We are delighted to have Alex Hirtzel as our Bee Garden Party artist this year. Alex was the first Artist in Residence at the Royal Parks London, collaborating with the Mall and National Galleries, and has created an exhibition across these venues: “A right royal buzz”! Alex’s work featuring bees and pollination is in Duck Island Cottage in St James’s Park.

Alex has most generously donated three original, framed paintings to be auctioned at the Garden Party. They re-interpret Dutch flower paintings from the Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge, mixing historical and scientific references. The prints preserve the vintage imagery familiar to the female Victorian botanical painter and require the viewer to interact with them using UV light to see secret messages. Some of the paint is visible only under UV light – emulating a bee’s view of the world.

Queen Mary’s Summer House

This revolving timber summer house was commissioned by Queen Mary, the last royal resident of Marlborough House. Solitary bees are nesting in the thatched roof of the summer house.

Bees for development Bees for Development began work 25 years ago, articulating the reasons why beekeeping is such a useful tool for achieving poverty alleviation while maintaining biodiversity. We focus on simple methods of sustainable beekeeping - best for bees and people. We have helped many thousands of remote and poor families to earn income to meet their basic needs.

We provide free information to beekeepers in poor countries. Bees for Development Journal and Training Resource Boxes are sent to beekeepers, schools and projects in 130 nations, sharing knowledge and advice, and our website includes an open-access Information Portal.

We are helping farmers worldwide to turn natural resources into sustainable livelihoods, while maintaining bees and the wider environment.

Here in the UK, Bees for Development is a proponent of natural beekeeping and works to encourage pollinator friendly habitats. We have lobbied the local County Council to reduce verge and hedge cutting, with the enactment of a local Pollinator Policy in 2014. We established the new organisation, Bee Friendly Monmouthshire - an idea now being taken up by neighbouring County Councils.

We recently published a Hedgerow Manifesto, calling for greater care of these increasingly important sources of habitat and food for bees
