THANK YOU to the volunteers that set up and sold ice cream this year at the Steam Show on

August 25-27, 2017.

Thanks to Mark, Kathy and Kristin Schreier, Marge Copeland, Mary Ann Ashbrenner, Gisela Ringle, Rod and Kristin Zietlow, Steve and Rachel Doran, Clarence Werner, Mike and Mollie Maurer, Vicki Maurer, and Pastor Gail.  Thanks to Denny Lang and his helpers who set up the stand.

After an exciting start with electrical issues we had a good sales day on Friday.   The weather didn't cooperate on Saturday and Sunday, so the final profit after expenses of the booth space and ice cream was about $1,200.00.  The proceeds will be split between the Circle of Joy and the Crop Walk.  A big thank you to all that stopped by and supported our stand with your ice cream purchase :)

Looking forward to doing it again next year!  Mark your calendars!

PASTOR’S PONDERINGS FOR OCTOBER, 2017

500 years is a pretty long time! That’s at least 25 generations, and in those 5 centuries a lot of changes have taken place. New “technology” during Martin Luther’s lifetime included the printing press, which had just been developed by Johannes Gutenberg. This allowed Luther’s writings (beginning with the 95 Theses), to be distributed to an audience that was just learning to read.

How much more has more recent technology changed lives! Many of our oldest members were born at a time when outhouses were common, when homes were without running water, and telephones—if they had them—were all “manned” by one operator, who had to connect each call individually, and each call could be listened to by everyone else on the “party line.”

Today “party line” means something very different. Our country is being torn apart by “party lines.” Ideas of what’s right vs. what’s wrong, what’s good vs. what’s bad (or worse, evil), what’s safe vs. what’s dangerous—these ways of thinking are in themselves, I believe, wrong and bad and dangerous.

As Christians we’re called to a way of thinking that’s opposed to national politics. Our allegiance, through our baptism into Christ, is to our triune God: Father (Creator), Son (Savior), and Holy Spirit (the one who leads and directs us as children of the heavenly Father).

The New Testament reading for October 1 is from Paul’s letter to the church in Philippi, written around 60 CE (common era) while Paul was in prison in Rome. The appointed verses include what’s known as the Christ Hymn, believed to be one of the oldest professions of faith in Christianity: Let the same mind be in you that was in Christ Jesus, who, though he was in the form of God, did not regard equality with God as something to be exploited, but emptied himself, taking the form of a servant, being born in human likeness. And being found in human form, he humbled himself and became obedient to the point of death—even death on a cross. Therefore God highly exalted him and gave him the name [Lord] that is above every name, so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father (Philippians 2:5-11).

WWJD? What would Jesus do? When anyone tells you you “have to” do or say or believe something in order to be a good citizen of this “one nation under God,” stop and think. In what way is that “have-to” consistent with what we pray for in the Lord’s Prayer: Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. May God have mercy on us all.

REFORMATION SUNDAY: October 29, 2017 -500 Years of Evangelical Reformation 1517-2017“Freed and Renewed in Christ” is the theme used by

the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America’s churchwide organization in its observance of the 500th anniversary of the Reformation that began with the 95 theses that Martin

Luther first made public on October 31, 1517.

In “The Freedom of a Christian” (1520) Martin Luther famously wrote “A Christian is lord of all, completely free of everything; a Christian is a servant, completely attentive to the needs of all.” The ELCA’s theme expresses this message of the Christian faith’s freedom and a renewed life of service to others in Jesus Christ.

When Martin Luther posted his “Ninety-five Theses” on the church door in Wittenberg in 1517, no one expected the breadth of evangelical reforms in Christian teaching and practice that followed. In every dimension of Christian faith a renewed trust in God’s forgiving mercy replaced a reliance on teachings and practices that, like the sale of indulgences, were vulnerable to abuse and corruption. Preaching a few years later, Luther said, “I opposed indulgences … but never with force. I simply taught, preached, and wrote God’s Word; otherwise I did nothing. I did nothing; the Word did everything.” When he began to propose reforms in worship, he wrote similar words. “This is the sum of the matter: let everything be done so that the Word may have free course.”

Nearly 500 years later, the results of this evangelical confidence in God’s forgiving and liberating Word are evident today in Christian communities of all types.

Join in with the group for some old-fashioned fun !!

All area seniors are welcome !!!

LADIES’ BIBLE STUDY continued on the 2nd Tuesday of each month at 1:00 PM – next date: Tuesday, October 10th.

This October will be Session 2 of the three-session Gather Bible study on the Apostles’ Creed and what we together say we believe. Gather is the magazine of Women of the ELCA.

(October) Session 2: I believe in Jesus Christ… In Scripture, Jesus is called the Messiah, the Son of God, a teacher, a healer, the pioneer of our faith, the rock of our salvation, Son of Man and other titles. In the Apostles’ Creed, Jesus’ life and ministry is briefly summed up. Jesus is described as God’s only Son and our Lord—one who was conceived by the Holy Spirit and born by the Virgin, who suffered under Pilate, who was crucified, died and was buried. The creed is a definition of the work of the Father, Son and Spirit, yet there is also fullness to being followers in the Way of Christ that is not described in the creed. How does the creed encompass faithful living in imitation of Christ? In other words, what does it mean to believe even more about Jesus and following Jesus than we say in the words of the creed?

CIRCLE OF JOY – along with a THANK YOU for continued donations, Darlene Berg representing the Edgar/Marathon Circle of Joy presented some useful information about the Circle –

following are a few bits and pieces:

The pantry opens to the public twice a month. The officers only meet once a month to pay bills/deposit checks, etc.

She believes the Circle was started in 1985. The Circle is a “food” pantry and helps approximately 25-30 families per month in the Edgar/Marathon area – food donated from food drives in schools, churches, clubs, or private persons. Fresh meat is purchased with the cash donations.

Custom Meats in Marathon donates over 500# of ground venison each year.

Makings for Thanksgiving, Christmas, and Easter meals are also purchased. Along with the Christmas meal, the “Giving Tree” is set up at ACB.

Some things always needed are: peanut butter, jelly, canned fruit, syrup, crackers, sugar, flour, juice, laundry soap, and dish soap.

Again, a THANK YOU is extended from the Circle of Joy for continued donations (both cash and food items in the cradle in the back).

A copy of Darlene’s letter is posted on the bulletin board in back for anyone interested in reading it in its entirety.

VOLUNTEERS are needed to provide many of the free services that help the homebound elderly neighbors to continue to live independently. Find out how you can help by contacting the United Way Retired and Senior Volunteer Program at 715-298-5721. Can you spare an hour now and then? With a little time, you can make a difference.

THE STORY OF JONAH (BY ST. STEPHEN YOUTH) -

THANKSGIVING FOR SPECIAL SERVICESPastor GailSt. Stephen was blessed in September with two special worship services. Our 125th anniversary celebration drew over 150 people! (One visitor told me it was so wonderful that our congregation was so large. . . .) The handbells rang, the people sang—we heard a lot of comments about the glorious singing; lifting voices in song is a long historical tradition of Lutherans! And of course, table fellowship is always an appropriate way to cap off our time of worship. God gifted us with beautiful weather, and those who were able to stay for the concert in the park enjoyed the music of “Faith, Hope, and Harmony,” a three-person Christian group who will be returning to provide a musical worship service early in 2018. Many thanks to all who shared this wonderful day with us!

The following week our Bishop, Rick Hoyme, delivered an engaging sermon on the gospel of forgiveness. Where there is forgiveness, there is the kingdom of heaven! Again we gathered for a feast after worship, this time a typical Lutheran potluck, with more delicious and delectable food than we could eat. No one does

potlucks like Lutherans! Our thanks to Bishop Rick for his leadership in the Synod, and his personal connection to each congregation.

October, too, will bring special worship times. On the 22nd six young people will celebrate the Affirmation of Baptism (which we call Confirmation). It’s been a joy and a delight for me to get to know them in our evening gatherings this past month. St. Stephen can be both proud of the attentiveness and enthusiasm of their youth, and also optimistic as to the future of our “church” (which is the people, the body of Christ, the fellowship of believers, the communion of saints).

Then, finally, after several years of anticipation, the entire Lutheran Church (all 246 branches of Lutheranism throughout the world!) will celebrate the 500th anniversary of the Reformation. Martin Luther, meaning only to purify the worship of the Roman Catholic Church, asked questions that made the whole world rethink what it means to be a follower of Jesus, the Christ (the Messiah long promised by God).

I hope you’ll join us for these special services, and for all others as well!
