A strain of influenza virus, especially human in- fluenza type A or B, for use in formulating a vac- cine is selected by a process which comprises isolating candidate influenza viruses in em- bryonated hens’ eggs, determining whether they have antigenic similarities to strains which are the same except that they have been isolated and grown exclusively in animal cells, that is to say whether they are cell-like , and selecting at least one such cell-like strain or a reassortant thereof having its HA and NA genes for the vaccine.

An improved rectal mucus screening test method and kit for cancerous and precancerous conditions which is rapid, employs reagents which can be provided in kit form and which does not give false negatives due to sampling er- ror, immobilizes the mucus sample in a mem- brane filter, tests for marker carbohydrates which have vicinal galactose moieties and which are oxidized with galactose oxidase to vicinal al- dehydic moieties which are visualized with Schiffs reagent and oxidizes those samples which test negative for the marker carbohydrates with periodic acid, renders the sample visualizable with Schitl’s reagent, applies the galactose oxidase directly to the membrane fil- ter, thereby speeding up color developed and em- ploys the Schiffs Reagent which was refrigerated after preparation until the color faded to a straw shade before being treated with activated charcoal, which renders the solution storage stable ability for many months and en- hances its color development ability.
