5GCity: Developing and deploying a virtualized neutral host
platform for interested parties (e.g. municipalities, ITC -
infrastructure owners, etc.)
to deploy Smart City services.
The EU H2020 5GCity project aims to introduce the novel concept of a neutral host to smart cities, whereby providers (i.e., municipalities) deploy basic infrastructure that then other parties or municipalities themselves, can use or rent out to implement novel use cases at a fraction of the cost and time.
5GCity is busy developing and deploying a virtualized neutral host platform that
will allow interested parties to deploy smart city (virtualized) services much like in
the cloud domain. To cater to the widest possible range of use cases and potential
clients, the platform itself will be deployed in a distributed manner.
It will go from the very edge of a network in street-side cabinets, running resource-
constrained devices, all the way to clusters using standard, off-the-shelf x86
servers. 5GCity targets deployment will take place in three different municipalities:
Barcelona, Bristol and Lucca.

TECHNOLOGY NEWS
• Are 5G Networks, and the Neutral Host model, the
solution to the shrinking Telecom market?
InCITES Consulting has presented the paper "Are 5G Networks, and the Neutral Host
model, the solution to the shrinking Telecom market?" at the 5G – Putting Intelligence
to the Network Edge workshop in Rhodes, last May 25-27. The event is part of the 14th
International Conference on Artificial Intelligence Applications and Innovations5G.
The paper is addressing the 5G networks that will offer advanced functionalities and features;
such as high throughput, low latency, security and reliability by leveraging technological
advances like network virtualization, edge computing, and network slicing. The latter will
facilitate the entrance of new players in the value chain. Moreover, they will offer a means for
network operators to change their business models to address revenue losses. The concept of
a neutral host supported by the H2020 5GCity project seems to be a strong candidate for future
business models helping network operators thrive in the new telecom era.
• 5GCity to Bring the Power of Unikernels to Smart City Deployments · ·
The past and upcoming months have seen a lot of work focused on adding functionality to
Unikraft, and in cleaning up this internal development to m a k e it ready for upstreaming in
5GCity use cases. Highlights of the micro-libraries that will be added soon are ARM support,
support for unit testing, support for high-level languages; such as Python, and support for
multiple types of schedulers, to name a few. The results of this work will be presented at three
separate events: (1) The HPSR Unikraft Hackathon in Bucharest on Sunday, 17-20 June; (2) the
Xen Summit in Jiangning on 20-22 June; (3) EuCNC, taking place in Ljubljana from 18-21 June.
• An innovative OpenFlow implementation for 5GCity
Source: VOSYS
At the 3rd IEEE International Conference on Fog and Mobile Edge Computing (FMEC 2018)
held in Barcelona on April 23-26, 2018, Virtual Open Systems (VOSYS) presented the paper "A
novel pflua-based OpenFlow implementation for VOSYSwitch", unveiling the novel OpenFlow
software implementation of VOSYSwitch. Written in Lua, such OpenFlow implementation takes
advantage of the library pflua and of the LuaJIT just-in-time trace compiler to translate
OpenFlow flows into Lua code via the PCAP Filter language. Therefore, the code executed to
perform the flow matching and actions is generated on demand and tailored to the flow entries
of the forwarding tables of the data plane. Benchmarking activities, whose results are included
in the paper, have been performed to compare this new OpenFlow implementation with the
de-facto standard OpenFlow switch solution OVS-DPDK.
The results show that VOSYSwitch OpenFlow implementation is superior to OVS-DPDK for
environments with simple flow configurations and a low number of entries, typical of Edge
Computing.
Next 13-15 June, Virtual Open Systems (VOSYS) will participate at INTEROP Japan technology
event with a demonstration of VOSYSIoT. Moreover, VOSYS will present an extensive comparison
between OpenStack and OpenVIM together with its paper "Virtualized Infrastructure Managers
for edge computing: survey and performance benchmark” The results of this work set the basis
for the development of the 5GCity EdgeVIM. MORE info
• 5GCity - A distributed cloud and edge platform for 5G-based services deployment ·
Source: Ubiwhere
One of 5GCity showcased demos at EUCnC2018, in Ljubljana, it is from Ubiwhere. Keeping in
mind the novel and innovative neutral host paradigm intrinsic to the project, Ubiwhere demo
will showcase how municipalities and infrastructures owners (neutral hosts) can monetize their
investment in cloud and edge-based resources, by allowing third-parties to make use of this
distributed cloud and edge ecosystem. The demo will focus on the different possible
interactions with the designed and developed web platform, highlighting how different actors
(Infrastructure Owners, Network Operators, Service Providers and Software Developer) can all
benefit from the open access model, or neutral host, to efficiently and cost-effective deploy
innovative services to the end-users. MORE info
COMING EVENTS
5GCity Projects at Multiple Upcoming Events
13-15 June, INTEROP Japan, 5GCity partner Virtual Open Systems (VOSYS) will
participate at one of the most important technology events worldwide, with more than
140.000 attendees expected. The company will give a demonstration of VOSYSIoT,
enabling Edge Gateways empowered by VOSYSmonitor.
From 14-15 June, at the 15th European Digital Forum, 5GCity partners: Comune di Lucca,
RAI, Italtel, Wind Tre, Nextworks, and CoDi will participate at the oldest Broadcast and
Media event in Italy and well recognized at European and international level. During the
Forum, 5GCity demo area will be set to showcase some project use cases, latest results,
and with the participation of delegate at the 5G Media and Industry panel.
Several 5GCity partners will take an active role in different capacities at EuCNC2018,
Ljubljana, Slovenia, 18-21 June, by chairing sessions; holding technical presentations in
workshops, special sessions; and leading demonstrations at the 5GCity booth, to share
latest and most exploitable research results. MORE info

5GCity project is planning to use this SDK concept on top of the city-wide pilots under
deployment in the cities of Barcelona (ES), Bristol (UK) and Lucca (IT). The 5GCity SDK will
be used to design the various network service and experimentation scenarios of the three
groups of 5GCity use cases, which will simultaneously take place in the city pilots sharing
