The property was once part of the Fuller Farm, one of several large sheep farms located in western
Shaftsbury. These farms produced wool along with other farm products. As such, it is surrounded by old
stonewalls and old sheep fence. The wool was carted over the hill to the upper end of Shaftsbury Hollow
where there was a flax mill on the headwaters of White Creek.
Granger Hollow Road is a year-round, town-maintained road. A private access road travels through the
lower pastures up to the forest area.
The Forest
The main forest area is approximately 95 acres. The forest consists of large pole to small sawlog sized
mixed hardwoods along with patches of small to medium sawlog sized white pine and similarly sized
spruce plantations. In the hardwood mix are red oaks, aspen, shagbark and pignut hickories, and all great
sources of food for many species of wildlife. Scattered are very large oaks and hard maples that once
created shade for the pastured livestock. While this area has little immediate timber value, with time and
TLC, this forest could produce some very valuable red oak, hard and soft maple, ash, and hickory saw and
veneer logs. Trees harvested from the spruce plantations could be used to build a nice log camp / lean-to
far in the woods and or a main house.

Several trails provide great access for hiking, hunting, wildlife viewing and other outdoor activities. A
private access road travels through the lower pastures up to the forest area.
Approximately 10.5 acres of woods border White Creek and the fields.
Recently, hedgerows have been cleaned and thinned out; a very selective tree harvest in the main forest
area.
The Fields
Approximately 29 acres of the property are in mowed fields. The field closest to the road has a seasonal
wet area which would be a perfect spot for a pond. The fields could be used for raising agricultural crops,
pasture for animals, growing apple trees, berries, etc. .
The ideal location for a house would be in the upper field, which has spectacular views of the nearby
Chestnut Woods State Forest in White Creek, New York, Shaftsbury’s West Mountain, and southerly
views of fields, forests and mountains that may range into Massachusetts.
Wildlife
The southern boundary line runs along a portion of White Creek which Vermont’s Dept. of Fisheries and
Wildlife yearly stock with locally raised Brook Trout. While the pools are constantly changing with each
spring snowmelt, local fisherman say they never walk away with an empty creel.
There are many deer runs crossing the property as is evident by the number of tree stands seen on abutting
properties. The population in the area appears to be expanding. One local noted a herd of 30 in a nearby
field.
Also using the property are turkey, fox, coyote, many songbird and raptor species. A local woodsman,
who regularly uses the Shaftsbury Hollow area in training bear dogs, claims one summer he treed 8
different bear.
