Today, Taos is a hub of acti vity – one of two mountain towns to host the top Grammy award winning band Mumford & Sons, home to the newly designated Rio Grande del Norte Nati onal Monument, sti ll known as one of the original art colonies in the United States, and so much more...

And looking back, our history spans centuries. From the 1,000+ year-old sacred Taos Pueblo to the Hispanic heritage that infl uences everything from our architecture to our customs; to the Old West embodied in our stories of Kit Carson, Governor Bent and Long John Dunn, to the birthplace of the Western Art movement at the turn of the last century, everything in our tri-cultural heritage is authenti c and waiti ng for you to experience.

Locally, the Town of Taos is on the move, with a fi scally sound government poised to respond quickly to the challenges of the current economic environment. We’re moving ahead with expanding our airport, high alti tude training; distance learning and entrepreneurial development; and the revitalizati on of the Taos art and writer’s colony through our state designati on as an Arts and Cultural District. Close by, you’ll fi nd a revitalized and re-energized Taos Ski Valley.

The 100% solar-powered Klauer Campus of UNM Taos (a fi rst in the nati on) has expanded and consolidated south of town. In additi on to improvements in organic farming and ranching practi ces, Taos is becoming a center for alternati ve energy technologies and sustainable building. Taos is also working to att ract fi lm and TV producti on as well as post producti on in conjuncti on with the New Mexico Film Offi ce.

So experience our unique Adventures de Taos during the New Mexico Municipal League’s 56th Annual Conference for the fun, learning, networking opportuniti es, and the opportunity to experience the sides of Taos that will have you returning to your own community with fresh thinking and new ideas to implement!

You’ll Love Our Adventures de Taos

I am parti cularly excited about this year’s Community Project. This year we will be assisti ng the Dream Tree Project. The Dream Tree Project provides at-risk youth with a respectf ul, loving and safe place to become independent, positi vely-involved members of the community. The Dream Tree Project operates an Emergency Youth Shelter as well as a Transiti onal Living Program where they educate youth with basic life skills and help them to complete school, maintain employment, att end therapy, and transiti on to being independent, self-suffi cient members of the community. We will be assisti ng the Dream Tree Project in three ways: painti ng a couple of their apartments and cleaning out and inventorying their storage space and gardening. We plan to have lunch with a few of the residents prior to beginning work. Please bring your grubby clothes and meet me in the parking lot right in front of the Sagebrush Inn main entrance at 11:30 am, August 27. We will carpool over to the facility, have lunch and then engage in some very meaningful and helpful work. Hope to see you all there.Randy Van Vleck, NMML General Counsel

While in Taos...

Tiwa-speaking Indians established the Taos Pueblo roughly 1000 years ago. The Pueblo is adobe - an earth, straw, and water mix, poured into forms or shaped into bricks. (This constructi on predates the adobe brick that were introduced by the Spanish.) The Indians generally lived in the Pueblo village in the winter and out in their fi elds in the summer. The buildings were home and fortress, complemented by 12 foot walls providing crucial protecti on over ti me and when the Spanish Conquistadors arrived in 1540. The cost to visit the Pueblo is roughly $15.00 per person, includes an entry fee and a $3.00 per person ti p. The guided tour by a Taos Pueblo Indian is really worth it. If you want to see the world from a diff erent point of view, take the tour, purchase some homemade bread, and sit next to the river to experience Taos Pueblo, which means “the red willow village”. Locati on: The Pueblo is on the north side of town. Call in advance to fi nd out if the Pueblo is open, 575-758-1028.

Taos Pueblo

Millicent lived hard and fast in the world. Her marriages numbered three: an Argenti ne playboy, an American businessman, and a count. She came to Taos in 1947 and became a real patron of Indian arti sts. Her collecti on of Indian-made pieces that she designed herself is all housed at the museum. Look for the Barella door. There were once six of the Barella doors in the Sagebrush Inn and now one is displayed at the Millicent Rogers museum. Barella sculpted in the style of Picasso though he was never exposed to the European modern art form. Locati on: north of town, off the main highway, on Millicent Rogers Road. Open Tuesday thru Sunday, November through March, 575-758-2462.

Millicent Rogers Museum

Stop your car at the bridge and walk over it. It is a breathtaking view of the Rio Grande River. Be on the lookout for golden and bald eagles. In spring and summer you will spot raft ers. The bridge is located roughly 10 miles west on Highway 64.

The Rio Grande Gorge Bridge

They call it Biotecture, and in Taos, they have been doing it for over 40 years! Earthships are buildings that will take care of you while sti ll being sustainable, aff ordable, strong and meeti ng your local building codes. Take a scenic drive to the Rio Grande Gorge Bridge just 10 minutes west of town, conti nue another couple of miles and you will see the Earthships’ Visitors Center on your right. Go and experience what these most interesti ng and beauti ful homes are like amidst incredible mountain vistas!

Taos Earthships Visitor’s Center

The church is traditi onal adobe mission-style built in 1815 in the shape of a cross. It sits in the plaza of Ranchos de Taos. The plaza was where the fi rst line of defense was to fi ght off Indian att acks. When you heard the bell tolling and it wasn’t for church, you herded your catt le and sheep into the square and took a defensive positi on on the walls of the buildings. The church has a cistern underneath it to provide water. Inside the church view the alter boards (reredros): the one in front with the oil painti ng is nice, but the true gem is the original alter board to the side, painted by the locals when the church was fi rst built. Georgia O’Keeff e did the most famous painti ng of the church. Locati on: 1 mile from the Sagebrush Inn, south on Highway 68, to Ranchos de Taos, on the left .
