DefenCell – An introduction

DefenCell is a range of rapidly deployable, lightweight, compact, non-metallic,earth filled protective barrier systems.

DefenCell has been designed by engineers for Engineers and is a containmentsystem for earth, sand or other locally available fill materials.

DefenCell uses a proven construction system that has been extensively used inthe building, oil & gas, road and rail industries for many years.

DefenCell is modular in design, and construction can be tailored in height, widthand configuration to meet operational force protection requirements for barrierwalls or structures for protection against ballistic threats, blast mitigation andmoving vehicles.

DefenCell has a minimum serviceable field life in excess of 30 months. Thematerial has built-in UV resistance, is durable and easily painted or coated ifrequired. DefenCell installations in Afghanistan with the British Army have been insitu for 2 and a half years with no additional maintenance.

DefenCell structures are completely non-metallic, removing the risk of secondaryshrapnel and spall or compass and RF interference. It does not rust or rot inharsh or wet conditions. Fiberweb Typar geotextile materials, as used inDefenCell, have been installed for 25 years or more in roads and continue to beused in the housing, construction, transport and oil & gas industries.


DefenCell is completely manufactured from tough and durable, internationallyrenowned, Fiberweb Terram® or Typar® nonwoven geotextile with enhanced UVprotection. DefenCell is fabricated using a patented design, to create a range ofstrong, modular and versatile cellular products to suit many different applications.

DefenCell offers significant logistical advantages over sandbags and other barrierssystems. It is man portable, with a typical 5m long section, weighing less than10kgs and is easy to handle. Over 1,100m of 1.35m wide, 1.10m high wall can betransported in a single 20’ shipping container. It can be safely dropped from atruck or helicopter with no risk of damage.

DefenCell is a versatile and flexible, modular design, allowing different sizes to becombined for enhanced protection and specific tasks, however the cellular designgives it significant structural strength for building Forward Operating Bases (FOB)and Observation Posts (OP) as well as Bunkers and Firing Positions. DefenCell fillcan be compacted so it will support overhead protection systems. Perimeterbarriers for critical infrastructure can be easily and rapidly constructed, withspecific profiles to combat vehicle attack. The natural appearance of the materialallows the barrier to quickly blend to its surroundings.

DefenCell has been supplied to UK Ministry of Defence as well as US Forces in themainland US and Hawaii, the Irish DoD and other overseas governmentorganizations. It is in service in Afghanistan and provides protection toAmmunition Supply Points (ASP) at Camp Bastion and Kandahar.

DefenCell can be used to provide an effective barrier for traffic and to constructcheckpoints, chicanes and guard posts. The DefenCell vehicle barrier has beentested against K8 and K12 threats in both UK and USA. Again, the lightweightfeatures of Defencell and its rapid deployability make it ideal for stand-aloneoperations or to temporarily enhance existing security measures.

DefenCell has been ballistically tested against ammunition up to 25mm cannon,including APDS and tracer, as well as multi-shot and provides excellent protection.Extensive testing has also been carried out to evaluate performance against arange of IED’s and simulated weapons. DefenCell performs particularly well inblast mitigation tests as the cellular structure absorbs shock and minimizesshrapnel penetration.

DefenCell is a truly versatile product and is also suitable for a wide range ofengineering applications. Panels of DefenCell cellular material can be used forground stabilization, preparing roadways and for building hardstand areas forvehicle and aircraft movement. Barrier walls can be constructed to provide floodprotection, either to protect infrastructure or to raise existing levees temporarily inemergency.


General Description

Defencell is a geotextile, cellular containment system which, when filled withlocally available fill or material, can be used to build a wide variety of short- andlong-term force protection structures, ranging from small improvisedemplacements to longer-term protective walls and large storage areas.

Cell Sections. Cell sections are the basic building block and come in four widths,all the same length. Each section comprises a series of fabric cells, which are un-rolled, opened out and then filled. Sections can be placed on top of and alongsideeach other to produce the required structure. A small skirt at the top of eachsection stops fill from spilling out at the joints.

Four standard sizes of cell section are available. They are known as T2, T3 and T4plus the DT1. All the T series are the same length but they have different widthsto provide variable levels of protection and flexibility in building. They areconstructed of Circular cells. The DT1 has Triangular cells but is otherwisecompatible with the other cells. The basic construction of the four types and celllayout are shown below.

Deployment Of DefenCell

DefenCell is quick to deploy and easy to handle. The modular design and smallnumber of different models make it simple to assess the requirement and choosethe appropriate cell section.

Unpack the required number of DefenCell sections and assemble the matchingframe. Assess the ground area where the construction is proposed and, ifnecessary, level, provide foundations or install drainage etc.

3. Fill cells half full and compact


4. Continue Filling and Compacting

Stop When Inner Cells Are Almost Full and Tops of Inner Cells Are Just Visible
