!Biomass means organic (biological) material, usually wood, other plants, or agricultural waste

that can be burned for fuel or made into biofuels. Biomass is one of the renewable energies

already in use in some Alaskan villages and has much more potential in many areas

surrounded by trees and brush. In many cases just clearing out the area for a healthier forest

and removing fire hazards results in a good amount of biomass material. Although many

villages rely on burning wood in stoves for heating, efficiency can be greatly improved with

improved stoves and improved fuels made from the same wood supplies. Centralized

community efforts can also improve the energy per unit of material gained. For example,

some villages may be able to save money and get more energy out of the same wood being

used already by combining individual efforts at wood gathering and chipping or pelletizing

the wood materials for more efficient burning for heat. Others may plant and harvest rapidly

growing materials for the same goal. Others may be able to supplement and replace costly

diesel fuel by having a very efficient central furnace using chips. The community of Tok,

AK, has a great example of a successful biomass system replacing costly diesel fuel starting at

their school. Smaller brush can be better material than larger trees in some cases where

chipping or pelletizing will be employed. Plants and organic matter suitable for biomass

surround many villages. The challenge is to think about how to improve efficiency to benefit

the whole village.

above. Write your summary on a separate piece of paper.

3. Find an urban location in Alaska that uses a biomass for energy and report on the same

points (a-i) as above. Write your summary on a separate piece of paper.

4. Find biomass energy businesses and funding possibilities in Alaska and make a list

of them to use for future reference.

In the space provided, brainstorm as many words as you can that connect to biomass or biomass energy. Use your imagination. Think of the biomass through the senses: sight, hearing, smell, taste and touch. Or, think of words that describe biomass (adjectives), or what biomass does (verbs). The more words you can list, the better! The words will be used in the 5th activity. $??????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????$???????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????$???????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????

"#$%&$#'(!From the following ideas, choose one scenario to complete by circling it. Suggestions are made for how to represent the information you gather, but you will design your study, determine the conditions, and decide how to represent your findings! !Have your teacher support your choice by signing this page in the space provided. !

1. Correlate the weights and volumes of various biomass materials available in your

local area. Then, compare these.

2. Compute the burn time of several biomass materials (e.g., wood vs. chips vs. pellets).

Graph the comparisons.

3. Test and compare the efficiencies of different models of stoves or furnaces.

4. Measure and compare the different efficiencies of two kinds of wood (e.g., birch and

spruce).

5. Calculate the human hours required to collect wood and the costs associated with

gathering different kinds of biomass (e.g., costs of gas, chainsaw maintenance,

vehicle maintenance, wood chipper or splitter etc.). Report in a chart or bar graph.
