Conversations 1 Practise telling the time with some of the following ideas:

Use a large cardboard toy clock and change the times (or ask students to doso).

Write up different times on the board and ask students to call out the Spanishequivalent (or ask students to come out to the board and write up the timesthemselves).

In pairs, ask students to suggest times. Partners give the Spanish equivalent.

At certain points in the class, stop the activities for a few seconds and ask thegroup for the time.

Ask students how long it takes to get to towns or cities near where the class isheld. You could extend this activity by asking how long it takes for otheractivities such as getting to work, how long a film or television programmelasts and so on.

Conversations 2 Ask students when their birthdays are. Make a grid on the board of the monthsand keep a tally of which birthdays fall in which month.

Delete the grid and test the students’ memory of when each other’s birthdaysfall.

Ask the students when certain things begin and end: ¿A qué hora empieza laclase? ¿A qué hora termina EastEnders? Encourage the students to asktheir own similar questions either as a whole class or pair activity.

Exercise 4Ask students questions which test their knowledge of the days of the week,such as ¿Cuándo es la clase? ¿Cuál es el primer día de la semana?

Conversations 3 Get students to recreate the telephone dialogue, substituting their own detailsfor Pepe’s. They should give their own area code and telephone number, plusthe international code.

You could get more local bus or train timetables and have students planjourneys and ask for information.

Exercise 1Get students to do this as quickly as possible by giving a time limit of, say, oneminute.

Exercise 2See if students can add to the list with other significant dates in their ownnational or religious calendar.

Exercise 4Once the students have completed this exercise, ask them to repeat it, this timesubstituting information from the timetable on page 34. Students ask eachother about trains to Puertollano or Ciudad Real.

Exercise 5In pairs, students think of a favourite television or radio programme. Studentsask each other appropriate questions about the programme, based on those inthe exercise.

Exercise 6Once this exercise has been completed, ask students to cover up the Spanishwords on the left and to test each other from the English translations.
