Meridian Science Department

Our Approach:The department uses the Inquiry-based learning approach to teach Science. This is aligned to MOE’s Primary Science Syllabus (2014) and our school’s vision. Pupils are taken through 5 key stages of learning in the 5E Instructional Model - Engage, Explore, Explain, Elaborate and Evaluate – as they discover and reinforce the learning of Science concepts.

A scientific explanation should consist of three parts:

Claim: a conclusion to a question or problem

Evidence: scientific data that support the claimReasoning: a justification that links why the evidence supports the claim (using scientific principles/conceptsfor the interpretation)

Practice 1 (P5/6 Qn)

The diagram below shows a light sensor that comprises a light source that sends alight ray to the light receiver. The receiver then records the amount of lightreceived.

Rani collected 3 water samples from 3 rivers A, B and C. The water samples are thenplaced at position X one at a time between the light source and the light receiver. She recorded the amount of light received in the table below.

Evidence: Water in River B allows the least amt of light to pass through it.

Page 24: 6 February 2021 Primary 5 and 6 Science Curriculum Sharing

Rani observed the number of fully submerged plants living in rivers A, B and C.Which river do you think will have the LEAST number of fully submerged plants?Explain your answer.

C:

E:

R:

Concept: How does the amt of light affect the number of fully submerged plants?

Concept: Light is one of the factors affecting photosynthesis. The less the light, the slower the rate of photosynthesis.

linking to the question

River B

The water in River B allows the least amount of light to pass through it

thus the plants will have the slowest rate of photosynthesis so there will be

the least number of fully submerged plants.

PSLE Questions – Example 3

Concept Tested : Evaporation of water. Water from the mist given out of the fan gainsheat from the hotter surroundings andevaporates to form water vapour. As a result, the surroundings become cooler.

PSLE Questions – Example 5 Concept Tested : Matter takes up space The plastic bottle takes up space in the tank soless water is needed to refill the tank to level L.

Page 43: 6 February 2021 Primary 5 and 6 Science Curriculum Sharing

PSLE Questions – Example 6Concept Tested : Friction The raised parts provide a rougher surface sothere is more friction for a better grip whenmoving a wheelchair up.
