President’s Message

Wow, what a month! We certainly are living in interesting times.

Speaking of meeting in person, it doesn't seem likely to happen in the near future based on the best information available about large group meetings and the spread of Coronavirus. We have the following things working against us:

1. We meet inside 2. Our meeting space is used by several other large groups 3. We have many members (typically 75 at any one meeting) 4. Our meetings are long 5. Many of our members are in a high risk group 6. We usually have a buffet style meal

So, after our traditional July summer break, we will need to make some changes in order to ensure that our group continues to operate. I will be working with our current and incoming Board and Committee heads to figure out what our new incarnation will look like. And, of course, I welcome input from all members.

FYI, our Webmaster, Stephanie Beardslee, has stepped down and member Sarah Patterson has agreed to take over. Many thanks to Stephanie for her hard work on our behalf!

I hope you were able to join us for the wonderful Facebook demo Liese Chaves did for PPWS on May 20. If you missed it, a YouTube link will be sent to everyone by email when available.

Look for a note from me in a few weeks about a potential June online meeting via Zoom.

Stay safe and be well,

Cathleen

Board Meeting: No Board Meeting was held in May because of the ongoing coronavirus situation.

General Meeting: Cathleen Savage, President, cancelled the May 20, 2020, meeting at the Immanuel Lutheran Church because of the ongoing coronavirus crisis.

JUNE MEETING: The June 17, 2020, meeting is also officially cancelled due to coronavirus. A notice will be posted on the PPWS Facebook pages.

NO MEETING IN JULY Minutes: We will move on the January General Meeting Minutes as published in the February 2020 newsletter at our next conducted meeting.

Treasurer’s Report: John Martin, Treasurer, reports that all accounts are in good standing and all bills have been paid.

Committee Reports

Marketing: Volunteer Needed

Membership: Dues are not payable until January 1, 2021.

Nominating Committee: First of all, Cathleen Savage has decided to continue as President since she thinks it would be difficult to ask anyone to step in when we haven't been meeting in person. She feels lucky that John Martin and Rob Grishow have agreed to continue as Treasurer and Vice President, respectively, for another year as well. Amy Ferguson has agreed to run for Secretary.

Voting will be conducted by mail and email in August. The ballot will be sent by Norah Roscamp to the membership in August and will also be part of the July/August newsletter.

Bylaws Amendment: Cathleen wants to let everyone know that we have received 97, the required two-thirds of members, to cast affirmative votes by electronic ballot to amend the Bylaws to extend the membership period through December 31. Thanks to all of our voting membership for helping to get this passed.

Our amended Bylaws have been uploaded to our website: https://pikespeakwatercolorsociety.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/05/PPWS-Bylaws-AMENDED-5-11-20.pdf. Many thanks to our Secretary, Norah, for her hard work in tracking all the votes and sending out the emails!

International Watermedia 2021: Nancy Neale Martin, Watermedia Chair, reports that we are still moving forward with the behind the scenes preparation for International Watermedia 2021.

I’d like to take this opportunity to thank Joan Judge for all her work on the prospectus that is planned to be launched on October 1. Also I’d like to thank Barb Cribari for volunteering to send out the donation requests for merchandise awards.

If anyone knows of any sponsor who might donate a cash award, we would love for you to consider contacting them with that proposal. We do publish their company name/logo in our catalog as part of their sponsorship of an award.

We are still looking for a CaFE website administrator volunteer. That individual coordinates and inputs our call to artists as well as works with our juror, Álvaro Castagnet, to set him up so that he may jury the entries, make his selections and then generate the accepted and declined notifications that are sent from the

CaFE website. CaFE is great to work with, their website is easy to use, and they have a great support team. If anyone is interested in volunteering to be chairperson of International Watermedia 2023, I’d love the opportunity to work together on IW 2021 to make sure you have all the information you need to carry forward our fabulous biennial exhibition.

Library: Myra wants to let you know that, just because we're not together, doesn't mean you can't use the library. In fact, now's the perfect time with all this extra time on our hands. If you would like to check out, return, exchange, no problem. All you need to do is send me an email ([email protected]) with the item number and title you want, and I'll let you know if it's available.

The library list is under "Files" on our Facebook group page. If you're not on Facebook, I can send it to you by email. Then stop by my house to pick up/return/exchange your items. Masks required, but if you don't have one, I'll give you one. My treat!

New Business: Our webmaster, Stephanie Beardslee, has stepped down and Sarah Patterson has agreed to take over our Website.

Programs: Liese Chaves, of Chaves Gallery in Old Colorado City, was originally scheduled to be our demo artist in March, but that meeting needed to be cancelled due to Coronavirus restrictions. Reveille Kennedy, Program Chair, had arranged with Liese to do a Facebook live demo of an oil painting, "Taking the High Road," for members to watch and ask questions of her on May 20.

Even though the demo was in oil, the lessons learned are applicable to any medium. Liese used a fairly limited palette consisting of Cadmium Red, French Ultramarine Blue, Permanent Alizarin Crimson, White, Cadmium Orange, and Mars Black using a Gray Matters Paper Palette. We do have members who paint in oil as well as watercolor, and they were appreciative of the insights learned.

For those not on Facebook, Liese will provide us with a YouTube link to give everyone the opportunity to view the demo, which will be emailed to everyone when they get it uploaded.

Sherri Moore is a self-taught, award-winning watercolor artist. If you ask her what her passion is, she’ll say without any hesitation, “Painting!” She paints just about every genre and has experience with many mediums, such as oil, acrylic and china painting.

Sherri loves teaching her passion to others who are interested in the intriguing medium of watercolor. One of the things you’ll hear her say when teaching a watercolor class is, “Get the paper wet! Trust me you’re not going to drown.”

Sherri never passes up an opportunity to share the value of art with others. Whether she is teaching watercolor to students, or having fun with her Pints and Pallets at local craft beer breweries, Sherri is always looking for ways to share her love of art.

In the last few years, Sherri has come to realize the value of art in healing. In July of 2019, Sherri visited Salatiga, Indonesia. While there, Sherri met with dozens of women caught in human trafficking. Using art therapy, Sherri was able to show these women that their value was far more than what was defined by the people who had forced them, and kept them, in the unbelievable environment they were trapped in.

Having joined Pikes Peak Watercolor Society in 2015, Sherri became a Signature Member in 2018."Salatiga Surya"
