I am a collector and avid reader of fairy tales and there is a wonder-

ful story by Hans Christian Andersen called “The Daisy.” My favorite

quote from it comes from the daisy: “It [the daisy] thought, ‘The sun

shines upon me, and the forest kisses me. How rich I am!’” These little

beauties are my favorite fl owers and what I carried when I married my

husband. Daisies are my preferred fl owers to receive on special occa-

sions. A simple color change and voilà! Conefl owers.

My mother always sang this little ditty: “Mares eat oats and does

eat oats and little lambs eat ivy. A kid’ll eat ivy, too. Wouldn’t you?”

Well, I don’t know what kind of diet she was on, but ivy is not

included in my list of salad greens! Sewn into a quilt, ivy seems to

make the perfect border. I kid you not!
