We hope that you have enjoyed the break from the school routine and are feeling refreshed. We also extend a very warm welcome to Harry and Cooper and their family. Harry is joining 5/6L and Cooper 1/2R. We wish the boys and their family a very happy and rewarding association with St Mary’s community. Our congratulations and best wishes are with Ms Davina Bernau and her husband Niklaus, on their marriage which took place during the holidays. Davina was a beautiful bride and they throughly enjoyed their special day. With Term 4 now beginning, Summer uniform and no hat, no playpolicy is now in place. With the cool weather still around, for the first two weeks of this term, the wearing of Summer uniform will be optional. However, it is important to note that either full, correct Summer uniform or full, correct Winter uniform is to be worn; not a mixture of both: for example, Winter tights with the Summer dress. It is also obvious that many children have had a growth spurt since they last wore their Summer uniforms, so could everyone please check uniforms to ensure that they still fit and let down hems if necessary. We remind everyone that the uniform length for dresses is not above the knee. On Monday, 12 th September, local Catholic primary schools including St Mary’s, St Paul’s Monbulk and St Thomas More’s, Belgrave, gathered after school at the Monbulk Rangers Soccer Club to play for the inaugural Parish Cup. Lord, make me an instrument of your peace.

Where there is hatred, let me sow love;

Where there is injury, pardon;

Where there is doubt, faith;

Where there is despair, hope;

Where there is darkness, light;

And where there is sadness, joy.

Grant that I may not so much seek

to be consoled as to console;

to be understood, as to understand,

to be loved as to love;

for it is in giving that we receive,

it is in pardoning that we are pardoned,

and it is in dying that we are born to eternal life.

Please ensure that all items of uniform are well maintained, including sports

uniform and hats.

Uniforms All St. Mary’s students are required to wear the full correct school uniform. We believe that the wearing of

uniforms promotes the children’s pride in their school and self-discipline. Uniform items can be purchased or made

at little cost. The uniform shop at St. Mary’s carries all uniform items, including school and library bags. There is a

small amount of second hand uniforms available in the shop.

Children are expected to have a school bag with the St Mary’s School logo.

Please ensure that your children bring their correct school bag.

An important note on Uniforms. Whilst it is not compulsory to purchase uniform items only from

our uniform shop, we trust that parents will only purchase items that are of the same as sold in the shop. We

would ask that you continue to support us as we strive to ensure a disciplined atmosphere in our school, by

ensuring that your children do wear the standardised uniform.

Your children may, at times, tell you that it is okay because, “others do it” or “have it”, but this is a good signal

that it is NOT okay!

A note about hair. As we are a primary school, we feel that any change of colour is inappropriate for

children. In the spirit of our practice at St Mary’s, to keep children as children, we ask that you cooperate with

this and leave the hair colouring as something that they can look forward to in their older age. We also

differentiate between “weekend hair” and “school hair”. The use of hair gel, etc., and

styling, is considered to be a “weekend hair” practice. There is also the problem of

styling hair so that it will fall over the child’s eyes or face when they lean forward, e.g.,

long fringes or strands being left out of ties. This then becomes a distraction when they

are writing or reading. If we can all work together on this then not only does it assist

in their learning and give a more disciplined and uniformed approach, but it will also

save you time and money!

The Naplan test results for Grades 3 & 5 are available for collection from

the office on Wednesday. We ask that when reading your children’s results that you

remember that they are based on one test, on one occasion, back in May of this year. We monitor and assess your child’s progress on an ongoing basis to maintain a complete

picture of their strengths and learning needs. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to make a time to speak to the classroom teacher.

Religious Education News

Sunday, 2 Oct 2016: Twenty-seventh Sunday in Ordinary Time - Year C

Faith is not magic, rather it is an inner strength which allows us to do wonderful things.

The message from Jesus is seen clearly in his daily life. He has shown us how to serve others by helping them.

Being a member of the church is like becoming a member of God's team. We all get a chance to play, take turns, and improve and learn from our efforts.

The Holy Spirit helps us by strengthening our awareness of our faith and our call to serve others.

Lk 17:5-10

A reading from the holy Gospel according to Luke.

The apostles said to the Lord, ‘Increase our faith.’ The Lord replied, ‘Were your faith the size of a mustard seed

you could say to this mulberry tree, “Be uprooted and planted in the sea”, and it would obey you.

‘Which of you, with a servant ploughing or minding sheep, would say to him when he returned from the fields,

“Come and have your meal immediately”? Would he not be more likely to say, “Get my supper laid; make

yourself tidy and wait on me while I eat and drink. You can eat and drink yourself afterwards”? Must he be

grateful to the servant for doing what he was told? So with you: when you have done all you have been told to do,

say, “We are merely servants: we have done no more than our duty.”’

FIELD DAY HELP NEEDED

Each year the St Mary’s P&F Committee runs a food tent at the Wandin-Silvan Field Days. The Field Days are an opportunity for Horticultural, Agricultural and Farm Machinery producers/exhibitors to showcase their products and services to the local community. This year the event will be held on Friday 14th October (No tuckshop this day) and Saturday 15th October. We are looking for volunteers to help us run our food tent. You might be taking food/drink orders, flipping burgers on the BBQ or making up orders. We’ll train you up and only put you somewhere you feel comfortable. It’s a fun day out for the volunteers and a great way to meet some other parents from the school. You also get free entry into the event, instead of the usual $12! We also need help loading and unloading our equipment at the start and end of the event. Please consider putting your name down and helping out the school with this fantastic fundraiser. It’s nice to have the monies raised come from outside the school for a change! Just fill in the slip below and return to the office. We will send home your shift information and entry ticket the week of the event. Thank you!
