A SHARE IN GOD’S KINGDOM Today concludes a three-week series of Gospel texts in which we have listened to a total of seven parables about the kingdom. The believer is asked to consider the request that God made of Solo-mon in today’s first reading: ―Ask something of me and I will give it to you‖ (1 Kings 3:5). Today’s parables about the treasure buried in the field and the pearl of great price should prompt us to an-swer, ―A share in your kingdom, O God!‖ Today we dis-cover that the kingdom of God is beyond value, a price-less treasure. Unfortunately, our culture bombards us with things that it believes are priceless treasures—the bigger and better SUVs, anti-aging and anti-balding creams and salves, miracle diets, and so much more. Having a share in God’s kingdom and helping to bring about that kingdom are the greatest treasures that we can ever hope to gain. © Copyright, J. S. Paluch Co.

de Dios es invalorable, un tesoro que no tiene precio. Desafortunadamente, nuestra cultura nos bombardea con cosas que considera tesoros inapreciables: vehículo utilitario deportivo, cremas antiarrugas y contra la calvicie, dietas milagrosas, y mucho, mucho más. Tener
una participación en el Reino de Dios y contribuir a la
venida del Reino son los mayores tesoros que jamás

Etiquette at Mass Joining in Sung Prayer
It is interesting how music is used, and one could say,
abused at times. In many places (like elevators and restau-rants) it is used just as background noise - to cover peo-
ple’s conversation or just to fill the void of silence. At other times, it is abused - such as relegating a National Anthem
(a musical composition intended to symbolize a people
united as they sing together) to a performance by a solo singer or specific musical group. Such uses and abuses af-
fect our attitude towards music in liturgy - we think of it as background music to cover a particular action or that which
someone else is to perform.
However, music in Catholic worship has a much different intent than this. It is first and foremost, a form of prayer.
We are praying when we sing - which prompted St. Augustine to claim that the one who sings prays twice. It is
also intended to unite the gathered assembly of diverse persons into one body by the action of singing/praying in
one voice.
Singing isn’t everyone’s preferred way of prayer (some because they are well aware that their voice does not con-
tribute to but detracts from the beauty of the music) and so do not even pick up the hymnal when the hymn is an-
nounced. However, praying is at the heart of our gathering
together at liturgy. Even if one doesn’t intend to sing along with the hymn, it is good etiquette to at least be praying
along with the other members of the assembly, who are singing, by praying the text as presented in the hymnal.
So, intending to sing or not, please pick up the book and
pray the text of the hymn along with one another.

Es interesante como se usa la música, y hasta podríamos de-
cir que a veces, se abusa de ella. En muchos lugares (como los elevadores y restaurantes) se utiliza como ruido de fondo
– para cubrir las conversaciones de las personas o tan sólo para llenar el hueco del silencio. En otras ocasiones, se abu-
sa de ella – como se relega el Himno Nacional (una composi-
ción musical que pretende simbolizar a personas unidas cuan-do cantan juntas) a una presentación de un cantante solo, o
un grupo musical específico. Esos usos y abusos afectan nuestra actitud hacia la música en la liturgia – pensamos que
es música de fondo para cubrir una acción en particular o que
otra persona debe interpretar. Sin embargo, la música en una ceremonia Católica tiene
muy diferente sentido. Esta es principalmente una forma de orar. Cuando cantamos estamos rezando – lo que ocasionó
que San Agustín expresara que el que canta, reza doble. También pretende unir al diverso grupo de personas reunidas
en un solo cuerpo, por el hecho de cantar/orar en una sola
voz. El cantar no es para todos su forma preferida de orar
(algunos porque están conscientes de que su voz no contribu-ye sino que deteriora la bella música) y por lo tanto, ni siquie-
ra toman el libro de himnos cuando este se anuncia. Sin em-
bargo, el orar está en el corazón de nuestra unión en la litur-gia. Aún cuando no se piense cantar con el grupo, es de
buen comportamiento por lo menos rezar con los otros miem-bros de la asamblea que están cantando, rezando el texto
como se presenta en el libro. Así que, aunque no pretenda
cantar, por favor tome el libro y rece el texto del himno junto con los demás.
Classroom Doors
A number of years ago, all the school’s doors (to
classrooms, restrooms, closets, etc.) were painted with scenes from our Sacred Scriptures. This was
made possible by individuals and families sponsor-
ing a door. In their splendid coloring, they not only enhanced our school visually, but also added
to the catholicity of the environment. Unfortu-nately, two safety factors have made replacing
these doors necessary – fire safety laws and safe-environment for children policies.
The Police Department has offered to take the
doors (which are currently in outside storage) to use for their door breaching practices. However,
before dispensing with them in that way we want to offer the opportunity to those who sponsored a
door to have it for themselves. If you sponsored a
door and would like to have it, please contact Ms. Ann Zeches via e-mail ([email protected]) prior to
the opening of school on August 11th.
Puertas de los Salones Escolares
Hace algunos años, todas las puertas de la escuela,
(a los salones, baños, closets, etc.) fueron pintadas con escenas tomadas de nuestras Sagradas Escritu-
ras. Esto fue posible porque personas y familias pa-trocinaron una puerta. Con su espléndido colorido,
estas no sólo adornaron visualmente nuestra escuela,
sino que también agregaron catolicismo al ambiente. Desafortunadamente, dos factores de seguridad han
hecho necesario reemplazar estas puertas – leyes de seguridad contra incendios, y políticas de un ambien-
te seguro para los niños. El Departamento de Policía ha ofrecido tomar las
puertas (que actualmente se encuentran almacena-
das afuera) para usarlas en sus prácticas de romper puertas. Sin embargo, antes de separarnos de ellas
de esa forma, queremos ofrecer a los que patrocina-ron una puerta, que la conserven ellos. Si usted pa-
trocinó una puerta y la quiere, por favor comuníque-

Bautizo de Infantes en la Parroquia de San Cirilo de Alejandria
En nuestra parroquia, el bautizo de un bebé o de un niño (hasta de 7 años de edad), se celebra mensualmente (con excepción de las épocas de Adviento y Cuaresma). El sacramento se celebra en español en un sábado deter-minado a las 12:00 PM o en inglés en un domingo deter-minado a las 3:00 PM. En ocasiones, durante el año litúr-gico, los bautizos se pueden celebrar durante la misa del
domingo. Antes de dicha celebración, se requiere que los padres asis-tan a una Serie de reuniones de Preparación para el Bautizo
que se ofrecen 5 veces al año. Por lo tanto, los padres necesi-tan prepararse con anticipación, planeando asistir a tiempo a
las sesiones de preparación (aún durante el embarazo). Las
series de preparación se efectúan los martes de 6:00 a 8:00 PM. En este otoño, las sesiones de preparación serán en las
siguientes fechas:
Agosto - no pláticas
6, 13, 20 de septiembre Octubre - no pláticas
8, 15, 22 de noviembre
Diciembre - no pláticas

To have a baby baptized at St. Cyril Parish
In our parish, the baptism of an infant or young child (up to the age of 7 years old) is celebrated monthly
(except during Advent & Lent). The sacrament is cele-brated in English on a designated Sunday at 3:00 PM
or in Spanish on a designated Saturday at 12:00 PM.
Periodically during the Liturgical Year, baptisms may be celebrated at a Sunday Mass.
Prior to the celebration, parents are required to at-tend a Baptism Preparation Series which is only offered 5
times each year and not just prior to a celebration of baptism.
Thus, parents need to prepare ahead of time, making plans to attend the preparation sessions in a timely manner (even dur-
ing the pregnancy). The preparation series are held on Sun-days from 9:15 to 10:45 AM. The following are the dates for
these preparation sessions this fall.
August - No Sessions September 11th, 18th, 25th
October- No Sessions November 6th, 13th, 20th
December - No Sessions
