RECTAL CANCER, Part 1

Elias D. Adamos, M.D.

Rectal cancer is a tumor or tumors located in the rectum. The rectum is the last several inches of the large intestine. It starts at the end of the final seg-ment of your colon and ends in the short and narrow

passage leading to the anus. Like many other types of cancer, rectal cancer can be benign or malignant. Because of the proximity of the colon to the rectum, cancers located in these areas are often referred to as colorectal cancer.

The similarities and differences of rectal and colon cancers Rectal and colon cancers are similar since both may originate from intestinal cells. Cancers in the intestines are called adenocarcinomas. Thus, both cancers are adenocarcinomas unless proven otherwise.

The difference lies in the strategy or mode of treatment. Complete surgical removal of rectal cancer, because of the tight anatomical space, is challenging and highly complex. Additional treatment before or after surgery, or both, may be advocated and instituted to reduce the chance that the cancer will return. Advances in medicine and surgery over the past 30 years have made rectal cancer curable.

What causes rectal cancer? Rectal cancer is often caused by errors in the DNA. In most cases, the cause of the errors is unknown. Said errors result to cancerous cells that continue to divide and multiply even when new cells are not needed. In some families, these errors or cellular mutations are passed from parents to children.

Risk factors The older you are, the greater is the risk. Most patients with rectal cancer are diagnosed when they are over 50 years old. Colorectal can-cer occurs less frequently in younger people. If you have a past medical or personal history of rectal, colon cancer, or intestinal polyps, you have a greater risk for colon or rectal cancer in the future. Inflammation in the colon, rectum, or elsewhere in the intestines increase your risk for rectal and colon cancer. A family history of colon or rectal cancer is a risk factor. Other factors include: low vegetable and high red meat diet, inactivity or lack of exercise, diabetes, obesity, alcohol, smoking, stress, and radiation therapy from previous cancer treatment.

Signs and symptoms of rectal cancer See your doctor if you have the following symptoms suggesting rectal cancer: Change in bowel habits (alternating diarrhea and consti-pation or more frequent bowel movements), dark or red blood in stool, mucus in stool, narrow or small caliber stool, abdominal pain, painful bowel movements, iron deficiency anemia, a feeling that your bowel doesn’t empty completely, unexplained weight loss, and weakness or fatigue.

Dear Fellow Manila Rotarians,

Greetings from Spain! Last week, our club held a successful and well organized meeting when we opened our doors to Former US Senator James Webb, Jr. where he enlightened us on US-Phil-ippine relations before a big audience which were comprised of dignitaries, Rotarians from the district, alumni of US universities and our very own Manila Rotarians to the RCM leadership in organizing a successful membership event. On this note, I wish to thank VP Lance Masters, PE/Dir. Jackie Rodriguez, DE/BLA Amading Valdez, IPP Jimmie Policarpio, DE/Treasurer Nicky Vil-laseñor, Rtn. Farid Schoucair for extending his hotel services to cater to the needs of the Rotary Club of Manila, our Secretariat and volunteers who directly worked on this Rotary endeavor.

On the international relations front, I wish to invite everyone to join us on the 49th Anniversary Fund Raising Ball of the Rota-ry Club of Kowloon East and the 70th Charter Anniversary of the Rotary Club of Taipei which both take place on the same day. Our attendance at these events will mean alot as this is an opportunity to invite them to be one with us on the culminating events of our centennial.

With respect to our centennial projects, I wish to reiterate my appeal for your utmost cooperation and participation as the suc-cess of the various centennial projects are anchored on your support.

As I have said, great things in Rotary are never done by a single person, but, by a team of Rotarians working together towards a common goal as we should bear in mind that our centennial celebration is a colossal undertaking. Under ONE CENTURY, in furtherance of ONE MISSION, towards ONE ROTARY, I remain.

Presidential Proclamation No. 413 is a proclamation signed by Presi-dent Rodrigo Roa Duterte “declaring 01 July 2018 to 30 June 2019 as the ‘Year for the Celebration of the Centennial Anniversary of the Ro-tary Club of Manila and the Rotary Movement in the Philippines and in Asia”. This was obtained through the help of IPP Jimmie Policarpio and his Board of Directors and Ex-ecutive Officers.

Monty Python’s SPAMALOT is a Rotary Club of Ma-nila-sponsored musical comedy adapted from the 1975 film Monty Python and the Holy Grail. Like the motion picture, it is a highly irreverent parody of the Ar-thurian legend, but it differs from the film in many ways. This show is a fund-raising endeavor of the club.

SARI-SARING ARALAN: 3K para sa 3K (Ka-bataan, Kababaihan, Kalalakihan para sa Karunungan, Kaugalian, Kagitingan) is based on the concept of the iconic Filipino sari-sari store, a well-known place in the community, that can be a venue for learning. The Search for The Outstanding Workers of the Republic (TOWER) Awards was founded in 1975 by the Rotary Club of Manila as an annual search for outstanding “blue collar” workers of the coun-try. Subsequently, it included in its coverage “white collar” (non-supervisory) workers. It aims to recog-nize the contributions to economic development of the legions of skilled workers who constitute the backbone of our country’s manpower capacity. The awards program transcended the confines of a Club’s concern because of its nationwide reach and significance in uplifting the Filipino workers’ morale and social status leading to greater prestige at the workplace – to the entrepreneur / employer and the colleagues, to the family and the commu-nity while enhancing individual career opportunities and promoting industrial peace.

SEEDS OF CHANGE by Rotary Club of Manila

GREEN AND GOfrom Chair Rtn. Celso Abastillas

AN A LA- ERADICATE-POLIO PLAN

When RI Pres Barry Rassin was here last July 19, 2018, your Committee made a statement, which was repeated by PDG Obet Pagdanganan at the dinner party itself, that “if only all Rotarians in the world numbering 1.2 million would plant 100 trees a year, that would be equivalent to 120 million trees”. Similarly, if only able-bodied Filipinos, of say 50 million, would plant 100 trees per year that’s equivalent to 5 billion trees. Downgrade it to just 10 trees per year, which is highly doable, it’s equivalent to 500 million trees per year or 1 billion in 2 years. Simple as it looks but the big challenge is how to make it happen. Over a round of golf and bottles of beer after golf, your Chairman and Co-Chairman Amading Valdez tried to strategize its implementation. Admitted-ly, the figures are definitely mind boggling. However, we do not actually expect to achieve that in the foreseeable future, but, the most important thing is that in our remaining years we are able to plant the seeds, the Seeds of Change, that the next generations will continue. Ours is to conceptualize and start, the young ones to follow through. This is the right time to ORGANIZE as for now it’s already late to plant trees. Pag-asa has just declared the start of North Easterlies or Amihan, signalling that we are about to enter summer. We will start partnering with other Rotary clubs, schools/students through the DepEd and the Boy Scouts of the Philippines with almost 3 million members, of which PDG Obet Pagdanganan is the current president. Actually, PDG Obet had signified a cou-ple of times to partner with RCM on tree planting. The LGU’s and DENR have to be tapped to provide the areas for planting. RA 10176. better known as Arbor Day Act of 2012, requires all able-bodied Filipinos, of at least 12 years old to plant a tree per year. Arbor Day has been set on June 25 of every year. The Church and the Register of Deeds may help enforce the law by requiring those getting married and those registering newly-born babies to plant trees. LGU’s may help too in this regard, especially, when individuals/companies are getting resident certificates or busi-ness permits. In the program we conceptualized, RCM is to act, basically, as catalyst to all its potential partners. We will start the MOVEMENT to plant trees nationwide, eventually morphing into a la-worldwide-phenomenon Eradicate Polio project of the Rotary Club International. Yes, indeed, we envision here a REVOLU-TION! For now, we will organize then mobilize later. The road to fruition is rather long and steep. We need the help of everyone to attain a small success for every small step until we attain bigger ones. We have a huge talents resource in RCM. President Susing sees the Centennial Friendship Trees as one of his pet projects. PE Jackie who is as passionate about trees as yours truly is very very supportive of the project. Join us and be part of the “RCM Green Movement”. Planet Earth Needs You!

ROTARY CLUB OF MANILA CENTENNIAL CHO-RALE COMPETITION

Latest Update:

A Memorandum of Cooperation between the Rotary Club of Manila and the Department of Education has been drafted for review of the parties concerned.

Dear Fellow RCMers,

As you well know, our Centennial Year is upon us. In the past few years leading up to the present, your club leadership has planned and prepared several projects and events befitting this milestone in the history of our prestigious club. During the Town Hall Meeting last August 9, 2018, these activities were presented and broadly discussed. The responses of our members afterwards were inspir-ing. They want to do their share in making our centennial cel-ebrations truly memorable, not only for RCMers but also to all Rotarians of the Philippines and of Asia. Indeed, in various district functions recently, other Rotarians from all over the country have also expressed their enthusiasm in joining us in the celebration of 100 years of the Rotary movement in this part of the world. They are just waiting, in their own words, for the Rotary Club of Manila to lead them.

It is it time therefore, for us to take the challenge of leading our fellow Rotarians. And for us to do this effectively, the participa-tion of each RCM member is needed. Attached is the list of our centennial committees and their projects. Also provided is the Program of Activities for the Centennial Week. I urge you to vol-unteer your participation in any of the activities. Together, we can attain greater achievements for our club!

Please indicate the committee(s) / event(s) that you are joining.

Yours in Rotary,

Pres. Susing Pineda
