Meridian Science Department
Vision & Mission:To develop critical thinkers who are able to apply their learning across different contexts through authentic experiential approach to bring out the joy of learning Science in our students.
Motto:Learn Science, Love Science
Meridian Science Department
Our Approach:The department uses the Inquiry-based learning approach to teach Science. This is aligned to MOE’s Primary Science Syllabus (2014) and our school’s vision. Pupils are taken through 5 key stages of learning in the 5E Instructional Model - Engage, Explore, Explain, Elaborate and Evaluate – as they discover and reinforce the learning of Science concepts.
Science Curriculum Framework
Primary Science Curriculum
Aims to nurture the spirit of scientific inquiry and curiosity in our students.
Our goal is to guide them to be passionate learners who enjoyand value Science with our teachers as facilitators, role models and mentors.

Young Meridian Scientist
A scientific explanation should consist of three parts:
Claim: a conclusion to a question or problem
Evidence: scientific data that support the claimReasoning: a justification that links why the evidence supports the claim (using scientific principles/conceptsfor the interpretation)
Use of CER Strategy
Practice 1 (P5/6 Qn)
The diagram below shows a light sensor that comprises a light source that sends alight ray to the light receiver. The receiver then records the amount of lightreceived.
Rani collected 3 water samples from 3 rivers A, B and C. The water samples are thenplaced at position X one at a time between the light source and the light receiver. She recorded the amount of light received in the table below.
Evidence: Water in River B allows the least amt of light to pass through it.
Rani observed the number of fully submerged plants living in rivers A, B and C.Which river do you think will have the LEAST number of fully submerged plants?Explain your answer.
C:
E:
R:
Concept: How does the amt of light affect the number of fully submerged plants?
Concept: Light is one of the factors affecting photosynthesis. The less the light, the slower the rate of photosynthesis.
linking to the question
River B
The water in River B allows the least amount of light to pass through it
thus the plants will have the slowest rate of photosynthesis so there will be
the least number of fully submerged plants.
Raising Interest in Science –
Connecting to Daily Life
• Important to keep the curiosity and sense of wonderment alive
• Find opportunities to talk about Science through magazines, books, videos, articles, daily interactions around them
• Find opportunities to try simple experiments or making models at home
• Keep encouraging your child to think and try to make connections
• Your child will see the relevance and importance of learning Science
• Some resources – YouTube channels, videos, websites
• Keep a Science Journal

PSLE Questions – Example 1
Concept Tested : Conditions suitable for fungal growth – warm, dark and moist
PSLE Questions – Example 2 Concept Tested : Size of shadow can be changed by changing the position of object. The nearer the object is to the light source, the bigger the shadow.
Light source is

PSLE Questions – Example 3
Concept Tested : Evaporation of water. Water from the mist given out of the fan gainsheat from the hotter surroundings andevaporates to form water vapour. As a result, the surroundings become cooler.
PSLE Questions – Example 4Concept Tested : CondensationHot water vapour from the hot fried bananasin box R will touch the cooler lid of the box, lose heat and condense to form waterdroplets. The water droplets will fall on thebananas and and make them wet.
PSLE Questions – Example 5 Concept Tested : Matter takes up space The plastic bottle takes up space in the tank soless water is needed to refill the tank to level L.
PSLE Questions – Example 6Concept Tested : Friction The raised parts provide a rougher surface sothere is more friction for a better grip whenmoving a wheelchair up.
