DESIGN RESIDENCY

SUMMER DLAB

CRITERIA & ELIGIBILITY

PROGRAMME STRUCTURE

WHAT WE COVER

Launched in 2018, the Khazanah Design Residency develops local talents in the areas of architecture, landscape architecture, and urban planning to catalyse change in the way cities are planned, developed, designed and conserved in the future. Under this Residency, Khazanah sponsors two local architects/landscape architects/urban planners every year to take part in selected residencies at reputable institutions. In 2018 and 2019, 4 architects and 2 landscape architects attended Politecnico di Milano’s Open City Summer School programme in Piacenza followed by learning tour in Milan/attachment at ABDR Studio in Rome. For 2021, selected candidates will attend the DLAB programme at the Architectural Association (AA) School of Architecture.

• 3 weeks at AA’s DLAB programme (July - August)

• 8 weeks post residency work for identified public spaces (August - October)

• Return air travel (Economy class)• Programme fee• Accommodation in London• Living allowance• Medical / health insurance

The Architectural Association School of Architecture in London, commonly referred to as the AA, is the oldest independent school of architecture in the UK and one of the most prestigious and competitive in the world. The AA Summer DLAB couples advanced computational design and analysis with large-scale prototyping techniques in order to create innovative, new forms of architecture. It’s a three-week full-time course (including weekends) that takes place in the unique atmosphere at the AA. In the historic buildings of Bedford Square, candidates will use computational methods to carry out design, analysis and fabrication to

investigate correlations between form, material and structure. They will also create custom-made architectural processes, through a mix of conventional and contemporary approaches. The design phase will be followed by a period of physical experimentation and the creation of a 1:1 scale prototype, created using robotic fabrication techniques. The aim is to integrate form-finding, material computation and structural performance to explore the possibilities of cutting edge 21st century architectural methods. In particular, they will focus on exploring how to integrate geometrical, structural and material properties with robotic metal forming.

AR L AM SHEN FEI , 2019 COHORT

“I am grateful to The Khazanah Residency Programme 2019 for the rare opportunity to improve my practice abroad.

Via the summer school and the working attachment, the Residency continued with DBKL collaboration, allowing our

Residency experience to be expressed in the design of a Community Park in Kuala Lumpur.”

AR MUHAMMAD QHAWARIZMI NORHISHAM, 2018 COHORT

“The Khazanah Design Residency was my time of reflection to define my future architectural journey as I refreshed myself through the experience of solemnity of the unorthodox methodology and romantic design

formulation.”

L AR TENG PE YANG, 2018 COHORT

“The Khazanah Residency Programme was an immersive experience that helped crystallise my approach to design and also gave me the rare opportunity to partake in one of the most highly regarded design universities in Europe.”

TESTIMONIALS

“It has been a joy to serve in Khazanah’s selection panel for this prestigious residency program. We look for young people who are driven and dreamers. One’s who when given the opportunity, can take hold of it, build on it and in-turn transform our nation. It is truly a unique learning experience and a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity not to be missed.”
