Maybe you missed the critically acclaimed, record-breaking, highest-grossing production in Berkeley Rep’s 50-year history, or maybe you want to relive the thrill before the show hits Broadway. Whatever the reason, here is the chance for two couples to experience the electrifying Ain’t Too Proud—The Life and Times of The Temptations on opening night of its Canadian premiere at The Princess of Wales Theatre in Toronto on October 16, 2018.

Enjoy vip seating as you watch five young guys from the streets of Detroit rise to become the greatest R&B group of all time (Billboard Magazine 2017) with hits like “Ain’t Too Proud to Beg,” “My Girl,” and “Papa Was a Rolling Stone,” and signature dance moves that will forever burn bright in our cultural imagination.

You’ll get the inside scoop on the show and its future when you break bread with Ain’t Too Proud lead producer Tom Hulce. An Emmy and Tony Award-winning actor, Hulce appeared in many films throughout the 1980s and 1990s, although he is perhaps best known for playing the title role in the acclaimed 1984 film Amadeus. We first met Hulce as one of the lead producers of Green Day’s American Idiot, which premiered at Berkeley Rep in 2009, shortly after he won a 2007 Tony Award as a lead producer of Spring Awakening, one of eight the production received that year, including one for Best Musical.

You will enjoy three nights at Toronto’s landmark hotel, the Fairmont Royal York. Located downtown, the historic luxury hotel recently underwent a multi-million dollar renovation, marrying modernity with regal elegance. A cultural and culinary destination for the cognoscenti, Toronto has been featured in 2018 Best Places to Travel lists by Forbes, Travel & Leisure, and Architectural Digest, among other publications. With its abundant museums, restaurants, and theatres—Toronto boasts the third-largest English-speaking theatre district in the world—you’ll find plenty to keep you occupied during your stay.

Let your imagination run away with you—you, Toronto, and the Temptations of your dreams.

Steve and Jill Fugaro

To wish us santé as we celebrate our 50th, our favorite Alices have teamed up to offer your party of eight a one-of-a-kind evening of glorious, perfectly prepared, local, sustainably harvested, and organically raised food paired with quite possibly the most interesting conversation of your life!

Alice Walker’s several bestsellers and seven volumes of poetry have sold over 15 million copies and have been translated into more than two dozen languages, but she is perhaps best known for her novel The Color Purple. Published in 1982, the novel earned Walker the 1983 Pulitzer Prize and National Book Award. The 1985 Steven Spielberg-directed movie based on the novel garnered popular and critical acclaim, and a slew of Academy Award and Golden Globe nominations; and The Color Purple—The Musical, which closed recently after a successful run in San Francisco, won the 2016 Tony Award for Best Revival of a Musical. After years of prolific literary success, Berkeley-based Alice Walker continues to use her pen and voice to fight for social justice in a variety of forums.

Restaurateur, author, and food activist Alice Waters’ iconic Berkeley restaurant Chez Panisse started the California Cuisine revolution and is recognized worldwide for food featuring the freshest seasonal ingredients, thanks to its direct relationships with a network of farmers, ranchers, and dairies.

You’ll savor the evening forever when you join Alice Walker at Chez Panisse for an intellectual and gastronomical feast.

Berkeley Rep Trustee Felicia Woytak and her husband Steve Rasmussen welcome you, and up to five friends, for a wine-lover’s weekend at their historic Palisades Vineyard in Calistoga.

Palisades Vineyard is a little bit of heaven tucked into a narrow canyon at the foot of the magnificent Palisades cliffs in the Napa Valley just east of the town of Calistoga. Bisected by the occasionally torrential Horns Creek, Palisades Vineyard’s cobbly loam soil is perfectly suited for growing the great Rhône and Bordeaux varietals.

Hot summers, cool morning westerly breezes, extended sunlight, and abundant winter rainfall combine to bless the vineyard’s Petite Sirah and Petit Verdot grapes with exceptional concentration, character, and depth. All of their Petite Sirah vines date from 1968 and the early 1970s and are dry-farmed and head-trained in the “old-world” style characteristic of Napa Valley’s heritage vineyards.

Felicia and Steve will give you an up close and personal tour of their working vineyard and share with you their love of the grape. You can hike the miles of trails around the property or just relax poolside, steps away from your guesthouse. But the highlight of your weekend will be a spectacular, celebratory winemaker dinner on the property with rising star Graeme MacDonald of MacDonald Vineyards. Graeme will delight you with his many stories of being a fourth generation grower/vintner in the Napa Valley where his great-grandparents planted the first vines since Prohibition on their property in Oakville. For 50 years, these grapes were sold to Robert Mondavi and used in his Reserve and To-Kalon wines, all based on a handshake between gentlemen.

Don’t miss out on this spectacular weekend of great food, wine, and friends!

Six nights in Dublin, Ennis, Killarney, and Clontarf Castle

Explore prehistoric forts, navigate pristine lakes, and discover hidden gems on this six-night open road adventure to Dublin, Ennis, and Killarney.

Your journey begins in Dublin, home to attractions like Jameson Distillery, Trinity College, Dublin Castle, and St. Patrick’s Cathedral. You’ll stay overnight at the charming, Mont Clare Hotel. Following a full Irish breakfast, you will find out why Guinness is good for you with two vip tickets to Dublin’s most popular destination, the Guinness Storehouse, before heading to one of Ireland’s most characterful and picturesque towns, the lovely Ennis in Clare County.

You’ll spend your next two nights at Ennis’s Old Ground Hotel and enjoy a full day in Martin McDonagh country as you visit Inishmore, the largest of the three remote Aran Islands, with time to wander at your leisure and revel in a tour with stops at the prehistoric fort of Dún Aengus and the Seven Churches, one of the earliest pilgrim sites. Your next day takes you north past the stunning Cliffs of Moher and through the karst landscape of the Burren to the Aillwee Caves. You’ll continue to County Kerry’s Killarney (approximately two hours from Ennis) where you’ll stay two nights at the Randles Court Hotel. Your evening is open to wander around this vibrant little town, while a new day brings a new adventure.

Feel the magic of the Shire, as the local “jarvey” (driver) transports you through the spectacular glacial valley of the Gap of Dunloe on a “jaunting cart” (pony and carriage). A boat trip into the heart of Killarney National Park, a unesco biosphere reserve, brings this spectacular day to a fitting close.

Your journey ends where it began—in Dublin, birthplace of Oscar Wilde and Samuel Beckett. On your last night on the Emerald Isle, you’ll savor a three-course dinner and the comforts of the historic Clontarf Castle Hotel. Originally built in 1172 as part of an inner circle of defense sites protecting the city, the Castle was opened as a luxury hotel in 1998, and it now provides you with a fitting conclusion to your Ireland adventure.

The final show of Berkeley Rep’s 2018–19 season has just been announced, and it promises to be a fitting finale to Tony Taccone’s illustrious tenure as Berkeley Rep’s artistic director. Tony will reunite with actor, stand-up comedian, writer, producer, and star of stage and screen John Leguizamo for the world premiere of a new musical comedy written by Leguizamo, Kiss My Aztec! The two last worked together on Latin History for Morons. With irreverent humor and a mashup of musical genres from merengue to hip-hop, Kiss My Aztec! is an inclusive celebration of Latin culture that will insidiously educate while making audiences dance in their seats and gasp with laughter.
