Attached are activities for the weeks of May 11-15 and May 18-22.

I have included language arts, math, research, as well as creative/critical thinking options. The research option will remain

each week; however, be sure to read for new ideas. The 30 Day Challenge will also remain!

5th Grade EXTEND Optional Learning Activities May 11-22, 2020

The activities on this page are for the week of May 11-15, 2020. Math Solve the following & then be sure to play the Eye Test on another friend or family

member.

Critical/Creative Thinking:

Logic Puzzle: “Drinks and Dessert”- attached _________________________________________________________________________ 30 Day Challenge: Are you keeping a quick list of your accomplishments? It’s so good to watch

your progress. Don’t give up! Thoughts for this week: Do you think a 30-day challenge is an all-or-nothing thing? What do you think makes a challenge successful? Imagine that someone challenges him/herself to walk 100 miles during the 30 days, yet only ends up walking 50? Is that success or failure?

__________________________________________________________________

Les couleurs et les vêtements: For your French practice this week, learn some of the colors and basic clothing items. Be sure to practice at: https://quizlet.com/504158163/francais-les-couleurs-et-les-vetements-flash-cards/ Try the French logic puzzle attached. Send me what you come up with and I’ll be sure to write back.

Research: Since the reading this week deals with secrets, why not learn about some secret of the world? Here are some ideas to help you get started on your quest.

1. Bermuda Triangle 2. Atlantis 3. Area 51 4. Stonehenge

Remember, you can find a TV show, a book or an internet source!

Language arts: Word of the Week: Analogy Take a look at the activity with 15 analogies—attached ___________________________________________________________________________________ Read “Mary Poppins’ Secret”---attached

1. Compare and contrast the two characters using a Venn Diagram. 2. Why did the narrator share this memo with the world? What ideas does

she want to convey?

Challenging Probability:

Have you ever heard of the TV game

show, “Let’s Make a Deal”? (If

interested, check out clips online.)

Part of the show involves selecting

one of three doors to see if you win

the grand prize. If you have access to

a computer, try this simulation for a

number of repetitions, keeping track

of the outcomes as to whether or not

you keep the original choice or switch

doors. http://www.math.ucsd.edu/~crypto/

Monty/monty.html

Or run your own experiment—See

attached.

Then, try to figure out the theoretical

odds of keeping or switching.

5th Grade EXTEND Optional Learning Activities May 11-22, 2020

The activities on this page are for the week of May 18-22, 2020. Math:

Critical/Creative Thinking:

Probability: You invented a new game using two spinners with colors. Your directions say, “One person should get 3 points for a match and the other should get 1 point for a non-match.” Draw what the spinners might look like. Is this a fair game? Why or why not? Try playing your spinner game and see if the outcome matches your prediction. If you have time, try making two completely different spinners, repeat the process and compare your outcomes. ______________________________ Mathemagic: Write down any number besides zero.

1. Add 2. 2. Multiply the sum by 2. 3. Add 2 to the product. 4. Multiply the sum by 2. 5. Divide the product by 2. 6. Subtract 2 from the quotient. 7. Divide the difference by 2. 8. Subtract your original number. 9. Divide the difference by 2.

Is there another number that you can use besides 2 in the above problem?

Logic Puzzle: “I can Add Fractions”-Attached.

___________________________________________________ Les couleurs et les vêtements: Go back and review your vocab from last week. You can always make your own flashcards if you don’t have a lot of time to be on the computer.

https://quizlet.com/504158163/francais-les-couleurs-et-les-vetements-flash-cards/

Put on a fashion show and tell what you’re wearing in French. Learn the correct pronunciation for the expression “I wear…” If you want to include siblings, you can learn the expressions for he’s wearing or she’s wearing. You can always add fun music & record your runway appearance. Not into the fashion show? Try drawing and labeling the items instead. _________________________________________________________

30 Day Challenge: How are things going? Are you ready to start a new

challenge or build onto what you’re already doing? Continue to keep your diary of your progress. Thoughts for this week:

Cutts (from the Mensa video) says that if you want something badly enough, you can do anything for 30 days. Do you agree? What is something you have tried to do but failed? Why do you think you weren’t successful? Could you do it again if you tried and wanted it badly enough?

Research: Are you interested in mythology? Perhaps, you may want to find out more after reading, “The Myth of Athena”. Always, try to dig deep. Do more than just make a list of Gods and Goddesses. Here are some ideas to consider: Comparing Greek and/or Roman Mythology Mythological Legends in Art

Language Arts: Word of the week: Idiom. Be sure to look this up before attempting the attached photo entitled “A figure of Speech”. I actually found thirty-two expressions that I thought could work. Let me know what you come up with and I’ll compare lists and let you know. ____________________________________________________________________ Read “The Myth of Athena”. Attached.

Choose three of the inventions that are credited to Athena. How would life be different if these things didn’t exist? Discuss with a friend or family member or send me an email explaining your thinking.
