HARSH OPERATING ENVIRONMENTS

The AW101 has proven operational capability in the harshest of

environments, from the extreme cold / icing conditions of the NorthAtlantic, to the extreme hot of the Arabian Gulf:

• Temperature range from -40ºC to ISA+35ºC

• Single Pilot IFR Operations, Day and Night

• Cross wind takeoff, landing and hover up to 40 kts

• Operations in known icing conditions when equipped with the

(optional) Full Ice Protection System

• Deck operations in wind speed up to 50 kts with (optional)

• Takeoff / Landing operations with typical ship roll angles of 10º

• Advanced rotor blade design maximises situational awareness

in reduced visibility conditions.

TOTAL MULTI-ROLE FLEXIBILITY

NEW CONCEPT

The AW101 is the latest variant of the EH101 helicopter.

The EH101 was designed for military, maritime and civil

roles. Its design and development was fully supported

by an extensive program of government and industry

funded research into the future requirements for medium

lift helicopters. Designed, developed and produced by

AgustaWestland, the AW101 has been in operational

service since 1999.

This brochure describes the maritime variant of the

AW101, which features new higher power engines and next

generation main rotor blades for enhanced hot and high

performance, and new cockpit displays for reduced pilot

workload and increased mission effectiveness.

SUPERIOR MISSION PERFORMANCE

LONG RANGE

With a typical range of 750 nm (over 1,300 km) in standard

conguration and a large cap acity cabin, the AW101 is the

most capable maritime helicopter available in the world today.

The AW101 has demonstrated over 900 nm continuous ying

with auxiliary fuel tanks.

In addition to its already excellent range capabilities, the

AW101 range can be further extended when using the optional

Air-to-Air refuelling (successfully demonstrated with C-130

aircraft) and Hover-In-Flight refuelling capabilities (frequently

used by AW101 maritime operators).

CLASS LEADING OEI CAPABILITY

The AW101 is equipped with three civil cer tied (FAA Type

Certicate E8NE) General Electric CT7-8E engines, each

controlled by dual channel FADEC units. This engine

conguration provides:

• Superior One Engine Inoperative (OEI) performance – can

safely complete mission with two engines

• Minimised exposure in critical phases of ight; takeoff,

landing and hovering

• Twin Engine Cruise (TEC) option to further extend the

superior range capability

ACSR

ACSR (ACTIVE CONTROL OF STRUCTURAL RESPONSE)

An award winning system that uses computer controlled

forces to reduce the helicopter’s basic vibration to very

low levels. Effective throughout the ight envelope, ACSR

contributes to:

• Reduced life cycle costs

• Reduced structural fatigue

• Greater avionic systems reliability

• Improved crew work environment and survivor comfort

• Built in redundancy

SHIP OR SHORE BASED

The AW101 routinely operates from ship or shore bases

around the world. Existing variants are cleared to operate

from a variety of vessels ranging from small Type 23 Frigates

up to Helicopter Assault Carriers.

The ight characteristics of the AW101 are designed

specically for ship operations in extreme weather conditions.

Large main and tail rotor thrust margins and excellent control

response provides the agility needed for operations in rough

sea states. The wide tricycle undercarriage and negative

thrust capability ensures stability during landing and takeoff

operations.

For maximum exibility, the AW101 can be equipped with an

(optional) Deck Lock system, enabling 360° rotation on the

deck for optimal positioning. This feature, coupled with thecomplementary deck handling system assures maximum

safety during deck movements in adverse conditions up to

Sea State 6.

The AW101 can be equipped with an optional main rotor and

tail rotor folding system, enabling stowage, transport and

maintenance, even within a conned hangar space.

MODERN TECHNOLOGY

The AW101 incorporates the latest technological advances

with fully integrated avionics architecture, state of the

art main rotor blade design, a unique active vibration

management system and the latest in sensor technologies.

LOW WORKLOAD ERGONOMIC COCKPIT

The AW101 is equipped with an advanced cockpit design that

reduces crew workload by continuously monitoring systems

and only providing warnings if crew action is necessary.

MODERN COCKPIT & AVIONICS

• Five multi-function, 10” x 8” LCD displays

• Synthetic Vision ready architecture

• Fully integrated core avionics system

• Single pilot IFR operation

AFCS

The fully coupled digital, dual-redundant Automatic Flight

Control System performs:

• Search patterns and SAR approaches

• Automatic transitions to and from the hover

• Cable hover, hover hold and hover trim control modes

• Category II instrument approaches

• IFR navigation (inc. procedural APP, DEP, Enroute, Holds)

MISSION SENSORS
