Our Mission

• Quickly review procedures following a safety

• Review 6 man mechanics in detail

Page 3: 6 Man Mechanics

3

Procedures Following A Safety

• Team whose goal line is involved puts the ball in play by a free kick from their 20 (unless moved by penalty) 8-5-4.

• Team can use a drop kick, place kick or punt (2-24-6, 2-24-7, 2-24-8). If they use a place kick they can use a tee (2-24-7).

• K can designate the spot along the 20 yard line (4-3-6c)

• Free kick out of bounds restrictions apply.

General Topics

• Source is the 6 man slide show that is linked to the Chapter web site

• We add a Field Judge, who is partnered with the Linesman

• FJ and BJ work sideline in, 15-20 yards deep

• The Line Judge and Back Judge are partners

• Field Judge is the alternate timer

5

Coin Toss

• R and U stand in the middle of the field• Field Judge and Back Judge bring the

teams out

7

Free Kicks

• R same as 5• Linesman and Line Judge are deep• BJ has ball and 25 second count, and

goes downfield officiating inside out• U and FJ have R’s restraining line

9

Short Free Kicks

• Linesman and his partner, FJ, move up, so that Linesman has R and FJ has K

• So we have 4 up: FJ and BJ have K’s restraining line, Linesman and Umpire have R’s

• R and LJ are deep

Scrimmage Downs• Basic concept is that FJ and BJ have priority for

keys• Their keys are the widest receivers, whether

they are on the line of scrimmage or not• L and LJ then take the second and/third

receivers• Concept is that FJ and BJ have goal line and are

able to be with runner/receiver at the goal line• L and LJ have most of the spots—pushing the

FJ/BJ down the field.

14

Motion

• Sometimes motion can mean a switch in keys

• If the motion man is the widest player initially, and then goes in motion, we would switch keys as soon as he is no longer the widest receiver

Motion and Switching Keys

Page 16: 6 Man Mechanics

16

Trips

• SJ or BJ have widest receiver, Linesman/Line Judge have 2nd and 3rd receivers

Goal Line Coverage—15 to 5 Yards In

• FJ and BJ are on the goal line pylons• Suggestion: change this to 20 yards to 5

yards in.• L and LJ have spots down to the 1 yard

line.

Goal Line—15 Yards to 5 Yards In

Page 20: 6 Man Mechanics

20

Goal Line Coverage—5 Yards and Less

• FJ and BJ are midway between the hashmarks and the numbers

• We switch keys: Linesman and Line Judge take the widest receivers

• Linesman and Line Judge have the goal line

22

Scrimmage Kicks

• R is on the foot of the kicker• Suggestion: Linesman/Line Judge switch

who chases and who stays as determined by the position of the Referee

• FJ and BJ have the receiver• Suggestion: BJ have PSK• In this situation, we have reverse

mechanics: BJ/FJ have most of the spots, L and LJ have the goal line
