The second part teaches the discovery of reverse loading of vesicles and liposomes to obtain fully functional core volume load of a useful burden without the trauma degradation of the active burden material, and with greatly extended shelf life.

A defined serumfree medical solution for appli- cations in Ophthalmology, that contains one or more cell nutrient supplements which maintains and enhances the preservation of eye tissues, in- cluding human corneal tissues at low temperatures (2 degrees C. to 15 degrees C.). This solution is composed of a defined aqueous nutrient and electrolyte solution, supplemented with a glycosaminoglycan(s), a deturgescent agent(s), an energy source(s), a buffer system(s), an antioxidant(s), membrane stabilizing compo- nents, antibiotic(s), ATP precursors and nutrient cell supplements.

Monoclonal antibodies capable of binding anti- genic determinants within regions of the core proteins of the Human Immunodeficiency Virus and immortalized celI lines producing those monoclonal antibodies are provided. The mono- clonal antibodies find use in a variety of ways, in- cluding HIV antigen detection in biological samples. Using these methods, individuals may be identified who are infected with HIV but ~ who have not yet developed anti-HIV antibodies. The methods also find use in monitoring in vitro growth of HIV, and the efficacy of therapeutic a- gents and vaccines.

Various specific human SP-18 and human SP-5 derived peptides have alveolar surfactant protein (ASP) activity. These peptides are prepared using synthetic methods or by recombinant tech- niques. The peptides of the invention include surfactant proteins having serine replacements for the cysteines.
