Dwellers, the latest Internet catchphrase, is a metaphor for
narrow residence and true reflection for life of the north drifters in
Beijing; And due to the high rent, they have to choose rooms with
poor lighting, sound and insulation which have certain potential
security issue. A single partition is of about 50 to 60 square meters
divided averagely into 3-4 single rooms and each square meter area
can only fit a bed. Each generation of north drifter’s life is of both
pain and happiness.
The generation of 90s who just enters society is of no exception.
The high housing price confines them in a tiny "rectangle" where
there are both hope and lost. Group rent, is the first lesson given by
society. To improve living conditions of this group has become the
recent topic.

This clothing shop mainly focuses on fashionable brand men’s wear.
Black, white and gray are the basic color of this store, which could
emphasize the products. There are two window displays, and seats,

customers to have a good rest, which demonstrate fashion, brief,
ease and elegance.

Lighting Design
Spotlighting
Basic illumination: The aim of it is to keep the integrity of colors of this store, and extend
the sense of brightness, in order to keep the basic lighting of this shop. In addition, this case
contains two lighting types, one is embedded ceiling tube light, and the other one is ceiling
light.
Compared with fashionable style and prevalent featured products, spotlighting is
astonishingly paramount. It could form three-dimensional sense, and highlight the feature of
the product. In addition, it could also be used in window display, logo, brand spokesman and
models, in order to strengthen the effectiveness of the brand and emphasize the validity of
commodity and display.
The theme of design also needs to match the style of clothes, in order to fully present
clothing.
Color designThe color of black, white and gray are the main tone of design in
this store, which occupy most area of the space. This design could
let people feel the special charmer and character with substantial
ease, and could enhance the buying inclination. Furthermore,
ceiling, floor, display stands and advertisements are dramatically
integrated, which could be in response to the commodity.

This plan is designed for medium house type, which is owned
by a young couple who engage in IT with active mind and good
taste. Therefore, this design emphasizes the gentle, cultivated
and rational character. The color is vivid but doesn’t vary
enormously, which can reflect their elegance. There is so special
change for the wall, apart from the bedroom, owing to the clear
division of different space of the house type. Confronted with the
noisy modern life, everyone is eager for an entirely relaxed living
space, and that is why this design focuses on it. Consequently,
the concision, warmth, sweet and transparent feeling are the key
points to release the exhausted feeling of the owner. In addition,
its concision and consideration will link the work of the owner to
his daily life perfectly.

Dining room is a place for family members to enjoy
delicious food or hold family meeting. The warm color
tone, especially the orange color makes the room bright.
The decoration adopts ancient vase and Chinese painting
peony, which reflect Chinese tradition as well.
The main bedroom is different from other space, in that it is
the most private part of the house and it should be secret,
not too bright, quiet, and it may be equipped with bath. This
would make people feel comfortable and quiet. The bedroom
is not large enough, except for double bed, it is equipped with
wardrobe, bed-side table and floor-lamp. The wall near the bed
uses hard roll to piece together, which is simple, concise, soft
and stereoscopic. The color of the furniture and light is also the
warm color tone, which could release people from fatigue and
could let people fall into sound asleep.
Sitting room is the centre of life, and it is also an omnipotent and public space,
which is different from the private one. Taking the family members, public status
and relationship into consideration is of substantial importance. Changing the
display of furniture can create a stable space and can meet the requirement for
space of this family. As for ground, stone plays an important role. Considering the
wall and ceiling also adopt some stone and the birdcage on the ground, Chinese
landscape painting is vividly expressed. The simple decoration and furniture
makes the whole room clean, tidy and bright.
I. An Overview to the Cave Dwelling in the northern part of Shan-
xi
1. The natural Environment of the Cave Dwelling
1.1 The natural Conditions of the Form
In accordance with the location of Shan-xi province, it is usually
divided into three main areas, which are Shanbei, Guanzhong and
Shannan.
Shanbei is the dominant part of the Loess Plateau, whose
topography differs from other parts in China. It is witnessed that
the northwest is higher than the southeast part, and apart from
the sand belt along the Great wall coupled with some mountainous
region, most places
in Shanbei are
covered with loess
approximately
50-150 meters.
In addition, its
compression
resistance and
shearing strength
are of high level
due to the well-
distributed structure
of loess. Therefore,
after excavation, it
could still remain
stable. Considering
the diminishing amount of precipitation in this region, it provides
outstanding physiographic condition for cave dwelling.
1.2 The loess plateau and cave dwelling
The average temperature in the loess plateau in Shanbei is roughly
8.5-12.0℃ . The climate in Shanbei is arid in that Shanbei has the
least amount of precipitation yet the longest period of sunshine (
which could last 2500 - 2900 hours or so), and the frost-free days
could last approximately 150 - 190 days.
2. The Origins of Cave Dwelling in Shanbei
According to the developing stages, the cave dwelling has witnessed
the following stages:
1) 500,000 years ago, there appeared an assortment of stonewares
of excavation which indicates that from that time, people could
utilize stonewares to dig loess cavings.
2) 8,000 years ago, there appeared semi-cave dwelling
3) During Shia dynasty, Shang dynasty and the Western Zhou
dynasty, there appeared a majority of wooden houses, while most
slaves remained living in caves.
4) During Qin dynasty and han dynasty, there appeared porcelain
and earthenware, subsequently, there appeared a term, Yao,
referring to caves.
5) During Wei, jin and the Southern and northern dynasties,
the technology of Mason Chiseling stone reached a high level,
therefore, stone caves were popular.
6) During Sui and Tang dynasties, the development of Chinese
ancient architecture was mature, and the folk exploited loess cave
dwellings in their daily life.
7) During Yuan dynasty, it was documented that the earliest cave
dwelling was the relics of jin Tai Temple Zhang Sanfeng cave
dwelling in Baoji City of Shan-xi province.
8) Since Ming and Qing dynasties, cave dwellings had been adopted
and utilized widely. What’s more, many existing cave dwellings
constructed in Ming and Qing dynasties are still located in the
gullies of loess plateau, which had become the invaluable treasure
of the architecture in China.

II.The Patterns of the Villages of cave dwellings in Shanbei
1. Chinese people are prone to build constructions taking the
topography into consideration, and so does the loess plateau.
The soil cliff in loess plateau is a natural place for excavating
cave dwelling. Since it costs little efforts and outlay, coupled with
moderate temperature in summers and winters, it is optimal for
living.
Due to the well-distributed structure of loess, its compression
resistance and shearing strength are of high level, which provide
a perfect condition for the construction of cave dwelling.
Consequently, after the excavation, it could still maintain steady.
Up to now, cave dwelling is still the chief living style in most places
of Shanbei, not only in towns but also in countries.
2. The Categories of the village of cave dwellings
1) Against Cliff ---- villages located between the cliffs or in the
gullies
The transverse galleries are invariably connected to each other
in lines or like steps with higher ones and lowers. Accordingly,
the feature of this kind of architecture, from the integration to
decoration, has shown a perfect harmony between soil and building
and indicated the excellent combination between cave dwellings
and natural environment.
2) Sunken ---- villages on loess tableland
In general, it is named sunken cave dwelling or underground patio
cave dwelling, and it is also called pit cave dwelling or patio cave
dwelling. The process of building this sort of cave dwelling is
following: In the very beginning, dig a square melt pit, after which
dig in all directions and then the sunken quadrangle dwellings
form. If we stand on the ground, we can only see the top of the
tree, the house will be out of sight. This kind of house is frequently
built in a stretch of loess plateau. A majority of underground
quadrangle dwellings adopt this style of architecture, and one
household will posses one of this kind of dwellings.
3) Independent ---- villages of cave dwellings on the ground

III.An Overview of melt pit dwellings
1. Overview
The building of melt pit dwelling is not of great difficulties.
To begin with, we need to dig a rectangular or square melt pit
as patio which is about 6-7 meters in depth and 12-15 meters in
length. Then we need to dig 8-12 cave-houses from the wall of the
melt pit. Each cave-house is approximately 3 meters in height,
4 meters in width and 8-12 meters in depth. In addition, it has
a doom. The wall less than 2 meters in height is vertical, while
over 2 meters is like the arch. The cave-house in the corner is dug
towards the surface of the ground, which could form the aisle with
stairs towards the surface of the ground. This is the passageway
for people to get in or go out. The upper part of the passageway is
called door opening, which is the entrance of the melt pit dwellings.
The surrounding of the melt pit dwelling, which link with the
ground is surrounded by gray tiles, resembling eaves, and could
be used to drainage and protect the wall from the erosion of the
rain. People will also build a circle wall called barrier wall around
the eaves, which is about 30-50 centimeters. This wall could not
only decorate the house, but also prevent people or animals on the
ground from falling into the melt pit dwellings.
Apart from windows and doors, all the walls will be mopped by
loess, while the vicinity of the windows and walls and the lower
wall of the dwellings will be paved by gray brick. People will dig
downward for roughly 30 centimeters 2 meters away from the
courtyard. People will also dig a hole about 1 meter in diameter
and 4-6 meters in depth. The bottom of the hole will be covered
with cinder and covered with stone, which is primarily used to save
rainwater and waste water. Cave dwellings are the most ancient
living style on loess plateau, dating back to the cave dwelling
culture of primitive society, which has a history for more than
4500 years, and as a matter of fact, cave dwellings are the earliest
ecological construction.
2. Distribution Area
Melt pit dwellings is part of sunken cave dwellings and they
are distributed around Sanxiamen in henan, the southern part
of Shan-xi, Qingyang in Gansu province and part of Shaanxi.
Among these places, the dwellings in Sanxiamen in henan are best
preserved and in large scale.

3. The Basic Procedure of Construction
3.1 Procedures
1) Make a plan
2) Choose a suitable place
3) Setting out and paying off
4) Dig patio
5) Dig passageway, door opening and well
6) Dig cave-house
7) Build the front part of dwellings, epaulement, cornice and
barrier wall
8) Build bulk water slope, reinforce ceiling ---- build drainage system
9) Fix door frame, window frame and the isolation of dwellings
10) Paint wall
11) Deal with the ground
12) Build kang and oven, make and fix windows and doors
13) Decoration
3.2 Setting out and paying off
All the work normally needs 3-5 people and will spend half a day.
The main procedures are as follows.
1) Decide the type of the melt pit according to the topography
2) Set orientation with compass: According to the compass, make
sure the central point and the center line.
3) Set right angle with spare spigot: According to the central point,
draw a line which is perpendicular to the center line. Almost every
household here has the spare spigot.
4) Measure data with shakudo
5) Site specific with timber piles
6) Set the corner point with a plate of orthogonal method: Combine
the timber piles in four directions with string or rope, and then
adjust the string or rope outward between two piles, until we set a
straight angle. Therefore, this straight angle will be set, and people
will set the other three points in this way.
7) Adjust measured deviation with diagonal method
8) Set lime line
3.3 Dig patio and seepage
After setting out and paying off, people could choose a lucky day
to dig patio. This part will produce a substantial amount of loess.
normally, people will dig out loess of 600-1000 cubic meters. This
procedure requires little technique, people always complete this
part by their own family.

Cave dwellings design in Xi’an
nO.5
Cave dwelling is the traditional living style for
China, which has a long history and can reflect
Chinese culture. The melt pit cave dwelling
does have advantages, but many people give up
living in the cave dwellings since the economy
developed rapidly and there is an increasing
improvement in people’s daily life. To find how
this devastating phenomenon happened and
how to change it is the theme of this scheme
design.

Cave home Caves are generally available for three generations to live,
so they are divided into elder room, couples room, at last
the children and kitchen utility room during the design
process. Complied with the characteristics of the building,
function areas are divided on simplicity and liveliness;
Thanks to the typically raw soil building material, the
building is warm in winter and cool in summer with good
ventilation, so the toilet is set inside the kiln.

It keeps the tradition of planting in the central
part, using local plants, such as apple tree, fig
tree, persimmon tree, and so forth.

nO.7
Since the post-modern society is more prevalent than before,
environmental design is becoming increasingly diverse and plural.
This case can not only reveal the special feature of design industry,
but also fully express the culture and aesthetic value.
The target of this case is a small design office, which contains two floors, equipped with reception, pantry,
manager office, meeting room and accounting office. In order to utilize the space appropriately and efficiently,
half open style is adopted which could combine the requirement of office daily routine and working procedure.
In addition, taking functional field and the communication between staff and leaders into consideration, the first
floor is for daily work and the second floor is for administration. What’s more, the design of reception and the
wall and ceiling of meeting room could be the symbol of the company,. In addition, the wall of the manager’s
office is glass, which could enhance communication.
This case not only remain the sense of domain and secret for the space, but also has the interaction with
the bigger space, which meets the requirement of distinct groups and makes every element simple and
integrated, which also shows the intergrowth between the whole space and the part of it. It highlights
character by simple and brief approach and common material to create bright spacious style. It also
takes different functions of the space into consideration. By comparison between different single element,
it demonstrates fashionable image. Therefore, the whole space reveals fashion, ease and brief, through the
usage of distinct functions, materials and matching of colors, which could not only meet the request of
office but also reveals fashion and beauty of modern design.
