someone...”• Discuss: What was it about this story that appealed to Desdemona and caused her to respond as she did?Read resource 7:Othello describes how Desdemona fell in love with him as a result of the stories he told her. Try and put the speech into your own words, in contemporary language?

During lockdown lots of rainbows have been displayed in people’s windows because they are a sign of hope. This week we would like you to complete a science experiment to make a rainbow using the instructions below.

In The tempest, when King Alonso and his crew come across the magical feast in the enchanted glade, the weather is good-blue skies and sunshine. However, as the Harpy comes down the weather turns quickly-rain and thunder descend! When there is sunshine and rain you will often be able to see a rainbow.

If you get some good results from the experiment, take a photograph and send it to your teacher.

The play “Othello” and the story “Ol’Fella”, both show characters who experience a range of very strong emotions, and at times these emotions take over. To examine where our emotions come from and how they can lead people to behave in a way that hurts themselves and others around them, we would like you to explore emotions by:• Begin by discussing what an emotion is: How would you define an emotion, and what different examples of emotions can you give? •Come up with as many emotions as you can for different letters of the alphabet. Write these up and add to the list as you develop your work around emotions. You could discuss the way in which emotions are connected; you can see that the strength of the emotion leads to different definitions, for example; surprise, astonishment and

amazement. • Play a game of emotion charades. Choose an emotion and show it physically, using body and facial expressions. The rest of the class/ your family have to guess what the emotion is. When you have guessed try to articulate what you did physically that helped others to guess those emotions. • Can you remember a particular experience you have had that helped you act out the emotion? Were you able to identify what the emotion felt like in your body and can they describe it? For example: fear can give us shivers, goose-bumps, hair standing on end, make us feel sweaty, frozen with fear.Choose any emotion you know enough about and write how it feels to experience that emotion.

Ol’ Fella Comparing and Contrasting with Othello

This retelling is quite different from the original in some ways but the themes are very similar. After the children have listened to the story once give them the following ten point summary of the original Shakespeare play. Read through it together.

1. Othello is a general in the Venetian army and his closest advisor is Iago, who secretly hates Othello but pretends to be a loyal servant.2. Othello returns from war and secretly marries Desdemona.3. Othello is sent to Cyprus to fight the Turkish army, joined by Iago and Othello’s new young lieutenant Cassio.4. Iago is jealous that Othello has promoted Cassio and encourages Cassio to get into a fight with another soldier.5. Othello is furious with Cassio and takes his promotion away from him.6. Iago gets hold of Desdemona’s handkerchief (a gift given to her by Othello) and gives it to Cassio.7. Iago persuades Desdemona to ask Othello to give Cassio his job back.8. Othello sees Cassio with the handkerchief and becomes obsessed with the idea that Desdemona and Cassio are together.9. Othello murders Desdemona in jealousy.10. Iago’s evil plot is discovered just as Desdemona dies. Iago is arrested, but it is too late for Othello, who kills himself, full of shame and grief at

what he has done.

Ask children to listen to the story a second time. Can they match the Shakespeare character to the Ol’ Fella character? Can they identify the similarities and differences in plot and theme between the two stories? (eg Caspar doesn’t get into a fight, but Jags prevents him from getting to training on time and Olly sacks him from the team) etc.
