INTRODUCTION The Auto Labe Model 560 is a rugged and dependable, cost-effective semi-automatic labeling machine designed to easily Tamp labels on flat and slightly curved product containers. The unit is simple to operate and is a much quicker and more precise alternative to hand labeling. The standard unit employs Auto Labes proven Model 280 Label Applier integrated with an electro-pneumatically operated Tamp mechanism. The unit is operated via foot switch and is small and lightweight enough for tabletop use. Products are manually loaded one at a time, labeled and then removed. The versatile Model 560 can be adapted with custom Product Fixtures to accommodate tapered and irregularly shaped containers. The unit can label a broad spectrum of products ranging from small cosmetic containers to large plastic jugs.

This manual is in two parts. Part One covers the Model 560 Base Unit, and Part Two covers the Model 280 Label Applier.

The Model 560 Semi-Automatic Tamp Label Applicator is comprised of two main components: - The 560 Base Unit, which includes the pneumatic components, a Product Fixture to

hold the product, along with a Tamp Assembly. - The Model 280 Label Applier, which dispenses the label out onto the Tamp Head.

Note: Though the system is comprised of two units, when assembled, the system is designated the Model 560.

    10

    Operational Sequence Description

The unit is powered by 115 Volt AC power. An Optional 240 Volt AC Export Version is available. Compressed air is applied to the system for operating the pneumatic components. Power is applied by depressing the red pushbutton switch located on the front panel of the Model 280 Applier. When energized, the Applier will automatically advance one label to ensure a label is ready on the Tamp Head to apply to the product. The product to be labeled is placed in the Product Fixture. The Product Fixture is usually a custom mold or set of adjustable brackets for anchoring a specific product in the correct position for labeling. The Foot Switch is depressed which signals the Tamp Solenoid Valve in the Model 560 Base to activate. This causes compressed air to be applied to the Thruster air cylinder, which causes the Thruster to extend lowering the Tamp Head to the product and transferring the label. The Thruster will remain extended for a preset time duration as set by the Tamp Head Dwell adjustment. This adjustment controls the Dwell Timer in the Base Unit. When the Dwell Timer expires, the Tamp Solenoid Valve is deactivated and the air in the Thruster air cylinder is reversed causing the Thruster to retract. This raises the Tamp Head. When the Thruster fully retracts, the Tamp Switch (Hall Effect Switch in the 240VAC version) is activated. The Tamp Switch signals the Model 280 Applier to advance a label. At the same time, the Air Assist Solenoid Valve is activated and a stream of air exits the holes in the Air Assist Tube located below the Stripper Plate. This stream of air aids in transitioning the new label from the Stripper Plate to the Tamp Head. An array of holes through the Tamp Head transfer vacuum to capture the label after it is dispensed. When the label has advanced, the leading edge of the next label triggers the Star Wheel Label Sensor signaling the completion of dispensing one label. The Star Wheel Label Sensor outputs a signal telling the Applier its job is complete. The Applier stops advancing the web and the power to the Air Assist Solenoid Valve is removed stopping the stream of air. The cycle is complete with a fresh label waiting on the Tamp Head for the next product.

    uncovered.

    Figure 12, Web Alignment

    5. Energize the Applier. A label will be fed out onto the Tamp Head. Remove the label from the Tamp Head and press the Label Advance switch to feed a new label onto the head. Check the label position on the Tamp Head. The label should cover the vacuum holes in the Tamp Head. It should not be wrinkled or hang excessively over the trailing edge of the Tamp Head. It should smoothly transition onto the head.

    - The combination of vacuum and Air Assist pressure must be adjusted properly for good label transition to the Tamp Head. Adjust the Vacuum Throttle Valve (see Figure 7) for the minimum amount of vacuum necessary to securely hold the label on the head. Excessive vacuum can cause the label to stop too soon not allowing it to get out far enough on the head.

    - Adjust the Air Assist Throttle Valve for the minimum amount of air necessary to transition the label from the Stripper Plate to the head. Note: The direction of airflow from the Air Assist Tube is at approximately a 45-degree angle towards the bottom of the label. Minor adjustments to this angle can correct label transition problems in conjunction with vacuum and Air Assist pressure adjustments.

Figure 13, Label on Tamp Head

    6. The Product Fixture is designed to hold the product in the correct position for labeling. It is typically custom manufactured for a specific product. When the product is placed in the Product Fixture, it should be properly positioned with respect to the label on the Tamp Head. When the Tamp Head is lowered onto the product the label is placed correctly on the product. Product Fixtures vary considerably but normally have screws that fasten them to the unit which allow adjusting their position front to back and side to side. This aids in getting proper label placement. Once repetitive and consistent label placement is achieved on the Tamp Head, the product position is adjusted via the Product Fixture Adjustment to ensure the Tamp Head delivers the label to the desired location on the product. In doing so, the Thruster Flow Control valves and Tamp Dwell potentiometer may require adjustment.

  • MODEL 560 OWNERS MANUAL

    22

    Figure 14, Flow Control Valves

    7. The Flow Control Valves are located at the top and bottom portion of the Tamp Cylinder. Each valve has an adjustment that throttles airflow to one side of the piston inside the cylinder. They control the thrust force and speed individually in the extend and retract directions. This, in conjunction with the Pressure Regulator setting, determines the speed and force of Tamp Cylinder operation. Note: Typical Pressure Regulator setting is between 40 and 50 PSIG.

    8. The Tamp Dwell setting controls the time duration the Tamp Solenoid Valve is set to

cause the Thruster to extend. This should be adjusted to adequately press the label on the product and then retract. If adjusted for too short a time duration, the Tamp Head may not contact the product before the Thruster retracts. Too long a duration will slow overall labeling speed unnecessarily.

  • MODEL 560 OWNERS MANUAL

    23

    Figure 15, Thruster Position Adjustments

    9. The Tamp Heads position relative to the dispensing edge of the Stripper Plate is critical for proper operation. The Tamp Head must be parallel with the Stripper Plate. (See following diagram) Also, the Tamp Head is typically positioned about 1/16 to 1/8-inch horizontally away and 1/32 to 1/16-inch vertically below the level of the Stripper Plate. The fasteners that hold the cylinder to the frame are located in slotted openings that permit adjusting for these parameters. Use a level (with the system on a level surface) to aid in ensuring the Tamp Head is parallel to the Stripper Plate. The Tamp Cylinder must be in the fully raised or Home position before adjusting.

    Section Three Optional Configurations

    3.1 Gear Reduction

With some applications, especially dealing with small labels, better results are obtained by slowing the speed of the Applier down. This is accomplished by changing the Motor Drive Sprocket to a smaller size. When reducing the size of the Drive Sprocket, the Chain Tensioner Sprocket size is increased to take up the resulting slack in the chain. Assembly drawings for this configuration can be found in Section 6.3.

    3.2 Brake Installation

When an application demands an even greater level of precision, an electric brake may be added for quicker stopping of the Applier. This involves changing to a longer Drive Roller Shaft and installing an electric brake on the end of the shaft. When the Applier is stopped the electric brake stops the shaft quicker than de-energizing the motor due to coasting. Assembly drawings for this configuration can be found in Section 6.3.

Note: The Gear Reduction Configuration is always part of the Brake Installation Configuration but many applications may have the Gear Reduction Configuration without the Brake. Though these Options affect the Applier, the drawings are part of the 560 drawings because they are only associated with the Appliers use in the Model 560.

3.3 240 Volt AC Export Version

Auto Labe produces an export version of the Model 560 that operates on 240 Volts AC power at 50 Hz. This unit differs from the standard unit in several key aspects electrically but functionally operates identically. Physically it is almost indistinguishable from the standard unit. This version is primarily built for export to other countries. Both the base unit and applier are modified to support being powered by 240 VAC 50 HZ power. Wiring diagrams for the export version can be found in Part 1 Section 6.3, Optional Configuration Assembly Drawings.

    1.1 Operational Sequence (560)

When the foot pedal switch is depressed, the Base Unit will send a dispense label signal to the 280 Applier via the Pigtail (6-pin) connection on the rear panel of the Model 280. This signal is routed to the Power Module Board in the 280. The Power Module Board sends a signal to the Relay that then energizes and applies AC power to the motor assembly. The motor assembly drives the Drive Roller and Rewind Spool via chain and sprocket interface. The label web is moved through the Applier. When a label has been dispensed, the Star Wheel detects the leading edge of the next label and rotates. As it rotates, it activates a roller switch signaling the Power Module Board. The Power Module Board removes the energizing signal to the Relay de-energizing it and removing AC power from the motor. Web movement stops and the labeling sequence is complete. The cycle will repeat the next time the foot switch is depressed.

Section Two Setting up the Applier

The following procedure assumes the setup of the Labeler as described in Part One, Section Two of this document has been completed.

    2.1 Adjusting the Star Wheel

There are two adjustments associated with the star wheel. The adjustment, which determines where the edge of the label is on the stripper plate, is preset at the factory. Should this need to be changed, loosen the two #10-24 socket head cap screws that secure the label sensing assembly to the side of the applier. Move the bracket forward or back to achieve the desired label "end" location. Secure the screws and check the "star wheel switch" adjustment. The star wheel switch adjustment is made to make the star wheel actuates the roller switch that signals the applier to shut off. To make this adjustment, loosen the three screws attaching the star wheel cover and remove the cover. There are two #8-32 socket head cap screws that attach the star wheel assembly to the mounting bracket. Loosen both screws. Manually pull the web over the star wheel by removing it from the rewind spool assembly and drive roller and pull it straight back. Observe the star wheel. It should rotate when it reaches the beginning of a new label, causing the arm it is mounted on to move up and down. This movement should cause the roller switch to click on, then off. Adjust the assembly to achieve this result and re-tighten the two cap screws. Test the applier after re-webbing it.

2.2 Calibrating the Optional Label Sensor

    Figure 22, Label Sensor

The optional label sensor utilized on most applications is the photoelectric label sensor illustrated above. Calibration of the sensor is done using the following AutosetTM feature: Calibration Procedure:

    1. Align the sensor over the gap between the labels on the web. 2. Push the button marked NORMAL to auto calibrate (Autoset) the

sensor. Once calibrated, the green Autoset light should be lit continuously while the red output light should be lit when the sensor is over the gap between labels. If the sensor is located several labels from the stripper plate, removing a label to calibrate may cause two labels to be dispensed. On rare occasions, when the light is unable to penetrate the label liner, both the red and green indicators will blink four times indicating that the sensor is unable to detect the label. Whenever a different label is used, the Label Sensor should be calibrated. If the Sensor is not properly adjusted, multiple labels may be dispensed.

If the sensor cannot be adjusted to accomplish the above, check the sensor to determine if a piece of label is stuck in the sensor and that the web passes correctly through the sensors slot. A ratchet handle locks the sensor and its bracket in place. Properly aligned on the Stripper Plate, the label should be back from the Stripper Plates edge no more than the gap between labels. Ideally, the labels leading edge should be at the edge of the Stripper Plate or flagged (extend pass the edge) up to 1/8 inch. When the sensor and sensor bracket are properly aligned, the web and labels should pass freely through the sensor without rubbing hard against any surface. Several problems may occur if the web and labels rub against the side of the sensor.

    1. Labels may strip off the liner and remain in the sensor, blocking detection of the web without a label.

    2. The web may tear. 3. Excessive drag may interfere with the operation of the motor.

    55

    Section Three Maintenance

    3.1 Lubrication

All bearings and bushings on the Applier are permanently lubricated. Once every six months

(more often if needed) the applier should be disconnected from its power source and the top

cover removed. The chain should be lightly lubricated with a chain lubricant.

Should the applier make a squeaking sound when operating, it is most likely caused by the

Rewind Spool Slip Clutch. Pull the clutch pad back away from the disc and apply one or two

    drops of lightweight machine oil.

Replace the top cover before reconnecting the machine to its power source.

    3.2 Cleaning

The amount of cleaning required depends on the environment it is used in, and the type of label stock used. Excess label adhesive squeezes out from between the labels and the liner. This adhesive will sometimes build up on surfaces and mechanical parts of the applier. When this occurs, clean the machine with mineral spirits. Isopropyl alcohol is a suitable substitute for mineral spirits. Shop towels dampened with mineral spirits can be used to remove dirt and debris on the outside of the machine. Always disconnect power from the machine before cleaning. Never submerge or spray water or solvents on the applier.

Particular attention should be paid to periodic cleaning of the star wheel, drive roller, idler roller,

and all surfaces that come in contact with the label or web. Never use sharp tools to remove

stray labels from roller surfaces as the potential damage can cause a deterioration in machine

    performance.

Clean the O-Ring on the Feed Wheel with soapy water or denatured alcohol only. Any other

cleaning agent will cause damage to the O-Ring.

Check the condition of the UHMW of Mylar tape used to reduce friction between the label web

and the stripper plate. Replace this tape if worn or damaged.

Keeping the applier clean and free from adhesive build up will extend its life.

  • MODEL 560 OWNERS MANUAL

    56

    3.3 Star Wheel Maintenance

When the star wheel becomes dirty with adhesive or dirt build-up, it might fail to catch the

leading edge of the label. This can result in multiple labels being dispensed due to it not

signaling the machine to stop. To clean, loosen the three screws located on the cover of the

switch plate assembly and remove cover. Remove spring from pin on star wheel arm and pull

arm off shaft. Clean with mineral spirits. Next, oil lightly, making sure wheel turns freely, and

    replace.
